Students prepare for ISTEP+

Students at Abbett Elementary have been preparing for
the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress
Plus (ISTEP+) assessment by competing in an academic
triathlon.
Students in third, fourth and fifth grades spent three
days competing by taking reading, writing and math
exams that included similar questions common to
ISTEP+. Teachers used the triathlon to turn preparing for
an important test into a fun exercise for students.
The purpose of the ISTEP+ program is to measure
student achievement in English and language arts, mathe-
matics, science and social studies. An applied skills
assessment and a multiple-choice assessment are used to
measure Indiana academic standards that were adopted in
November 2000 by the Indiana State Board of Education.
According to the Learn More Indiana website, solid
reading, writing and math skills are “must haves” for a
successful future. If students have not retained enough
