Activity: Team 4 Square

Grade Level: 3-6

Standard: Strand 2: Recognize open space and how using it will gain advantage.

Skills: Throwing, Tossing, Volleyball Bump, Volleyball Set, Volleyball Spike, Soccer Pass, Offensive,
Defensive

Equipment: 20-30 dome cones, 3-5 dodgeballs

Description:
 Use the dome cones to split the gym into quadrants (four sections, like a four square grid).
 Divide students into 5 teams
 Assign each team to one of the courts: King, Queen, Joker, Newbie. The last team will wait on
the stairs.
 King Court starts will all three dodgeballs.
 On your signal, the king square throws (or uses assigned skill) the dodgeballs to another square.
 When all 3 dodgeballs (or 3 of the 4) are on the same court the round is over and the teams rotate
when required (same as a four square rotation).
 The team that had all 3 dodgeballs on their court goes to the side lines. Everyone else must rotate
in ascending rank order: stairs to newbie, newbie to joker, joker to queen, and queen to king.
 If the team on the newbie court gets out then they switch places with the team on the stairs and
the other teams don’t rotate. If the team on the king court gets out then the team will go to the
sidelines and the other teams rotate in ascending rank order: queen to king, knight to queen,
peasant to knight, and sideline to peasant.
 Teams only rotate if a team of a higher rank than them gets out.
 Three dodgeballs on the court means that all three volleyballs are either touching the court or in
the hands of one of the players on the court (if the player is preparing to get rid of the ball using
whatever skill instructed). However, if the last ball is in the air and has not touched the court yet,
then the players on the court can still get the ball to a different court (using the desired skill). If
the players are successful at hitting the ball to a different court then the round continues. If the
players are not successful and the last ball touches their court then the round is over and the team
on that court must go to the stairs and everyone else rotates as mentioned.
 Teams cannot get out on the serve, it is the next team after that to have 3 dodgeballs in their
square or on their court.
 Rounds can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute. Students should know how to rotate
quickly and quietly to maximize playing time.

Modifications:
 Skills you can work on with this game: overhand throwing, underhand tossing, volleyball bump,
set, spike, or soccer passing to keep the dodgeballs on the ground.
 If any teammate kicks a dodgeball when working on a skill that does not require a soccer pass
that team will automatically be out.
