GAME MECHANICS

NAME OF THE GAME:

Slide-Up-Throw!: Teaching Sentence Pattern Using Game-Based Learning

PEDAGOGICAL OBJECTIVES:

1. To identify the elements included in sentence patterns;

2. To distinguish differences between each sentence pattern; and

3. To construct meaningful sentences using any of the sentence patterns.

OVERVIEW

Game Concept

The concept of Slide-Up-Throw was adapted from the game "Tic-Tac-Toe". This

game originated from the Roman Empire around the first century BCE, and its first name

was ‘Temi Lapilli’. Just like Tic-Tac-Toe, Slide-Up-Throw, the game, aims for a player

to form a pattern — but, with a twist. Slide-Up-Throw aims to form a 'Sentence Pattern'

by having the players throw their shoe to their desired box in the platform and after being

able to form a Sentence Pattern, the players may proceed to constructing their own

sample of what type of Sentence Pattern they are able to form using the Slide-Up-Throw

platform.

Materials

These are the materials that are necessary in the activity.

1. Slide-Up-Throw Platform - It has numerous boxes containing one element of

sentence pattern each represented by the letters S,TV, IV,LV,DO,IO,SC and OC.

Any of the elements may be repeated in other boxes so the players may have

additional chances of having their shoe be placed in a specific element until they

are able to form any Sentence Pattern. The platform has a 'BOKYA' part of box

represented by a black color.

2. Shoes – Any kind of shoes may be used by the players as one they will be

throwing in the boxes containing different elements of Sentence Pattern

represented by letters.

3. Chalk and Chalk Board – This is where the players are going to write their

sample sentence depending on what type of Sentence Pattern they are able to form

in the Slide-Up-Throw platform.

Players

All students can play Slide-Up-Throw.

Mechanics

1. The game, in relation with the topic on Sentence Patterns, will encourage students

to use their knowledge in winning the game. In this, success in the application of

such knowledge will be achieved if and only if the following are well

It involves all students to be parted into two groups competing with each other.

2. The game structure consist of boxes with corresponding Element of Sentence

where in each student per group will be given the chance to throw their shoes at a

certain point of element they please. If the target is not successfully occupied by

the shoe, it is now thenext participant's turn and the cycle goes on until the group

is able to occupy elements of sentence which can form one of the Sentence

Patterns.

3. For the last part of the game, after occupying box of elements which may form a

sentence pattern, the group will be having a representative (draw lots) who will be

the one to construct a sentence formed by his groupmates on the board.
