 From The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! It is said that the phrase “Do not
be afraid” occurs 366 times in the Bible (one for every
day of the year, including leap years!). I cannot verify
that claim, but I can verify easily that in this week’s
Gospel (Matthew, 6: 24-34), Jesus tells his disciples
(and us) not once, but on five separate occasions, “Do
not worry.”
That’s great advice, but we all have our worries just
the same: health concerns, personal safety, unemploy-
ment, mortgage and car payments, school tuition, and
so on. Not to mention the real and perceived dangers
of our age: the threat of global terrorism, civil unrest
in many parts of the world, the growing gap between
‘rich’ and ‘poor’ countries and people, and so on.
So, how are we to respond to Jesus’ call to consider
the lilies of the field? Is He dreaming? Doesn’t He
know how stressful life can be? How are we to shed
our fears and anxieties when the truth is that some-
times we feel we are being swallowed up by them?
Jesus is anything but naïve. He understands full well
our fears and concerns, both real and projected—just
as He understood full well the needs and anxieties of
His disciples—people, it can be argued, who lived in
even more precarious times than our own. What is He
trying to say to us, then?
Jesus invites, reminds, and challenges us to keep our
focus on God—a God who loves us and will never
abandon us, no matter what we may be going through.
“In God We Trust” is not just a motto for our coins; it is
a guiding principle of the Christian life. When in doubt,
we need to remember that God is in charge. We grow
in trust and confidence when we admit our fears and
misgivings, call upon God for help, and allow God to
assist us (especially through the people He puts into
our lives)—and, by the way, extend ourselves to help
those who are worse off than we are. Then, we can
begin to breathe more securely and confidently. The
anxiety may never go away completely, but we
certainly can work to put things into perspective. And
learn to worry less.
Elsewhere in the Parish:
This weekend we will be joining in the kickoff for the
Annual Catholic Appeal. The Appeal provides for
Diocesan-wide needs. This year, Bishop Brom has
called special attention to the needs of nearly a dozen
growing parishes in Imperial County which desperately
need funds to build and expand worship space. We
welcome home to the parish, several members of the
Sisters of the Precious Blood, the order that formerly
staffed our parish school. The Sisters will be here for a
meeting of their congregation. Many thanks to all who
worked so hard and/or exchanged “cash for
calories” (!) in our Brother Kelly Cookie Sale for the
support of our OLG Sports Court project. We are still
fine-tuning plans for a reconfiguration of seating in
the Serra Center, which will begin soon. We will be
posting plans on the slide show before Mass and
consulting parish and ministry leaders. We welcome
your response. Speaking of the Serra Center, we hope
you like the new paint job, done this week by Adajj
Pro Painting. Monies for this project were provided by
our Capital Improvements account, which consists
primary of specified donations bequeathed by
parishioners. Many thanks!
Finally, we will be celebrating the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick on March 5 & 6 (Sat: 7:30 am, 5
pm, 7 pm Masses; Sunday: 7 am, 8 am).

SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The parish will be offering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday,
March 5, during the English 7:30 a.m., 5:00 p.m. Masses and the 7:00 p.m. Spanish
Mass and on Sunday, March 6, during the 7 & 8 a.m. Masses. This is a one day event
only, so if you wish to receive this sacrament, please attend any of these Masses.

 LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
Fasting (the eating of one main meal and two smaller
meals with no in between snacks) applies to those between
ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be
hampered in their work by fasting. The only days that are
legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are
encouraged but not obligated by law.
Abstinence (the exclusion of meat for the entire day)
includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the
loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s
health. The days of full Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. The other Fridays and possibly Wednesdays of
Lent are encouraged but not obligated by law!
Lent is a time for us to voluntarily choose to do penance
and mortification as an expression of gratitude for God for
what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death.
It is an attempt to respond to the love that He so willingly
gave to us.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Join us for Stations of the Cross on Fridays: March 11, 18,
25, April 1, and 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Parish Chapel and on
April 8th, for a special Multicultural Stations of the Cross in
the *Mission Grounds from 6:30-7:30 p.m. followed by soup
and bread in the parish Dining Rm.
(*In the event of rain, the Stations of the Cross will be moved
to the Serra Center.)
HOUSEKEEPING ‐ WEEK THREE 
Let’s review where your contributions are at work. First we
talked about support of diocesan programs to the tune of
about $144,000 per year, then total annual salaries for staff,
priests and others of about $443,000 per year.
Are you reasonably comfortable (no please don’t answer
that) when you are here. Our utility expense including
electricity, gas, water and sewer, and trash removal will cost
us about $72,000.
I hope that you see by now that our operating
expenses here at the parish are not unlike yours at home,
just on a larger scale. Just as your expense budget at home
must be in line with your income, so must ours.
As we continue to try to be good stewards of what you
bring us, just please recognize that your support is needed

