about team sports particularly in badminton:

Learning Objectives
Through discussions and differentiated activities, the students should be able:

A. determine volleyball background, rules which includes officiating, and basic


skills that will focus on foot works and physical training for the lower body,
B. appreciate and understand the importance of knowing the rules, and skills
involved as an intention of indulging oneself to sports activities, and
C. practice and execute the basic skills in volleyball by doing the foot works and
physical training drills.

Lesson 1:
Volleyball – Volleyball as a Team Sport

VOLLEYBALL AS A TEAM SPORT

In 1895, Volleyball was invented by William Morgan, physical director of the Young
Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was first called as
Mintonette until it was noticed that the nature of playing the game is volleying the ball
over thus net thus where the name Volleyball came from.

Volleyball is a team sport which is composed of 6 players in each team and 12


players in a playing court. Each team tries to score points by grounding the ball on the
other team's court under organized rules. It is played outdoor and indoor between
teams, in which six members in each side aims to score 25 points in every set or to
advance 2 points if deuce happened. It is also the course of hitting a ball back and
forth across the net within the playing area not committing any violations under the
rules in volleyball. It is a sport that is governed by FIVB or what they called as
“Federation Internationale de Volleyball”.

HISTORY:

Timeline of Significant Volleyball Events


❖ In 1900, a special ball was designed for the sport.
❖ In 1910, The Physical Director of the
YMCA, Elwood S. Brown, first introduced volleyball to
the Philippines
❖ In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of
passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by
another player (the set and spike) were introduced.
❖ In 1920, three hits per side and back row attack rules
were instituted.
❖ In 1922, the first YMCA national championships were
held in Brooklyn, NY. Twenty-seven teams from 11 states
were represented.
❖ In 1934, national volleyball referees were approved and recognized.
❖ In 1947, the Federation Internationale De Volley-Ball (FIVB) was founded.

Volleyball – Facilities and Equipment

Let’s check out the facilities and equipment which are essential in the game. Now, be
ready to discover the following facilities and equipment needed in volleyball.

the playing surface.

Lesson 3:
Volleyball – The Players and Rotation

THE PLAYERS AND THEIR ROTATION

Basically, service occurred when the opposing team commit an unforced error and
the possession of the ball will be given to the next serving team. The players are required
to rotate one spot clockwise for the serve to switch. The purpose of this is to rotate all
players to the serving position.

Note: Volleyball is composed of 6 players in each team but we only have 5 roles
since, 2 players stand as an outside hitter.

PLAYERS ROLES
SETTER ❖ The setter is the main contributor to the offense.

or technical ball movement.


❖ Set the ball with the outside hitter and middle
hitter.

OUTSIDE HITTER ❖ The outside hitters are the main attackers of the
play.
❖ Possess the following skills like jumping high, quick
movement, and adapting to different situations.
❖ Needs to be prepared for hits from variety of
places.
OPPOSITE HITTER ❖ These players need to be in a perfect balance of
both offense and defense.
❖ Get a lot of opportunities in hitting the ball.
❖ Jumping ability is vital to this role.
❖ Get more in defensive responsibility.

MIDDLE BLOCKER ❖ The tallest player on the team.


❖ Their main role for the team is being the first line
of defense against the opposing team’s hits.
❖ Needs to be knowledgeable in reading the
opponents attacks.
❖ Have a quick response in raising his or her arms
above the net in a blocking attempt.
❖ Usually do quick points throughout the set.
LIBERO ❖ They can only play on the back row of the court.
❖ They are the ideal person to receive a hit from the
opposite team.
❖ There are set rules the libero needs to follow, such
as not attacking the ball at the net, playing a set
for an attacker from the front, and more.
❖ They wear a different colored jersey.

Lesson 4:
Volleyball – Rules and Hand Signals

Remember: The result of a violation is a point for the opponent.

• When serving, stepping on or across the service line as you make contact with
the serve.
• Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully
• Contacting the ball illegally (lifting, carrying, throwing)
• Touching the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. Exception: If
the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an
opposing player, no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play.

• When attacking a ball coming from the opponent’s court, contacting the ball
when reaching over the net is a violation if the ball hasn't yet broken the vertical
plane of the net.
• Crossing the court center line with any part of your body. Exception: if it's the
hand or foot, the entire hand or entire foot must cross for it to be a violation.
• Serving out of order.
• Back row player blocking (deflecting a ball coming from their opponent), when
at the moment of contact the back row player is near the net and has part of
his/her body above the top of the net (an illegal block).
• Back row player attacking a ball inside the front zone (the area inside the 10-foot
line), when at the moment of contact the ball is completely above the net (an
illegal attack).

Volleyball – Basic Drills

A. Volleyball footwork’s/Line drills

Forward and Backward line hops


1. Imagine a line in front of you and
cross the line by hopping forward
backward as fast as you can.
2. Perform 15 seconds of work and rest
for 10-15 seconds in between sets.
3. Repeat the cycle over again for two
to three sets.

Lateral line hops

1. Keep the feet together while doing hops


from left to right.
2. Perform this footwork as quick as possible
to improve your agility.
3. Perform three sets with a rest in between
sets for about 10 to 15 seconds.

1. Move forward and backward one foot at a


time.
2. Start with the right foot forward followed by the
left. Then right foot backward followed by the
left.
3. Do this footwork as fast as you can for 15
seconds.
4. Perform three sets with a rest in between for
about 10 to 15 seconds.

