Air pollution is a problem that is normally analyzed in two scales that differ in the impact
and type of pollutants emitted: those that have an impact on a global scale and those that
have an impact on a local scale. On a global scale are greenhouse gases and
stratospheric ozone-depleting gases, which have as a consequence global warming,
changes in weather patterns and the destruction of the ozone layer that protects the
biosphere from solar-ultraviolet B radiation, although some local effects associated with
the worsening of the effects of pollutants that have an impact on a local scale. The latter
are the cause of low air quality in urban centers, with its implications on the quality of life of
the population, and are represented mainly by a group of six pollutants known as
“criterion” pollutants due to their effects on human health and the environment: carbon
monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons (volatile organic compounds), sulfur oxides,
particulate matter, and ground-level ozone
In the context of environmental air pollution in the city of Bogotá, based on in the
information collected through the studies and measurements carried out, identifies that the
capital of the country, exceeds the permitted levels of pollution for the quality of the air that
Bogota citizens breathe. According to data from the Air Quality Monitoring Network
(RMCA), high levels of atmospheric concentrations of material are established particulate
matter, which exceed what is established by environmental regulations Colombian., with
indicators greater than those allowed by the PM10 standard. It is important to underline
that the city is not complying with the previous norm in more than 40% of the annual
measurement period, leading to high exposure of your dwellers to environmental pollution
through the air.
