1. INTRODUCTION

Background

Santi School Project (SSP) works in the

field of education in Nepal, an
impoverished country in South Asia
nestled in the Himalaya between India
and China. The beneficiaries of this
project are mainly the children from
disadvantaged and marginalized
communities of Nepal. It has been
supporting construction and renovation
of public school buildings and providing
Early Childhood Development training to
the teachers of the government schools in
Nepal.

SSP built a primary school named “Shanti Primary School” in 2008 where students from a
poor mountainous village named Ramche are getting completely free and quality education
from well-trained teachers. Since the inception of the project, SSP has fully funded the
operations of the school.

The Shanti Primary School has completed its second academic session in May 2010. This
study evaluates the progress made by the school within the year.

SSP’s Project Coordinator visited the project site between 17th May to 22nd May for the
study.

2. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Almost 85 students are enrolled in Shanti Primary

School from different places of Ramche VDC.
Students in Shanti Primary School are mainly
from Tamang, Brahmin and Chhetri, Dalit and
some are from Thami community. The number of
students up to the third grade is substantially
higher than other nearby schools. The chart
below shows the comparison between other
nearby schools.

Chart 1. Number of students up to class 3 in Shanti and its neighboring schools (2009/2010)

From the above chart, we can see that Shanti Primary School has highest number of
students in comparison with the neighboring schools. Parents of the students believe that
Shanti Primary School provides a better quality education due to better trained teachers
and superior classroom facilities.

Students in Shanti Primary School come from different places of Ramche VDC. Some
students come from far away villages like Bhatte, Maibale and Pyare, which are more than
45 minutes walking distance from the school. Even though there are other primary schools
near these villages, the parents prefer sending their children to Shanti Primary School.

The figure below shows the locations of the villages where the students come from to
Shanti Primary School:

Regular Assessment Result
Nepal’s government introduced new assessment system for the primary level instead of
terminal examination from last year. The assessment is based on student’s overall
performance such as reading, writing, speaking, regularity in school etc. On the basis of this
regular assessment, final result is prepared which is categorized into five different grade: A+
(90%-100%), A (80%-89%), B (70%-79%), C (50%-69%) and D (Below 50%).

Class Two
21 students were enrolled in Class 2 during
the academic year 2009-2010. All the
students passed the class and will graduate
to Class 3 next year. 19 percent of the
students passed with A+ Grade. The chart to
the right shows the grades distribution of
students in Class 2.

Attendance Rate of Students in Shanti Primary School

Regular attendance is a critical part of a student’s performance. By providing quality
education, Shanti Primary School attempts to provide an environment that encourages the
students to attend school regularly. The chart below shows the attendance rates of students
at the school. As you will notice, the attendance rates improved as the year progressed. This
is a very positive sign for the school.
Chart 4. Students’ Attendance Rate

Teachers believe the training they received has helped them make the classes more
interesting for the children. They have incorporated games into the curriculum to make
education fun. If it were not for illness and the distance students have to walk to come to
the school, we could achieve 100% attendance.

Reading, Writing and Speaking Skills

Shanti Primary School is teaching in English
medium from this year. In English medium, all
the subjects are teach in English medium except
Nepali. According to the schoolteachers and
parents, their students are improving reading,
writing and speaking skills.

The student’s command of Nepali has also

improved compared to last year. Even though
Tamang is the mother tongue, students are
learning to speak Nepal fairly well. This will
help the students tremendously when they go Children practice reading in the classroom

to the nearby government school for the

secondary level classes.

Apart from this, improvement in English

language is a great achievements for the school.
Even though many government school only
begin teaching English from Class 4, our school
begins teaching the language from the nursery
level. We believe this fact alone will lead to the
children having a better command of the
The school’s headmistress teaching language.

Extra Curricular Activities in School
Students are also involved in different
extracurricular activities in School. They play
different games with each other. Dance
classes have also been incorporated into the
curriculum. Nowadays, they are also
involving in different programs like school
cleaning campaign and village cleaning
campaign etc.

Volunteers Add More Value

Volunteers arriving at Shanti Primary School
also add an additional value not available at
other nearby schools. Sarah, a volunteer
from Austria, stayed at the school for 4
months. During this time, she organized
events such as Apple Day, Orange Day,
Toothbrush Day, Sports Day, Picnics, etc. to
create awareness among the students.

The Apple Day was a unique event that

Sarah organized after she learned that many
students in the school had never eaten an
apple even though it was the first word that Sarah, a volunteer from Austria, reads to
many of the students learned in English. students at the school

In the year 2009, 3 volunteers worked in Shanti Primary School. They were Joe from US,
Mohmmed from Saudi Arabia and Sarah from Austria.

School Management Committee

All the members of the SMC received two
days training from the Government
Resource Person (Mr. Padam Basnet). The
training was mainly focused on duties,
responsibilities and rights of SMC. The
training should improve the management
of the school.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS

On the basis of above result, following recommendations are recommended here.

The quality of education should be maintained at a high level at Shanti Primary

School. The reason for the school’s success is that the parents believe the school is
better than other nearby schools.
Appropriate Early Childhood Development teachers training should be provided to
the new teachers.
Teacher’s salaries should be reviewed on timely basis and increased if necessary to
create additional incentives for the teachers.
School Management Committee members should be more active and responsible for
the betterment of the school.
