Chapter 6: Division of Numbers

Subject: Mathematics

Std :III Div : Name: Roll No.: Date:

Division is equal sharing or equal grouping.

*In equal sharing we know how many groups
are there and we try to find out how many are
there in each group.

Number of objects ÷ Number of groups =

Number in each group.

*In equal grouping we know

how
many in each group and we try
to find how many groups are
there.

Number of objects ÷ Number

in each group = Number of
groups.
*Rules of Division:-
1. Any number divided by itself gives
1 as the quotient.

eg. 32 ÷ 32 = 1

2. You cannot divide by zero.

3. Any number divided by 1 gives the number

itself as the quotient.

eg. 17 ÷ 1 = 17

*Terms used in Division:--

*How to divide:--

2
*Long division method:--

You must have noticed that the method of

dividing a 4-digit number is same as
dividing a 3-digit number. Usually quotient
is denoted by the alphabet ‘Q’ , divisor by ‘D’
and remainder by ‘R’.

Also, remember:

* A number which when divided by 2 leaves no

remainder is called even number. If it leaves a remainder, then it is called
an odd number.

*Any number ending with ‘0’ 0r ‘5’ in the ones place is always divisible by 5.

*All even numbers are divisible by 2.

*Checking in division:--

Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend

*Division by 10 and 100:--

When we divide any number by 10, the digit in the ones place of the
number is the remainder and the remaining digits of the
number form the quotient. For example: 137 ÷
10, Quotient = 13 7 = Remainder

Similarly, when we divide any number by 100,

the digits in the tens and ones place of the
number form the remainder and the
remaining digits form the quotient.

For example: 8349 ÷ 10

Quotient — 83 49 — Remainder

(8). 91 ÷ 7 (9). 75 ÷ 6 (10). 96 ÷ 6

B. Divide and check your answer:--

a.840 ÷ 4 b.909 ÷ 9 c.660 ÷ 6 d.648 ÷ e.402 ÷ 2 f.369 ÷
