Vocabulary Definitions

Ghetto - (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were
required to live.

Rations - a fixed allowance of provisions or food, esp. for soldiers or sailors or for civilians
during a shortage.

Swastika - the official emblem of the Nazi party and the Third Reich.

Barracks - a building or group of buildings for lodging soldiers, esp. in garrison.

Epidemic - a disease affecting many persons at the same time, and spreading from person to
person in a locality where the disease is not permanently prevalent.

Seize - to take possession of by force or at will: to seize enemy ships.

Latrine - a toilet or something used as a toilet, as a trench in the earth in a camp.

Raid - a sudden assault or attack, as upon something to be seized or suppressed.

Infirmary - a place for the care of the infirm, sick, or injured; hospital or facility serving as a
hospital: a school infirmary.

Resigned - submissive or acquiescent.

Stifling - suffocating; oppressively close.

Boils - a painful, circumscribed inflammation of the skin or a hair follicle, having a dead,
suppurating inner core: usually caused by a staphylococcal infection.

Partisans - an adherent or supporter of a person, group, party, or cause, esp. a person who shows
a biased, emotional allegiance.

Sabotaged - any underhand interference with production, work, etc., in a plant, factory, etc., as by
enemy agents during wartime or by employees during a trade dispute.

Tuberculosis – this disease when affecting the lungs; pulmonary phthisis; consumption.

Nettles - any plant of the genus Urtica, covered with stinging hairs.

Rummage - to search thoroughly or actively through (a place, receptacle, etc.), esp. by moving
around, turning over, or looking through contents.

Chronic - continuing a long time or recurring frequently: a chronic state of civil war.

Yom Kipper - a Jewish high holy day observed on the 10th day of the month of Tishri by abstinence
from food and drink and by the daylong recitation of prayers of repentance in the
synagogue.

Torah – the entire body of Jewish religious literature, law, and teaching as contained chiefly
in the Old Testament and the Talmud.

Reminisced - to recall past experiences, events, etc.

Trudge - to walk, esp. laboriously or wearily.

Lethargy - the quality or state of being drowsy and dull, listless and unenergetic, or indifferent
and lazy; apathetic or sluggish inactivity.

Anguished - feeling, showing, or accompanied by anguish.

Emaciated - to make abnormally lean or thin by a gradual wasting away of flesh.

Liberate - to set free, as from imprisonment or bondage.

Succumbed - to yield to disease, wounds, old age, etc.; die.

Typhus - an acute, infectious disease caused by several species of Rickettsia, transmitted by


lice and fleas, and characterized by acute prostration, headache, and a peculiar
eruption of reddish spots on the body.

Dysentery - an infectious disease marked by inflammation and ulceration of the lower part of the
bowels, with diarrhea that becomes mucous and hemorrhagic.

Convulsed - to cause to suffer violent, spasmodic contractions of the muscles.

Reign - the period during which a sovereign occupies the throne.

Extermination - to get rid of by destroying; destroy totally.

Oppressive - burdensome, unjustly harsh, or tyrannical: an oppressive king; oppressive laws.
