What is a C.V.?

Your CV (curriculum vitae) is your personal advertisement or sales

brochure and, if completed effectively, could be a useful tool in
gaining a new career. It should be a clear and concise history of
your experience and achievements, highlighting particular
qualities relevant to the position that you are applying for.

Most companies will require CV’s as part of their recruitment

process and even if they don’t, they will interview you before
offering you employment.
The best to prepare for an interview is by writing a CV. By doing so
you would have a lot of thought into and clearly answer mot of the
questions you could be asking at the interview.

What should it look like?

• Ideally your CV should be neatly laid out with uniform spacing

on no more than two sides of A4 paper. (if at all possible) .

• If should be carefully checked for spelling and grammar

mistakes.

• It should be written using short punchy sentences, avoiding

long winded explanations.

• Your achievements should be stated without exaggeration,

you will have to back up your CV at an interview.

Compiled by: mva 1

What should it contain?

• Personal contacts details – name, address, telephone numbers

and email address.

• Personal profile – a couple of sentences that describe the

qualities in your character that would interest an employer.

• Key skills – make a list starting with the strongest or most

relevant to the employers needs.

• Career History – list in reverse order (most recent first) with

the dates and job title.

• Employment and Training – Again in reverse order, adult

education, like taking new training course at work, reflects
particularly well on and individual as it shows commitment to
earning new skills. If you can be bothered to invest in yourself
it is more likely that an employer will invest in you.

• Personal Details – include hobbies and interest, giving

examples relating to the development of the previously
mentioned personal qualities. Try to portray yourself as well
rounded character.

CV Checklist

 The most important thing to bear in mind s that your CV has

only one objective – to get you an interview

 It is an advertisement and should give a clear and easily

understood message. Make it interesting without being long
winded; remember you only get one chance at a first
impression.

 Use plenty of space, with wide margins. It should not look too
daunting to the reader.

 Use key words or “action words” e.g. designed, successfully,

maintained, motivated etc…

 Take time to produce a well drafted CV, an employer will read

a CV assuming that they are seeing the best you can offer,
mistakes are not a good example of you at best.

 Don’t be modest. Sell yourself! If you don’t tell them how good
you are no-one else will.

 When describing your job it might help if you make a list

imagining that you are leaving notes for someone who will be
taking over for a few weeks.

 DO NOT list referees or salary expectations.
