1. (a) Compare and contrast the molecular and convective mechanisms for momen-
tum transport.
(b) Estimate the viscosity of saturated liquid water at 100o C.

Data: At 100o C , V = 18.80 cm3 /gm − mole [8+8]

2. Predict the thermal conductivity of the following gas mixture at 1atm and 293K
from the given data on the pure components at the same pressure and temperature.
[16]

Species α Mole fraction xα Mα µα × 107 (g/cm.s) Kα × 107 (cal/cm.s.k)

CO2 1 0.133 44.01 1462 383
O2 2 0.039 32.0 2031 612
N2 3 0.828 28.016 1754 627

3. (a) Discuss the dependence of mass diffusivity on temperature and pressure.

(b) Show that for a binary mixture jA∗ +jB∗ =ρ(v − v∗ )..
(c) Show that for a binary mixture jA + jB = 0.
[8+8]

4. Derive the equations for velocity distribution and mass rate of flow through annular
region for an annular flow with inner cylinder moving axially. [16]

5. Calculate the heat loss from a rectangular fin for the following conditions: Air
temperature- 350 0 F
Wall temperature - 500 0 F
Thermal conductivity of the fin - 60 Btu/hr ft 0 F
Heat transfer coefficient - 120 Btu/hr ft2 0 F
Length of the fin - 0.2 ft
Width of the fin - 1ft
Thickness of the fin - 0.16 in.
The working relation may be obtained using shell balance method. [16]

6. A droplet of substance A is suspended in a stream of gas B. The droplet radius is r1 .

It is postulated that there is spherical stagnant film of radius r2 . The concentration
of A in the gas phase is XA1 at r=r1 and XA2 at r=r2 :

(a) By shell balance, show that for steady state diffusion r2 NAr is constant and
set the constant equal to r21 NAr1 , the value at the droplet surface.

7. Derive an expression for momentum flux and velocity distribution of Bingham plas-
tic flow on an inclined plane making an angle θ with the horizontal. [16]

8. A viscous fluid is an laminar flow in a slit formed by two parallel walls at a distance
2B apart. The steady state velocity profile for this case is
