‫اللوفر في باريس في عام‪ .1967 ‬تابع تدريبه األكاديمي في المدينة الدولية للفن ون‪Cite ‬‬
‫‪  Internationale des Arts‬في باريس‪ ،‬بموجب منحة زمالة من الحكومة التونسية‪.‬‬
‫يّعد نجا عضو ًا مح َكم ًا وضيف شرف في ع دد من التظ اهرات والمهرجان ات العالمي ة‪ ،‬عالوة على أن ه عض و‬
‫لجنة تحكيم جائزة اليونسكو للفنون‪.‬‬

NJA MAHDAOUI
Born in 1937, Tunisia. Nja Mahdaoui graduated from the Academia Santa Andrea in Rome
and the Ecole du Louvre in Paris in 1967. He pursued his academic training at the Cité
Internationale des Arts in Paris with a scholarship from the Tunisian government. Nja has
been a jury member and a guest of honour at many international events and biennales and he
is currently serving as a member of the International Jury for the Arts Prize of UNESCO. He
has also received a number of distinction and international awards.

Nja Mahdaoui is a visual artist, and explorer of signs. He has been portrayed as a
“choreographer of letters”. His work, inspired by Arab calligraphy, is remarkably innovative
as the aesthetic dimension of letters bring forth a sense of the poetic and highly rhythmic,
arresting us with its rich abstract compositions. Thus, the concept beyond the works reveals
how the ideas are conveyed creatively through the artist’s choice of materials and mediums.
He has illustrated legendary and sacred myths, tales and manuscripts. For instance, he has
illustrated stories from the collection of tales “One Thousand and One Nights” which have
been the subject of an outstanding French edition, thus reminding us how the influence of
Arab literature and culture in our world is immense.

Nja has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide including exhibitions at the Institut
du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Hermitage Museum in St-Petersburg, the National Museum of
Scotland and the Modern Art Museum in Baghdad, only to mention a few. In addition, he has
taken part in performing art projects, in which he introduces his work through performance art
within the framework of theatre and dance. He has designed monumental art works for the
International Airports of Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and also for the Gulf Air
aircrafts. Besides these, his works are presented in international art fairs in Basel, Paris, Abu
Dhabi, and Dubai. His work has been widely shown around the world, and can be found in
many private and public collections such as the British Museum in London and the
Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. Nja Mahdaoui is considered a notable Arab
contemporary artist. 
He lives and works in Tunisia.
