Instructions: Describe the rules of the game volleyball game based on how you understand it and discuss
the scoring system of volleyball using your own words.
Answers:

1. Regardless of whether you’re an athlete, a coach, a relative, a fan, or just a leisure player, it's
a good thing to be familiar with the basic rules of volleyball. So it’s a pleasure to be enrolled
in this class because I have been more knowledgeable about the rules being imposed in the
game “Volleyball.”
I’ve understood the rules this way; matches are played best of five sets. The first four
sets are played at 25 points, with the last set being played at 15 points. The team must take a
set of two points. There is no limit but the set continues until one of the teams wins a two-
point advantage. Formerly both sets were 15 points with the first four sets having a 17-point
ceiling with the final set needing at least a two-point win advantage. There are 6 players on a
team, three on the back row and three on the front row or the attack line. Then, maximum of
three hits per side is allowed without any player hitting the ball twice in succession but it
must be noted that a block isn’t considered as a hit. The ball here may be played off the net
on a serve or even during a volley, whereas if it hits the boundary line, it is called “in” and is
“out” once it hits the floor completely outside the court, any of the cables or net outside of
the antennae, an antennae, the ceiling that’s above a non-playable area, and a referee stand or
pole. They say that it is illegal to catch, throw or hold the ball but it is legal for the ball to be
in contact with any body part of a player. Also, after a service, players in the front line may
switch positions at the net. It is also emphasized that a player can’t block or attack a serve
from on or inside the 10 foot line. There are officiating crew functioning in higher
competitions and this may include line judges, scorer, two refs and an assistant scorer.
There are also rules applying to violations which result to a point for the opposing
team such as when Stepping on or across the service line during service, touching the net
with any part of the body while the ball is in play except when the ball is being driven into
the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opponent, there will be no foul here
and the ball shall continue to be in play. Failure to serve the ball over the net or contacting
the ball illegally by carrying, lifting or throwing also gives a point to the other team. When
attacking a ball from the other team’s court, contacting the ball when reaching the net is
considered a violation if the ball hasn’t broken the net’s vertical plane yet. The team may also
be charged of violating the rules when they serve out of order or when they cross the court
centerline with any body part except if it is the foot or hand—the entire foot or hand must
cross the line first before it is considered a violation. When blocking a ball from the court of
the opponent, contacting it when reaching over the net is another form of violation if they
haven’t used their three contacts yet and that they have a player in that position to make a
play on the ball. Finally, the team won’t get the point if the back row player attacks the ball
inside the front zone (illegal attack) when at that moment of contact, the ball is entirely above
the net and when the back row player blocks the ball (illegal block) when it is near the net
and has part of his body above the top of the net.
These are what I have gained from the discussions and I believe that I would be able
to apply these during volleyball games.
2. Volleyball scores are important to the game. It is the main root for deciding which teams are
winning and losing.

A side out is used as a guide to an absolute rule, this is where only the service team
will score. Now, however, the sense of the side out has changed. A side out now referred to
when the receiving party is going to serve regardless whether they receive a point or not. The
scoring system has been changed to the rally system. A rally is a series of plays that
determines each point from the moment the ball is served before the ball is out of bounds. If
the serving side wins the rally, they will have to serve, and if the receiving team wins the
rally, they will be given the chance to serve. Rally score is when the team gets a point when
the opponent fails to return the ball over the net, or when the ball goes out of bounds,
commits a violation or makes an error when serving. If the opposing team fails to return the
ball over the net, smash the ball out of bounds, perform a violation or make a service error,
the serving team wins a point. It even counts for the receiving team.

Games are played until the team reaches 25 points and at least has a lead of two
points to win the game. Many games have five sets, so to win, a player would have taken
three out of five sets. The last set is up to 15 points and the team must have a lead of two
points to take the set. For side scoring, all sets are played up to 15 points and the team must
have at least two points of lead. Other organizations say that the first team to win 17 points
wins the set, so there is no need for a two-point margin in this situation. There are a variety of
ways for a player to score a point in volleyball, such as: When the opponent strikes the ball
past the legal limit, by successfully grounding the ball on the side of the court of the rival, if
the opponent strikes the ball more than three times before the ball is returned to the net, when
your opponent hits the net while playing the ball, when the opponent touches the ball on the
other hand, before the strike reaches the player, and when the team of the competitor
commits a service error.

When playing any sport, it is a necessity to know every detail needed to carry it out
successfully as we enjoy every moment of the game. It is indeed advantageous to be well-
informed.
