Our mission and OBJECTIVES

G. D. Birla Memorial School for Boys has been founded by Mr. B.K. Birla and Dr. (Mrs.) Sarala Birla to immortalise the ideals of
Late Ghanashyam Dasji Birla, a doyen of Indian industry.
Founded on July 8, 1987 G.D. Birla Memorial School for Boys was formally inaugurated on August 15, 1987. Affiliated to the
Central Board of Secondary Education, the school, comprising classes IV to XII, is a member of the prestigious Indian Public
Schools' Conference and The Round Square International.
Campus tours are offered to prospective students and parents who wish to view the campus and its facilities. The tour lasts for
about two hours followed by an interactive session between students, parents and teachers of the school.

Aim
Academic study is important and our students are expected to achieve high standards. Our view of education celebrates the
creative, physical, spiritual as well as the intellectual.
Our boys are encouraged to be confident with well-developed characters and independent minds. A sense of self-worth is
instilled in each of our students that enable them to stand up for himself - a purpose greater than himself, and in doing so, be of
value to the society.

L ocation
The seat of LEARNING

Ranikhet, a cantonment town is situated in the Almora district, the picturesque northern state of Uttarakhand. It is at a height of
5500 ft. above sea-level, about 360 km from Delhi. The school is located on a gentle hill slope 5 km from Ranikhet. The nearest
railway station is Kathgodam, 85 km from Ranikhet. Taxis and buses are easily available from the station and it takes around three
hours to reach Ranikhet.
The pollution-free environs of Ranikhet with a magnificent view of the snow-capped Himalayas, provide an environment
conducive to academic pursuit as well as the physical well- being of students.

The Campus
The 20-acre campus has modern, compact buildings which house the main academic block comprising computer-equipped
classrooms, laboratories, a well-stocked library and the office complex. The Principal's residence, staff-quarters, 12 boarding
houses, dining hall, a bakery, a gym, an infirmary and an auditorium find pride of place in the campus besides games fields and
playgrounds.

C lasses & Curriculum


Learning ACTIVITIES

Affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, G.D. Birla Memorial School offers its students a curriculum that helps them
realise their future areas of specialisation. The medium of instruction is English. The senior secondary students have the option of
selecting Science or Commerce.
A system of continuous assessment is followed, where a student's academic result is determined by his performance in unit
tests, periodic tests, half yearly and final examinations. Detailed subject reports, Housemaster's reports and Medical reports are
sent to parents to apprise them about the overall progress of their wards.
Subjects taught in the curriculum:
Compulsory language: English , Second language: Hindi (for classes IV to X) and Hindi / Sanskrit (for classes IX and X) , Third
language: Lower Hindi / Sanskrit (for classes V to VIII), Mathematics, History, Civics, Geography, Economics, Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, Computer Science, Physical Health Education, Life Skill Education, Environmental Science.
Senior Secondary level:
Senior Secondary students (classes XI & XII) are required to study English as compulsory language and any 5 (five) elective
subjects from the following:

* Students opting for Informatics Practices are not permitted to opt for Computer Science and vice versa

C o-curricular Activities
Body & SOUL

Dramatics
Dramatics, being an essential tool for personality development, is given a lot of importance in our school. Workshops are
conducted by experts that enable our students to hone their theatrical skills.

Art & Music


Art and Music are very popular among our students. There are two music departments - Instrumental and Vocal. The School
Orchestra has earned acclaim amongst the I.P.S.C. schools.

Hobbies, Societies & Publications


Students are encouraged to pursue a number of hobbies such as Debating, Dramatics, Instrumental Music, Photography,
Reading, Computers, Vocal Music, Art and Craft, Quizzing, Environmental Care, Philately and Dance.
They are also motivated to join a number of societies such as Geographical Society, English Literary Society, Mathematical
Society, History Society, Biology Society, Physics Society, Chemistry Society, Computer Society and General Knowledge
Society.
The school publishes a newsletter and an English Language journal edited by the Head of the English Department. Students are
actively involved in the publication of the newsletter and the annual school magazine.

Ready...Steady...GO!

Sports
The school boasts of a Cricket pitch, a playground, Pool room, five Volleyball courts, two Badminton courts, Squash and Tennis
courts. A qualified basketball coach trains students in various techniques.
Hockey, Football and Cricket are played as seasonal games. The gymnasium is equipped with a multi-trainer, and is used as a
skating rink when required. Students are trained in equestrian skills. All boarding houses have indoor game facilities like Chess,
Carrom and Table Tennis.
Mountaineering and rock-climbing courses at Nainital are organised by Altitudes - a recognised mountaineering institute. Our
boys are also taken out for House picnics, treks, educational and entertainment tours.

Learning by DOING

The Computer Laboratory


The school has two expansive computer laboratories along with a lecture room and a multimedia lab with 16 multimedia
systems. The school runs a Computer Literacy Programme for its students. The syllabus is upgraded every year keeping in mind
the latest developments in software.

The English Laboratory


English enhancement classes are conducted by qualified teachers in the English Laboratory equipped with TV, DVD, overhead
projector, lingua-phone, CDs, DVDs, cassettes and tape recorder. Audio-visual aids are used for teaching accent, pronunciation,
vocabulary and other language skills.

