Introduction to agricultural and bioenvironmental

engineering [ABE 101]

Contact hours: 60 Hours (3 Hour Lecture, 1 Hour Practical)
Credit units: 3.0
Practical 1: Identification of areas of application of various engineering
disciplines in solving agricultural problems. Students should know
the practical application of related engineering fields contributing to
solving agricultural problems.
Practical 2: Produce a chart of the areas of specialization and other sub-areas
in agricultural engineering. students should produce charts for
display.
Learning resources: Wall charts, drawings, photographs, etc.
Practical 3: Identification of various power sources and machinery used in
agricultural engineering. guide students to identify different
implements, tools, equipment, and machinery used in agriculture.
Learning resources: Catalogs, charts, different implements, tools,
equipment, and machinery
Practical 4: Identification of specific type of power in use, their mode of
generation and utilization in the college farm. Guide students to
identify specific power sources available in a specific area.
Learning resources: Farmstead and various power sources.
Practical 5: Visit a tractor sales or hiring unit, observe various tractors in use,
and classify the tractors observed. Identification of the functional
units of the tractor. Tabulate the units and their various functions.
Learning resources: Site visit to a tractor sales or hiring unit.
Practical 6: Visit erosion control sites or display pictures or films to show
various methods of erosion control. Identify each structure, describe
its constructional features as well as the process of using it.
Learning resources: Site visit to an erosion control site or show films.
Practical 7: Site visitations: Visit an irrigated farm or show films to
demonstrate the applications of soil and water engineering.
Learning resources: Site visit to an irrigated farm or show films.
Practical 8: Visit to a suitable farm site or views on slides and/or films of
irrigation and draining operations. Identify the various irrigation and
draining equipment. Describe their features and principles of
operations.
Learning resources: Site visit to an irrigated farm or show films.
Practical 9: Carry out measurements of hydraulic characteristics of water
control structures like weirs, flumes etc.
Learning resources: Site visit to an irrigated farm or show films. Use
appropriate hydraulic measuring devices such as weirs, flumes etc.
Practical 10: Identify different farm structures within the farm, their features
and uses. Make sketches.
Learning resources: Machinery building, farm houses, abattoir,
warehouse, processing centers etc.
Practical 11: Identify and explain the different features of the various types of
animal housing units.
Learning resources: Animal houses, poultry houses, rabbitry etc.
Practical 12: Identify and explain the different features of the various types of
crop storage facilities.
Learning resources: crop storage facilities e.g. barn, silo, rhumbus,
crib, etc.
Practical 13: Visit the nearest farm settlement. Outline the key buildings and
their role.
Learning resources: Farmstead, farm settlement e.g. Ayaragu farm
settlement, individual and integrated farms etc.
Practical 14: Visit neighbouring farms or project sites where electricity is used
in farm operations. Write your observations.
Learning resources: Individual and integrated farms, small/medium
agricultural industry etc.
Practical 15: Demonstrate and explain the uses of any of the available
processing and storage facilities.
Learning resources: Individual and integrated farms, small/medium
agricultural industry where such facilities are available etc.
