1. What are the four dimensions of sustainable development? Define each of them with a
couple of sentences.
Life on land: I think this include all the others goals and more: “Protect, restore and
promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat
desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.”
We need a new mentality and new ways of living for all the people (as we live in “era of
consumption”).
3. Make a list of different natural resources (from 5 to 10). Which of the resources from
your list are running out? What is the difference between renewable and unrenewable
natural resources?
- Air
- Sun
- Water
- Soil
- Forests
- Natural gas
- Minerals
Renewable resurse are the resources that form by themselves in shorter or longer period
of time (e.g. Sun, forests, soil); unrenewable resources are the resources which cannot be
easily replaced once they are destroyed(e.g. natural gas, minerals)
The tasks were made by Ville Hamunen and Niina Rossi based on the materials made by TerhiKokkonen. Tasks
were finally modified by M. Hurri.
Promotion of sustainable development (1 cp)
4. Biological diversity. What does this mean and why is it important? Choose one
endangered species and list reasons why it is endangered.
Different species of plant, animals, fungi and micro-organisms each have an important
role in the natural ecosystems that provide all the living on the planet.
All the species have a very important role in human and planet life but t he disappearance
of bees must be prevented: their role being visible in a very short period (no more
pollination of plants - devastating consequences for humans and nature)
5. Shortly define the concept ofsociety’s commitment. What different objectives are included
in making the commitments?
Society’s commitment: mutual agreement for creat a better life for now and future.
Objectives:
Equal prospects for well-being
A participatory society for citizens
Sustainable employment
Sustainable society and local communities
A carbon-neutral society
A resource-wise economy
Lifestyles respectful of the carrying capacity of nature
Decision-making respectful of nature
6. You can challenge a company, your friend or even yourself to make a commitment for
sustainable development. What would be your challenge for the companies in your field
of study or for any other stakeholder?
The tasks were made by Ville Hamunen and Niina Rossi based on the materials made by TerhiKokkonen. Tasks
were finally modified by M. Hurri.