Science Laboratories
Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories are extensively used to enhance the learners' practical knowledge.

The Library
The library is the resource centre of the school with a worldwide collection of books catering to varied tastes and age groups. A
number of newspapers, journals, periodicals, CDs and DVDs provide the right blend of education and entertainment.

Auditorium
A state-of-the-art auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000 persons plays host to a plethora of cultural and theatrical events.

The Boarding House


The school boasts of 12 impressive boarding houses. The boys are divided into six houses - Himalaya, Nilgiri, Sahyadri, Aravali,
Vindhya and Himadri. Boys of classes IV to VIII reside in the Junior Houses while the Senior Houses quarter students of classes IX
to XII. House-parents, matrons, houseboys and staff members are dedicated for each boarding house. The senior houses have
separate study areas, which enable students to study beyond formal study hours.

Care and CONCERN

Diet
Meticulously planned, nutritious and varied vegetarian meals are served in our school. We also take care of special dietary
requirements of our students. The school boasts of an in-house bakery.

Medical Facilities
The school has a 16-bed hospital with a registered pharmacist and a visiting doctor. The hospital is equipped with oxygen
cylinder, instruments for minor surgical procedures, emergency and general medicines. The infirmary facilitates routine medical
check-ups. We have tie-ups with local hospitals and nursing homes for advanced medical assistance.
Health records of students are maintained and parents are requested to keep the school authorities informed of specific
medical requirements. On campus counsellor looks after the emotional and psychological well-being of our students.

Registration
A registration form is enclosed in the prospectus. In the interest of the students, the school limits the number of pupils it enrolls.
Registration for admission opens in October. Filling a registration form does not guarantee admission, nor is the registration fee
refundable.
Applicants are required to appear for an admission test, the date and venue of which will be given while depositing the
application form. Selected candidates must produce the transfer certificate from the school last attended at the time of
admission. Admission to class XI is provisional till the declaration of the Board results.

Admission Rules
1. Admission is granted purely on academic grounds irrespective of caste, creed and community.
2. Every candidate must be registered with the school before taking the admission test.
3. The registration fee is Rs.5000/- which is non-refundable. Registration does not guarantee admission. On being offered a
vacancy, the parent/guardian of the student is required to bring him to the school for an interview and written test on the
basis of which admission is offered.
4. At the time of admission, the student must produce a Transfer Certificate (T.C.) and a mark sheet from the school last
attended. Students coming from outside Uttarakhand will have to get their T.C. countersigned by the Inspector of
the School/District Education Officer.
In exceptional cases, depending on the merit of the child, a mid-term admission may be effected in case there is a
casual vacancy in a particular class.

Withdrawal
A student may be withdrawn from the school at the end of the academic year. Parents who wish to withdraw their wards at the
end of the academic year should notify in writing, two months in advance, failing which two months notice fees will be levied.
Administrative fee, admission fee, endowment fee and school fee once paid will not be refundable. However, advance paid
for personal expenses and clothing will be adjusted against the actual expenses incurred.
In case of expulsion from the school, there will be no remission of fee. A student may be expelled from the school on the
following grounds:
1. Misconduct and moral turpitude
2. Non-payment of school bills
3. Breaking school rules and regulations
4. Failing twice in the same class

Membership & Certification


The school has the honour of being a member of the Indian Public Schools' Conference. The school is also a member of the
Round Square International, a worldwide association of schools which share a commitment to personality development and
responsibility through service, challenge, adventure and international understanding.

Academic Year & Daily Routine


The academic year at G. D. Birla Memorial School consists of two terms:
March to June with a three-week summer break in June
July to December with a two-week Diwali break in October
Winter vacation begins in the third week of December. Students of classes X and XII return in January for a Winter Study Camp,
where they are intensively coached for the CBSE Examinations. Senior secondary students have the option of selecting either
Science or Commerce.
The daily routine of the school includes morning P.T., assembly, periods of lessons, games, hobbies and self-study hours.

R ules and Regulations


The MANDATES

1. No leave is granted during term time, except under very urgent circumstances.
2. Unauthorised absence from the school is considered a serious misconduct.
3. All things belonging to the student should be clearly marked. Every student is expected to take care of his belongings.
4. Parents/guardians are not allowed to give money to the students. Money may be deposited in the child's personal
account with the school office.
5. Parents/guardians must not allow their wards to bring any valuable articles such as mobile phones, expensive watches,
cameras etc. to the school.
6. Food parcels from parents are not permitted.
7. Parents/guardians should inform the school if a student had contracted any infectious disease during the holidays and if
he had received any prophylactic or proactive treatment. Doctor's prescription and list of medicines (if any) are to be
sent to the school along with a medical certificate.
8. Minor ailments will be treated in the school infirmary. Ailments needing doctor’s supervision shall be referred to the
hospital as per doctor’s advice and parents will be intimated.
9. The school does not accept any responsibility, legal or otherwise, for accidents. It will, however, take all necessary steps
to prevent such incidents.
10. In all matters pertaining to the studies, behaviour and welfare of the students, the Principal's decision is final and binding.
