ANZ, Taylors 90th Birthday Special Edition

Taylors 90th Birthday Celebrations across Campuses

On Wednesday 20th
October, Taylors College
Melbourne staff hosted
over 300 guests to an
evening on the campus,
marking 90 years of Taylors
College in Melbourne.
The student common room
and reception area were
decorated with photos
from the past, program
banners, balloons and a
digital presentation on the
history of Taylors College played continuously on the flat screen monitors.

Guests included past staff and students, university representatives, Melbourne

agents, past owners of Taylors College and present staff and students.

After a welcome address from the Campus Director, Craige Proctor, the Head of the
English Foundation faculty, and in-house historian gave a 15 minute run through the
highlights of Taylors 90 year history. The
Taylors College Choir presented two
wonderful items and commemorative
Taylors teddy bears were presented to
selected lucky guests

Kaye Boniface, who has worked at Taylors

for 46 years and Katie Phan, the
chairperson of the Student Representative
Committee officiated in the cutting of the
90th birthday cake. Guests and staff all
enjoyed the evening very much.

And at Taylors College, Sydney on the same day, visiting local

agents and 47 teams of students were enjoying themselves
participating in the campus’s first Amazing Race Competition!
Congratulations to the multicultural, multi‐course winners
Pooja Suranjan, Nguyen Thuy Linh, Michelle & Jessica Rompis,
who took 25 minutes at 5 stations to score 106 points. They took home trophies and
prizes commemorating Taylors 90th anniversary.
Local agents, who were greeted by Management, Deans and Directors of Studies and
catching up on the latest updates at Taylors College, spent the afternoon
participating in the exciting Amazing Race Competition before joining students and
staff for a College-wide assembly and Birthday Cake!

On Friday 29 October Taylors Auckland

campus celebrated the 90th anniversary
of the school’s establishment in
Melbourne in 1920.

Around 80 guests gathered in the

campus’ student common room for a
cocktail event. Past students, staff from
our partner universities, top agents and
staff from the Saudi Arabian Cultural
Mission all came to congratulate Taylors
on 90 years in education, and to book in
for the 100th birthday party!
The Campus Director welcomed guests and reflected on the impressive growth of
the school and its reputation, locally and internationally. He also spoke of the
changing face of Taylors. What began as a school giving local students a “second
chance” at a tertiary education, now prepares many thousands of international
students for the life-changing experience of a university education in Australia and
New Zealand. We also took the opportunity to announce the Auckland Campus
winners of the 2010 staff awards. It is the hard work and professionalism of the staff
that make Taylors such a great place to work and study.

The formal part of the evening was

completed after the cutting of the
Taylors College Birthday Cake,
decorated with the Taylors logo and
birthday colours.

Taylors Auckland Sponsors Alumni Architecture Project

University of Auckland Architecture student and TAFY
alumni, Forrest Chen, recently exhibited a group project
at The University of Auckland student Skyrise event at
Auckland Architecture week. Taylors College was a
proud sponsor of Forrest and his team at the exhibition.

The brief for the project was to construct a structure of

at least six meters tall with a narrow base which
reflected Bio-mimicry, held light well and used recycled
materials.

Forrest’s project team named ‘Lymphiam’ built a

structure based on organic material which was woven
together by hand with thick rope.

Other interesting exhibits were based on the forms of jellyfish and sea urchins and
ethereal structures lit from within.
TAFY principal, Lindsay Spedding; TAFY DOS, Ted Dawe and Marketing Manager,
Nicola Conway attended the event in support of Forrest.

Forrest’s team were thrilled to receive a highly commended award for their efforts.
Well done to Forrest and his group for a tremendous effort.
Safety Talk
On the 5th of October, Asian Liaison Officer Jessica Phuang and Constable Howie Hao
YIN from The New Zealand Police gave Taylors students a safety seminar at the
Langham Hotel. Topics were road safety and international students personal safety
living in Auckland. TELP and july and Spetember TAFY students were among the
attendees and this biannual Seminar, the last one held in February of this year.

From TELP to TAFY: An Auckland Initiative

The Auckland Campus of Taylors College recently staged a number of events aimed
at closing the gap between TAFY and TELP.

The two main events of this initiative were gatherings aimed at giving information,
meeting the key people in the Foundation School, asking important questions and
just having a good time in the Foundation part of the College.

The students from TELP were welcomed by the Campus Director Lindsay Spedding
who encouraged then to hold true to their dreams of tertiary education and
reiterated the importance of these qualifications in societies of the future.

After this Ted Dawe, Director of Studies for TAFY spoke to them about the nature of
the TAFY programme, the differences between Foundation English study and TELP
English and the sorts of subjects which were on offer.

Finally it fell to the Tertiary Counsellor, Allison McCallum, to explain the importance
of good marks, the partnerships which Taylors had with leading New Zealand
Universities and the sorts of career paths which a university education led to.

The students had been well prepared by their TELP teachers and were able to ask a
number of key questions.
Why is there a marks difference between Taylors and ACG?
How can I pursue a Graphics degree with a general Art course?
What were the pre-requisite subjects and mark requirements for particular degree
courses?

