1. PREPOSITIONS OF MOVEMENT

Prepositions of movement indicate direction in which something or someone is moving. The most
common preposition is TO

Examples:

Candace will move TO the beach house for Christmas.

David went TO the beach every day over the holidays

Dad went TO the park to play ball with the children

The puppy went TO the park for puppy training with Rachel

Other prepositions of movement add specific context to the movement

ACROSS

THROUGH

INTO

OVER

DOWN

UP

PAST

AROUND

Rule 1 – when referring to movement from one side to another, use the preposition across.

când faci referire la o mișcare care presupune traversare dintr-o parte în alta folosește ACROSS
The ball rolled across the field - Mingea s-a rostogolit dintr-o parte în alta / peste teren
Andrea is swimming across the pool
Andrea inoată peste / dintr-o parte în alta a piscinei

The dog is running across the field

Rule 2- when referring to movement from inside to outside / outside to inside, use the
prepositionTHROUGH

când facem referire la o mișcare dinăuntru - în afară sau din afară - înăuntru folosește prepoziția
THROUGH
Examples:
The car passed THROUGH the tunnel on its way to the airport
Mașina a trecut PRIN tunel în drumul spre aeroport
The ball went through the window, in the house
Mingea a trecut prin geam, în casă

Rule 3 - when referring to movement that enters or looks inside use the preposition INTO
into - în
Examples:
Jonathan went into the cave to save the dog
Jonathan a intrat în peșteră să salveze câinele
The car drove INTO the fence when the driver lost control
Mașina a intrat în gard când șoferul a pierdut controlul

Rule 4 - when referring to a specific direction of movement, use the preposition OVER , DOWN, UP,
PAST, AROUND
când faci referire la o anumită direcție folosește prepozițiile OVER - peste, DOWN - jos, UP - sus, PAST -
peste, AROUND - de jur împrejur

Examples:

The car traveled OVER the slippery road during the rain

Mașina a călătorit peste drumul alunecos în timpul ploii

He ran down the road to see the deer

a fugit în jos pe drum să vadă căprioara - indică faptul că e un drum la vale, un anumit drum
The man climb up the mountain
Omul s-a urcat pe munte
Alexandra ran past Andreea at the party
Alexandra a dat peste Andreea la petrecere
