Course Description Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audience and for various purposes (CMO 20 s
2013)

Purposive Communication is a three unit course that develops students’ communicative competence and their cultural and
intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately
to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and
focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The
knowledge skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen
disciplines and their future careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, written audio-visual and/or web-based output for
various purposes.

Week Topic Intended Learning Outcomes


Communication processes, principles, and ethics At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
1 a. explain the principles and process of communication and the ethical
considerations in communication;
b. elucidate how communication skills help resolve problems, better
understand new concepts, and aid in your profession; and
c. frame a slogan about how the knowledge of the communication
process aids people in communicating effectively.
2 Communication and Globalization At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
a. write a reaction paper on communication challenges in a global
atmosphere and methods for effective and ethical global
communication; and
b. create two-minute informative video about communication and
globalization.

3 Local and Global Communication in Multicultural Settings At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
a. cite examples on how to enhance one’s ability to communicate with
people from diverse cultures; and
b. create a three-to four-minute presentation about various cultural
modes of communication of a certain country.
4 Varieties and Registers of Spoken and Written Language At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
a. apply the varieties and registers of spoken and written language in the
proper context
5 Evaluating Messages and/ or images of different cultures At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
a. analyze media messages and/or images using Key Concepts of Media
Literary framework; and
b. create a multimodal advertisement of a cause-oriented event.
6-8 Communication Aids and Strategies using tools of Technology At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
1. Preparing Multimedia Presentation a. create a multimedia presentation showcasing one’s culture;
2. Preparing Pecha Kucha Presentation b. present a Pecha Kucha about one’s region; and
3. Blogging c. create a blog promoting one’s unique culture and tradition.
9 MIDTERM EXAMINATION
10-11 Communication for Various Purposes At the end of this week, the students should be able to:
1. Informative, Persuasive, and Argumentative a. create a public service announcement regarding environmental

3. Tour Guiding c. identify the essential details of a lead;
4. Communication for Teachers: Storytelling d. write a lead for a news article;
5. Communication for Business and Trade e. create an effective promotional multimedia material for tourists;
6. Writing Business and Trade f. write effective tour commentaries;
7. Communication for Employment: The Resume g. describe pictures within a given time frame;