It was a good chance for some 'slow motion' explanation with further clarification in
Chinese by Margaret Chen if required.
After this food and drink were served and the shyer students were able to ask
specific questions on a quiet one-to-one basis. Some just chose this opportunity to
make themselves known and to share a few of their dreams and aspirations.

It was a very worthwhile meeting, so much so that it has been decided that this is to
be an on-going process. It recognises how important it is to ensure that students are
not lost sight of in language programmes but rather are connected to the people and
programmes which will one day be instrumental in realising their university
ambitions.

The Human Geographers Trip

On the 13th of October 20 Human
Geographers experienced the thrill
of Auckland’s train network! They
made a journey out west to visit a
co-housing community who have
chosen to live in an
environmentally sustainable way.

What is a sustainable community?

Government has raised GST rate in New Zealand

The NZ government raised GST rates from 12.5% to 15% on 1 October 2010. TAFY
and TELP fees will now be subject to the new GST rate of 15%.

Activity Day at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre

On September 8, Year 10 students attended
an Activity Day at MSAC, otherwise known
as the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic
Centre to enjoy a morning of basketball,
badminton and table tennis. For the first
time, students from TELP who would be
graduating into the October intake or
January intake next year were invited to
join the current Year 10 students. This was
designed to give the TELP students the opportunity to meet some of their future
teachers and talk to the current students about their experiences in Year 10. After
some fast and furious games of table tennis and a very competitive round of
basketball the students worked up quite an appetite. Lunch included lots of pizza
and drinks at Lake Albert. Even after all the morning’s sport some still had energy for
a casual kick of a football with the teachers. Students commented that they found
the experience positive and they felt more confident in moving to their new
programs. Current students were very welcoming and were happy to make new
friends.

Year 10 Mock Interviews

As a part of Year 10 Business
students completed a unit on
Careers. This involved each
student taking on the role of a
character that has finished
school and is applying for their
first job. Students studied the
importance of writing a well-
planned resume with clear
descriptions of their skills and qualifications. They also combined this with the need
to introduce themselves well and pique the interest of prospective employers with
well written application letters. The ultimate goal was to win the position by
excelling in the job interview. To help students understand the importance of the
whole process and to practice the skills taught in class each student is assigned a
staff member who would interview them as if they were applying for a real position
in a company. Although many students were nervous about being interviewed, they
all performed very well and managed to show just how much they had learnt in
class. After completing their first interview this they had the following advice for
next year’s Year 10’s:
 Be calm and confident
 Make eye contact with the interviewer
 Prepare carefully
 Know about the job and company
 Dress professionally
 Be prepared for extra questions

Fraud Warning
Dear Partners,
We appreciate your diligence in reminding your students to be safe and smart,
especially when it comes to offers that are ‘too good to be true’ such as the frauds
described below. Please note that these incidences have not occurred at either
Taylors College or the University of Western Australia.

Thank You
Taylors College Staff

The Major Fraud Squad are investigating a number of offences centred on Curtin and
Edith Cowan Universities.

During the past two months a number of students from China have been approached
by Chinese nationals with an offer to pay the students tuition fees. The students
accepted and on checking their respective fee accounts found that the fees had been
paid. The students then paid $90 % of their fees to that person.

It transpired that the fees were paid using stolen Chinese credit cards and the
transactions were subsequently declined leaving the students out of pocket and liable
for paying their fees in full.
The current total amount defrauded is approximately $500,000. Investigations are
continuing.
Major Fraud Squad would like to hear from any students who have been approached
or who have accepted the above offer.

Halloween Ball
On Friday 29th of October, Taylors hosted
the annual Halloween Ball. With more than
120 students attending, for many of them this
will be their final chance to let their hair
down and have some fun before sitting their
final exams in November. The event was
held at the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe
and started at 18:30 so that the students could
watch the beautiful sunset.

Most students put in a massive effort with

their costumes, they looked fantastic, and
prizes were given to the 2 best male costumes and 2 best female costumes. Our 2
female winners were Nur Ainina Abdul Sukor from Malaysia, for Poison Ivy and
Michella Carol Lima Guterres Mali from East Timor for her vampire costume.

Our two best males were Ahmed Awadh Alfaki from Saudi Arabia for his Woody the
cowboy costume and Daniel Chai from Singapore for his Lara Croft impersonation.

One of our students decided to celebrate his 19th birthday at the ball and so we made
sure it did not go un-noticed. So it was a very Happy Birthday to Chi Lap Wong from
Hong Kong.
Staff were also on hand to show support and also made a good effort in their
costumes. As well as birthdays and prizes there was music, which some students
decided was a great opportunity to show off their breakdancing skills, providing
plenty of entertainment for onlookers!

And as the clock turned midnight, and the full moon shone, the evening was over (not
just because some were turning into werewolves). A big thank you must be made to
the Taylors Student Services Team, who organised the venue, music, food and
decorations for this great evening. From the all the photos taken, we can safely say
that staff and students, enjoyed themselves immensely and we look forward to hosting
another ball in June next year.
