B. Concept Notes
Composition of Functions:
The composition of functions f with g is denoted by f° g and is defined by the equation.
(f° g)(x) = f(g(x))
Example:
Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x2 + 4, find:
a. (f° g ¿ (x) b. (g° f ¿ (x) c. (f° g ¿ (2)
Solution:
a. Because (f° g ¿ (x) means f(g(x)), we must replace each occurrence of x in the function f by g(x).
f(x) = 4x – 5 Given equation of f
(f° g ¿ (x) = f(g(x)) = 4 (g(x)) – 5 Replace x by g(x).
= 4 (x2 + 4) – 5 Replace g(x) by x2 + 4
= 4x2 + 16 – 5 Apply Distributive Law.
(f° g ¿ (x) = 4x2 + 11 Combine like terms.

b. Because (g° f ¿ (x)means g(f(x)), we must replace each occurrence of x in the function g by f(x).
f(x) = 4x – 5 Given equation of f
(g° f ¿ (x) = g(f(x)) = g (4x – 5 ) Replace x by f(x).
= (4x – 5 )2 + 4 Replace g(x) by x2 + 4
= 16x2 - 40x + 25 + 4 Apply Distributive Law.
= 16x2 - 40x + 29 Combine like terms.
Thus, (g° f ¿ (x) = = 16x - 40x + 29
2

c. (f° g ¿ (2)
(f° g ¿ (x) = 4x2 + 11
(f° g ¿ (2) = 4(2)2 + 11 = 4(4) + 11 = 16 + 11 = 26
C. Post Test
Direction: Answer the following:
1. Let f(x) = 3x – 5 and g(x) = 7 -2x
Find: a. (f° g ¿ (x) b. (g° f ¿ (x) c. (f° g ¿ (2)

2. Let f(x) = x2 – 2x and g(x) = 2x- 3

Find: a. (f° g ¿ (x) b. (g° f ¿ (x) c. (f° g ¿ (2)