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at the Parish
Mass & Dinner
Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland was born in
what is now Britain, the son of a Roman family. As
a boy he was captured by pirates and sold into
slavery in Ireland. After some years he escaped
and found his way home. Following a family tradition of
service in the church, Patrick was ordained a priest and later
consecrated a bishop. He was sent back to Ireland in 432 to
lead the evangelization of the island . Ever sensitive to the
customs and traditions of the Celtic people he succeeded to
winning over the kings and people of Ireland peacefully. He is
known as the Apostle of Ireland. His feast day is on the 17th
of March.
There will be a Mass to celebrate St. Patrick at the Old
Mission Church on March 16th at 6:30 p.m. This will be
followed by a Pot Luck Dinner in the Mission Dining Rm.
Please bring something to share: Appetizer, entrée or des-
sert. Drinks will be provided. Fáilte go dtí an Féile Padraig!

Witness to Hope
The Biography of Pope John Paul II
by George Weigel
He was an actor, poet and playwright who enjoyed the
outdoors, the first non-Italian Pope since 1523, and
instrumental in the fall of institutions and dictators around
the world. He lived with assassination attempts and
Parkinson’s disease. He took the Papacy to the world, and on
May 1, 2011, Karol Wojtyla--Pope John Paul II--will be
beatified in Rome.
In this biography, George Weigel uses a chronological
approach to introduce the reader to the life and significance
of John Paul II. He explores the early life and world shattering
events that influenced the man’s ideas and approach to
ministry and world relations. He follows the application of
John Paul’s beliefs to church teachings as he faces major
theological, moral and secular issues of the day. Weigel
includes information on the Pope’s role in the fall of
communism and dictators, as well as correspondence with
world leaders. Finally, the author relates John Paul’s efforts
to bridge his church, other Christian denominations, and the
major religions of the world.
In researching this biography, George Weigel, a Roman
Catholic theologian and leading commentator on religion and
public life, had unusually open access to the Pope and his
friends. This has resulted in an excellent book which
thoroughly documents one of the most important
pontificates in centuries, one that changed the course of
history and papal relations with the modern world.

PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. MARIO DICICCO
Franciscan Fr. Mario DiCicco, president

