1. (a) With the help of a neat diagram, describe the various components of stress
and strains.
(b) Derive the stress, strain relationship and strain displacement elevation. [4+6+6]

2. Derive the finite element equations from the one dimensional second order equation
by variational approach. [16]

3. Estimate the displacement vector, stresses and reactions for the truss structure as
shown below Figure3:

1. (a) Define Geometric Variance.


(b) What is meant by displacement function?

2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of finite element equations by


direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis [16]

3. Consider the truss element with the coordinates i(10,10) & q(50,40) If the displace-
ment vector is q=[15 10 21 43]T mm, then determine

(a) The trace vector F

(c) Stiffness matrix if E= 70 GPA and A= 200 mm2 . [6+4+6]

4. Consider a beam with uniform distributed load as shown in the figure4. Estimate
the deflection at the centre of the beam.

6. One side of the brick wall of width 5 m, height 4 m and thickness 0.5 m is exposed
to a temperature of - 250 C while the other surface is maintained at 320 C. If the
thermal conductivity is 0.75 W/m K and the heat transfer coefficient on the colder
side is 50 W/m2 K. Determine

(a) The temperature distribution in the wall and


(b) Heat loss from the wall. [16]

7. Discuss the methodology to solve the Eigen value problem for the estimation of
natural frequencies of a stepped bar? [16]

1. (a) Explain briefly a plane strain problem with suitable examples.


(b) Derive the material constitutive matrix for a plane stress problem. [8+8]

2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of finite element equations by


direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis [16]

3. Derive the element stiffness matrix for the plane truss element. [16]

4. A beam of length 2 m is fixed at both ends. Estimate the deflection at the center
of the beam where load is acting vertically downward of 10 kN. Divide the beam
into two elements. Compare the solution with theoretical calculations. Take E =
2 × 1011 N/m2 , A = 250 mm2 . [16]

5. On a four nodal quadrilateral plane stress element the nodes are (0, 0), (6, 2), (6,
6) and (1, 5). A concentrated load whose x and y components are 10 kN, 16 kN
respectively is applied at a point (4, 5). Find the equivqlent nodal forces and the
displacement of nodes. [16]

6. Explain the methodology for the treatment of all three boundary conditions in a
1-D heat transfer element? [16]

7. Derive the elemental jumped and consistant mass matrices for 1-D bar element and
1-D plane truss element? [16]

8. (a) How do you calculate the element stresses for 3-Dimensional body?
(b) Derive the element stiffness term and force term for four noded tetrahedral
elements. [8+8]
