PRELIMINARY

A.       Background
With master English well, then we will be able to communicate with other nations in the
world. In addition, we will be able to add insight and knowledge we are for the progress of
our nation and state, because we will be able to read literature in English, listening to radio
broadcasts abroad, as well as watching films science others. Thus, in the end we can master
the knowledge-knowledge in all fields.

B.        Identification of the Problem


In this paper we summarize some of which will be discussed, namely:What is
the Passive Voice, formula and how for example?

DISCUSSION

A.                THE PASSIVE


In a passive voice sentence, the subject and object flip-flop. The subject becomes the
passive recipient of the action. (Dalam kalimat pasif, subjek dan objek bertukar. Subjek
menjadi penerimapasif dari tindakan).
Example :
The tray of food was dropped by the waiter.
(Baki makanan dijatuhkan oleh pelayan)
In the case, thedropping is thesubject and it isbeing acted upon by
Waiter(Dalam kasus ini, menjatuhkan adalah subjek dan  itu adalah sedang dilakukan oleh
pelayan).
- We use a passive form to say what happens to the subject : (Kita menggunakan sebuah
bentuk passive untuk menyatakan apa yang terjadi pada subjek)
> The letter was hiddenby Kinasih under the lining of the second drawer. (Surat itu
disembunyikan oleh Kinasih di bawah lapisan laci kedua).
- When we use the passive, who or what causes the action is often unknown or unimportant :
(Ketika kita menggunakan passive, siapa atau apa apa yang menyebabkan tindakan
tersebut).
> The girl was mysteriously killed two years ago. (gadis itu dibunuh dengan misterius 2
tahun yang lalu)
- If we want to state who does or what causes the action in the passive, we use ”by ….”
(Jika kita ingin menyatakan siapa yang melakukan atau apa yang menyebabkan aksi di pasif,
kita menggunakan "oleh…”)
> Twenty people were asked by the police (dua puluh orang ditanyakan oleh polisi).
B.                 FORMULA OF PASSIVE VOICE
(Subject + be + Verb3 + by + Object + modifier)
Active : She buy a book
(Dia membeli sebuah buku)
Passive: A book is bought by her
(Sebuah buku dibeli olehnya)

  Simple present tense


(S + V1(s/es) +O)
Active : Budi writes a letter.

(S + am/is/are +
V3)
Passive : A letter is written by Budi.

  Present continuous
(S + To be + Ving + O)
Active : Servant is cleaning the floor.

(S + is/am/are + being +
V3)
Passive: The floor are being cleaned by the servant.

  Present perfect tense


(S + has/have + V3 + o)
Active : Someone has written the letter.

Passive : The letter has been written by someone.


(S + has/have + been + V3)

(S + V2 + O)
Active : I ate fried rice yesterday.

(S + was/were + V3)
Passive : Fried rice was eaten by me yesterday.

  Simple future
(S + will + V1 + O)
Active : Maggie will wash the car.
(S + will + be +
V3)
Passive : the car will be washed by Maggi

·         Active Voice : My mother always cleans the floor every morning.
·         Passive Voice : The floor is always cleaned by my mother every morning

·         Active Voice : My wife buys a doll at a convenience store
·         Passive Voice : A doll is bought by my wife at a convenience store
·         Active Voice : Sinta writes a letter for her family in Jakarta.
·         Passive Voice : A letter is written by Sinta for her family in Jakarta

> Present Continuous


·         Active Voice :They are making a rainbow cake now.
·         Passive Voice :A rainbow cake is being made by them now
·         Active Voice :Anita is writing the letter right now.
·         Passive Voice :The letter is being written by Anita
·         Active Voice : You are still watching television
·         Passive Voice : The television is being watched by us
·         Active Voice : My mother is cooking cake
·         Passive Voice : The cake is being coooked by my mother

> Present Perfect


·         Active Voice :The manager has interviewed some candidates
·         Passive Voice :Some candidates have been interviewed by the manager.
·         Active Voice :Many tourists have visited that beach.
·         Passive Voice :That beach has been visited by many tourists
·         Active Voice : She does the report in the office.
·         Passive Voice : The report is done by her in the office
·         Active Voice : Amelie helps her mother.
·         Passive Voice : Her mother is usually helped by Amelie
> Past Tense
·         Active Voice : Kinasih hid the letter
·         Passive Voice : The letter was hidden by Kinasih
·         Active Voice : My father repaired the car, yesterday
·         Passive Voice :The car was repaired by my father
·         Active Voice : They ate some cake yesterday.
·         Passive Voice : Some cake was eaten by them yesterday
·         Active Voice : Robin made this mistake
·         Passive Voice : This mistake was made by Robin

>Future Tense
·         Active Voice :Andrew will finish his work by 4:00 P.M
·         Passive Voice :The work will be finished by Andrew at 4:00 P.M
·         Active Voice :The farmers will harvest the crops next week
·         Passive Voice : The crops will be harvested by the farmers next wee
·         Active Voice : You shall visit grandmother in the hospital.
·         Passive Voice : Grandmother will be visited by you in the hospital.
·         Active Voice : I am going to fix my broken flute after school
·         Passive Voice : My broken flute is going to be fixed after school

B. SUGGESTION
As a student active and modern it is appropriate that we are able to speak English
correctly, with this paper is expected to be more friends know and understand about passive
and can apply it in everyday life