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO…
Querida Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y todo bien!
¡Se dice que la frase “No se preocupen” aparece 366 veces
en la Biblia (una vez en cada día del año, incluyendo los años
bisiestos! Yo no puedo verificar ese dicho pero sí puedo veri-
ficar fácilmente que en el Evangelio de Mateo (6:24-34) de
esta semana, Jesús le dice a sus discípulos (y a nosotros, no
una vez, sino en cinco ocasiones separadas, “No se preocu-
pen.”
Esto es un consejo bueno, pero todos nosotros, aún así, te-
nemos nuestras preocupaciones: la salud, la seguridad per-
sonal, el desempleo, las hipotecas y los pagos del carro, las
matrículas escolares y demás. Sin mencionar los peligros
reales y que se perciben de nuestra edad: la amenaza del
terrorismo global, las inquietudes y disturbios políticos en
muchas partes del mundo, la disparidad creciente entre los
países ‘ricos’ y los ’pobres’ y su gente, y mucho más.
¿Así pues, cómo vamos a responder a la llamada de Jesús de
que consideremos los lirios del campo? ¿Está El soñando?
¿No sabe El lo interesante que puede ser la vida? ¿Cómo
nosotros vamos a poder sacarnos nuestros temores y nues-
tras ansiedades, cuando la verdad es que a veces nosotros
sentimos que estamos siendo tragados por ellos?
Jesús no es nada ingenuo. El entiende muy bien nuestros
temores y nuestras preocupaciones, las reales y las potencia-
les—al igual que El conocía muy bien las necesidades y las
ansiedades de los discípulos—gente, aún cuando esto puede
discutirse, que vivía en tiempos más precarios que los nues-
tros. ¿Qué es pues, lo que El está tratando de decirnos a
nosotros?
Jesús nos invita, nos recuerda y nos reta a que nos manten-
gamos enfocados en Dios—un Dios que nos ama y que nun-
ca nos abandonará, no importa por lo que estemos pasando.
“Confiamos en Dios” no es solo un lema en nuestras mone-
das; es un principio de guía de la vida Cristiana. Cuando esta-
mos en dudas, necesitamos recordar que Dios está a cargo.
Nosotros crecemos en confianza y credulidad cuando admiti-
mos nuestros temores y nuestras faltas, le pedimos ayuda a
Dios y permitimos a Dios ayudarnos (especialmente a través
de la gente que Dios pone en nuestras vidas) y nos permite
extendernos a ayudar a aquellos que están peor que noso-
tros. Entonces nosotros podemos empezar a respirar con
más seguridad y más confianza. La ansiedad puede que nun-
ca nos deje completamente, pero nosotros ciertamente po-
dremos trabajar a poner las cosas en perspectiva. Y así
aprenderemos a preocuparnos menos.

En otras áreas de la Parroquia. Este fin de semana estare-
mos uniéndonos al inicio de la Petición Católica Anual. La
Petición provee ayuda para las necesidades amplias Diocesa-
nas. Este año el Obispo Brom ha puesto una atención espe-
cial a las necesidades de alrededor de una docena de parro-
quias en crecimiento en el Condado Imperial que necesitan
fondos desesperadamente para construir y expandir el espa-
cio de adoración. Nosotros le damos la bienvenida a nuestra
parroquia a varios miembros de la orden de las Hermanas
de la Sangre Preciosa, quienes pertenecieron al personal de
nuestra escuela. Estas Hermanas estarán aquí para una reu-
nión de su congregación. Muchas gracias a los que trabaja-
ron arduamente o que cambiaron “dinero en efectivo por
calorías” en nuestra Venta de Galletas del Hermano Kelly
para apoyar el proyecto de nuestra Cancha Deportiva, Ntra.
Sra. De Guadalupe… Nosotros aún estamos planeando una
reconfiguración del Centro Serra, la cual comenzará a efec-
tuarse pronto. Nosotros estaremos presentando planes al
efecto antes de las Misas y consultando los líderes parro-
quiales y los líderes de los ministerios. Agradeceremos sus
respuestas… Hablando del Centro Serra, esperamos que a
ustedes les agrade el trabajo nuevo de la pintura, hecho
esta semana por ‘Adajj Pro Painting.’ El dinero para este pro-
yecto provino de nuestra Cuenta Capital para Mejoras, la
cual consiste primariamente de donaciones específicas lega-
das por feligreses. ¡Muchas gracias! Finalmente, nosotros
estaremos celebrando el Sacramento de la Unción de los
Enfermos en las Misas del 5 y 6 de marzo (sábado: 7:30
a.m., 5:00 p.m. y 7:00 p.m.; domingo: 7:00 a.m. y 8:00 a.m.)

Veamos donde sus contribuciones están trabajando. Prime-
ro hablamos de apoyar los programas diocesanos con unos
$144,000 por año, después el total de salarios anuales para el
personal, los sacerdotes y otros de aproximadamente
$443,000 por año. ¿Estás tu razonablemente cómodo (no con-
testen por favor) cuando estás aquí? Nuestro gasto de utilida-
des incluyendo electricidad, gas, el agua y el colector, y el re-
mover la basura nos costará alrededor de $72,000. Yo espero
que ustedes vean que nuestros gastos de operación aquí en la
parroquia son similares a los de su casa, nada más en una es-
cala más grande. Así como hacen su presupuesto en casa para
estar dentro de su ingreso, así nosotros también. Al nosotros
continuar a ser buenos corresponsables de los que ustedes
aportan, por favor, reconozcan que su apoyo es necesitado y
apreciado.