Side Step Shuffles

1. Perform lateral shuffles in between two


markers with a distance of four meters apart.
2. Start with an athletic stance in one side.
3. In ten seconds do as much lateral shuffles
between the two markers.
4. Perform four sets with a rest in between for
about 10 to 15 seconds.

Ladder Box Drill


1. Stand facing the agility ladder
2. Next, jump into the second box
3. then jump backward to the first box
4. then jump again forward to the third box
5. then back again to the second box
6. Keep jumping back and forth in a sideward direction
until you have gone the length of the entire ladder,
then turn back and repeat

Ladder High Knee Run


1. Start at the end of the ladder with your body facing
sideward.
2. Raise your right knee up to your waist and then place
it in the first box.
3. Lift your left knee up to your waist and then step into
the second box.
4. Continue this motion all the way down the ladder.

Cross over steps

1. Start off in one side with the athletic


stance.
2. With one full burst motion make a big
cross over step into the middle and plant
your position for a second before making
another cross over step to the other side.
3. Do as much cross over steps within ten
seconds with 15 seconds’ rest.
4. Perform four sets of crossover steps with
15 seconds rest in between sets.

Spike approach

1. The purpose of the first step is to pick up


speed and cover distance. The second
step. The last two steps are much quicker
and should place your feet at somewhat
of a 45-degree angle from the net.
2. The second step is also to build up
speed and cover distance. Depending on
where the ball is, you should adjust the
distance of this step.
3. Along with the third step, swing your arms behind you so that you can raise them
with the last step to gain momentum and extra inches.
4. The final step (the quick two steps) requires you to keep your feet shoulder width
apart for balance and preparation for your jump.

Dig passing pattern

1. Anticipate and move to the ball.


2. Get your forearms under the ball.
3. Lean into the ball as you make
contact.
4. Dig the ball at the midline of your
body if you can.
5. If you have to reach outside your
body, extend and angle your arms in the
direction of the target.

Lateral blockings

1. Be ready to defend.
2. Watch the play develop.
3. Move to intercept.
4. Time your jump.
5. Use your hands properly.
6. Control the seam.

B. Suggested Volleyball Strength and Conditioning Exercises

For the suggested drills, if you do not have your dumbbells you may use other tools with
enough wait to still execute or perform the drills.

1. Good mornings
This exercise, done with 2 dumbbells, is good for glute
strength, hamstrings and improving an athlete's vertical
jump.
Recommended Reps: 2 sets of 10 reps

2. Side-to-side twist with overhead press


Holding a plate with your hands at the 9 and 3
positions, this exercise builds the core
and also develops upper body strength.
Specific to volleyball, it helps the
shoulder stay healthy and aids in the
transfer of power from the core to the upper
body. Recommended Reps: 3 sets
of 20 reps (10 left, 10 right)

3. Single leg RDL to overhead press


This exercise, which works your hamstrings and
glutes, helps improve your balance and boosts

Recommended Reps: 2 sets of 10 reps

4. This is another exercise that uses a plate. It helps


strengthen your legs and makes your ankles more
stable so you're at less risk for injury. It also helps
train you for single-leg jumps.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 16 reps (8 left, 8
right)

5. Lateral lunge with a press


These lateral lunges using a plate are good for
developing quicker side to side moves and
strengthening the arms for a more stable digging
and passing platform.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 20 reps (10 left, 10
right)

6. Dumbbell snatch
The dumbbell snatch is great for training triple
extension (which is basically the mechanics of
jumping), power development and improving
explosiveness.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 8 reps

7. Dumbbell pullover
This exercise has similar benefits as the side-to-
side twist with overhead press: core and
upper body strength and transfer of strength
from the core to the upper body in rhythm. It
helps with all overhead volleyball movements,
including serving, blocking, setting and
attacking.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 12 reps

8. Dumbbell squat to press


This is a good general exercise that helps all
positions in volleyball. It builds lower-body
strength and also accounts for the upper-
body movements that are very important
to volleyball: setting, serving, attacking,
blocking and transferring power from the
lower body to the upper body in a fluid
motion.
Recommended Reps: 2 sets of 16-20 reps

9. Biceps with overhead press


This exercise is used for injury prevention in
shoulders. Basically, it helps attackers
develop muscles that act as secondary
movers during spiking.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 8 reps

10. Alternate single leg squat on chair


You could first start just by putting your heel into
the floor most of the emphasis is going to be on
that standing leg so putting all the work into the
foot that’s planted solidly.
Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 8 reps

11. Split squat on chair/bench with tip toe

Tuck those toes on there from here you’re


going to drop down between both legs as
low as you can go keeping the knee. So,
you’re going to drop down make sure you
are pushing through that left ankle

Recommended Reps: 3 sets of 8 reps

12. Swing, Throw and catch for spike approach


• Torso with shoulder, elbow and hand still back.
• Elbow and hand are full extension and your biceps is just barely infront of your ear for
spike contact, or tennis ball release
• Let your arm relax and follow through but remember not to crunch or shrink your body.

General instructions:
➢ Make sure that your body is in good condition, if ill, do the activity once recovered.
➢ For medical concerns, inform your PE teacher immediately for follow-up instructions.
➢ Wear proper attire: Loose t-shirt, jogging pants, rubber shoes. For religious concerns like
wearing pants, inform your PE teachers for follow-up instructions.
➢ For your safety. Do necessary warm-up exercises before proceeding to the activity,
and cool-down exercises after.
➢ Do the activities in a safe environment and within the vicinity of your house only
➢ Do the activities at your own phase.
➢ Don’t forget to do cooldown
➢ Provide and drink water when necessary. Only do this during interval of the activity
