Meet the Video Team
Born Texan, Educated Buff

" Chris Jenkins (also sometimes referred to as “Boy of

Destiny/ Hope of Mankind”...By Himself) grew up in Amarillo,
Texas. If you caught him on a normal day he would probably
be writing or working while listening to Led Zeppelin. He
absolutely loves movies and wants to make them someday,
even if he can get his start in Las Vegas. What better city is
there to get your feet wet in entertainment?

" Jessica Wyers grew up in Grapeland; a little town in the heart of

East Texas, known for the watermelons and home to the world famous
Peanut Festival. She was a small girl in a small town with huge
aspirations. As soon as she could, she left home. In her spare time, this
self-proclaimed Goober Goddess can be found locked in her office looking
for the next alternative rock tour. More importantly, she came to West
Texas A&M as soon as she could, and now she cant wait to be the first out
of...well, anyone she knows to say “Im headed to go to Vegas to work with
Terry Fator.”

Jonathan was born and raised in West Texas and always

had dreams of making it big. Since attending West Texas A&M,
Jonathan has immersed himself in broadcasting by being
involved with everything from radio to film. He loves being
outdoors and experiencing new things and his biggest dream is
to work in media for the Green Bay Packers.

Video Editing Notes
! What is next is just for you to be able to in a way see our
process throughout working on this project. Most of this is what our
main effects editor, Chis does to remember ideas, remember what he
was going to do next, and just notes about the new software we got
for this project. At any given time, you would find dozens of
scratch pieces of paper around what we have dubbed as our “command
center.”

! The software we invested in is called Trapcode

Particular. Its an amazing program that allows us to
manipulate the 3D space in After Effects as well as
adding advanced particle effects. Theres tons it can
do and we definitely had a learning curve, and above is
Chris’s way of making sure he was learning everything
he wanted to use in the Pre-show Video.
! More notes on Motion
Tracking and the advanced
Particle systems we used.
! And then: The creativity
began flowing! These are notes
e
ats to b
when thinking about how we were
T h
ed e going to incorporate the Puppets.
oss n t h
pp to It’s pretty amazing how accurate
su ins tle! this drawing is to what ended up
W r
Tu being the final sequence in After
Effects.
! As you can see, there’s a
lot of documentation of just
about everything we did from
the actual production to notes
about what we were thinking
about wearing and saying in our
presentation.
! Some of Jessica’s notes from the
very beginning of the project when we
were discussing the flow and what we
would be needing before we traveled
to Vegas. Some sketches of what your
site map for the first 20 minutes of
the project would look like.
! Over the time so far that we
have been working, Jessica kinda
made sure that we all stayed on
track. We were a team, but some of
us focused on certain aspect so that
we could stay as effecient as
possible. This is a huge project.
So just to be our best, and so we
didn’t get burned out, we each had
certain responsibilities.

Research Component
Two students will be working with Dr Nick Gerlich, Professor of
Marketing and Head of the MMGB Department, to do market research for the
Terry Fator Show. “The project encompasses all aspects of a typical market
research effort for a consumer product,” Gerlich said, “but with the added twist
that it is for an experience.”

Gerlich and his students will work closely with Terry Fator Show
management to gain a solid understanding of the “product” they provide, and
then start developing methods of interacting with Las Vegas tourists to gauge
their views about Terry Fator. “This includes working with folks who are fans of
Terry, as well as those who have never seen him before,” Gerlich added. “We
want to find out who the typical Terry Fator Show fan is, what they like, etc.,
but also learn about the people who might not know about him at all.”

Students will build survey instruments using the Qualtrics online survey
site for which the MMGB Department holds a license. “Qualtrics is the premier
online survey tool. It is the gold standard in market research, and our students
will finish this project with an authentic experience no different from what they
would have when they go to work in industry.”

Gerlich noted that the surveys will be available not just online via email
and Facebook invitations, but also via smartphones and wifi tablet devices like
the iPad. “This will allow us to invite fans right in the theater to take our survey
during or after the show, as well as take our research to the streets. Man-on-
the-street intercept interviews can be completed easily on the iPad, and will let
us interact with the general public, not just Terry’s established fans.”

Once the data collection phase is complete, students will analyze the
data using the SPSS software package back at WT. “Students will get to apply all
of the techniques they learned in Stats class and in Market Research,” Gerlich
said.

The effort will conclude with a thorough written report detailing the
methodology and findings, as well as recommendations for management.

Gear Justification
Canon EOS Rebel T2i
" Not the best on the market, but is a good starter, and leaves room for growth.
It is half the price as the next step up, and shoots almost identical video. The last
season finale of House was shot on this camera.

Bescor Tripod
" This tripod has a bubble leveling head, and full pan/tilt locks. Not super heavy
duty, but since the fore mentioned camera is pretty light, much more is not
necessary.

Audio Technia 897 Shotgun Mic & Zoom H4N Audio Recorder
" These two pieces of equipment will go hand in hand. This particular camera
does not necessarily get good on-board audio on its own. So, a good mic and
separate audio recored will be vital to getting usable audio for projects.

Internship Criteria
• Mass Communication internship arrangement with the Terry Fator organization

• To begin in Summer 2011 and continue throughout each long semester.

• First internship will be responsible for shooting and editing video to build social media
and online content, as well as audience interviews.

• The intern will receive a stipend sufficient to cover living expenses in Las Vegas

• This strategic internship will allow WTAMU Mass Communication students to showcase
their skills in one of the most dynamic entertainment venues in the world.

• Future internships will focus on other areas of emphasis including market research,
social media strategies and public relations.
