4 WHEREAS, the Student Government Association of the University of North Carolina

5 Wilmington strives to represent the voice and vision of the entire student body; and

7 WHEREAS, every year, over 37,000 Americans are killed in acts of gun violence and 84,000
8 more are shot and wounded;

10 WHEREAS, a gun violence survivor is anyone who has personally experienced gun violence —
11 whether they have witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened or wounded with a gun, or
12 had someone they know and cared for wounded or killed;

14 WHEREAS, forms of gun violence can include, but are not limited to: gun suicides, gun
15 homicides, domestic violence involving a gun, shootings by law enforcement, and unintentional
16 shootings;

18 WHEREAS, 58 percent of American adults, including 68 percent of Black and LatinX
19 Americans, or someone they care for has experienced gun violence in their lifetime,
20 demonstrating the reach and impact gun violence has in communities across America;
21
22 WHEREAS, firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens;
23
24 WHEREAS, Americans in communities across the nation are working to end the senseless
25 violence by advocating for common-sense gun safety legislation;

27 WHEREAS, by commemorating National Gun Violence Survivors Week from February 1 to
28 February 7, 2021, communities across America will raise awareness about gun violence and
29 honor the lives lost by gun violence; and

31 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Student Government Association of the University

32 of North Carolina at Wilmington declares February 1 to February 7, 2021 to be National Gun
33 Violence Survivors Week. The Student Government Association encourages all students to
34 support their communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and
35 value human lives.
