Quarter 3 – Module 3:
Algebraic Expression/Equation
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check you’re learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

One of the most important skills in Mathematics that we have to acquire,

is the ability to translate verbal phrases or sentences to Mathematical
expressions or equations.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. give the translation of real-life verbal expressions and equations into letters
or symbols and vice versa. (M6AL-IIIe-16)
2. define a variable in an algebraic expression and equation. (M6AL-IIIe-17)

What I Know

Direction: Which expression or word phrase is correct? Write the letter of

your answers on a sheet of paper.

Lesson Translating Real-Life Verbal
Expressions and Equations
1 into Letters or Symbols and
Vice Versa.
An Algebraic expression, or simply an expression, is any meaningful
combination of numbers, variables, and operation symbols, while an
equation is a Mathematical sentence with an equal sign (=) which shows that
two expressions on either side are equal. An important part of Algebra involves
translating word phrases into Algebraic expressions.

To write an algebraic expression. You need to:

➢ identify the unknown quantity and write a short phrase to describe it.
➢ choose a variable to represent the unknown quantity.
➢ use mathematical symbols to represent the relationship.

What’s In

Let us see if you can recall the difference between expressions and equations.

Direction: Write the word expression, if the group of words is an expression

and write the word equation if the group of words represents an equation. Do
this on a sheet of paper.

____________1. A number increased by four is twelve.

____________2. Thirty is equal to twice a number decreased by four.
____________3. Thirty taken from five times K.
____________4. Five times a number is fifty.
____________5. Seven multiplied by the sum of twelve and four.

2
What’s New

Mary and Ramon lost their jobs due to the pandemic, so they thought
of making a facemask to make a living. Mary sews twice as what Ramon sews
and the total facemask, they sew is 120 in one day. How many facemasks
does Mary sew? How many facemasks does Ramon sew?

Before we proceed to our lesson, I want to remind all of you to always wear
facemask, face shield and observe social distancing when going out.

What is It

To find the answer to the problem, you need to translate the word phrase
into Mathematical expression or equation.

Let us use variables to represent the number of facemasks. Since the total
number of facemasks, they sew in a day is given, represent the number of
facemasks each sews.

Let x be the number of facemask Ramon sew

2x be the number of facemask Mary sew, since she sews twice as Ramon
sew
So, x + 2x = 120 this is the equation.

3
To translate word phrases into Algebraic expressions, the important thing
to do is to familiarize the words and phrases associated with symbols or
operations.

Lesson Defining a Variable in an

2 Algebraic Expression and
Equation

In an Algebraic expression, any letter or symbol that represents a number

is called a variable. In this expression, a number may replace a variable. A
specific number represents a constant.

A term is a number or variable, or a product or quotient of a number and

variables raised to a specified power. The terms are separated by plus (+) or
minus (-) sign. It is not necessary to write the + sign at the beginning of a
term. The numerical factor of a term is called coefficient.

9
Terms

2x + 5
Coefficient Variable Constant

In the above expression (i.e. 2x + 5),

➢ x is a variable whose value is unknown to us which can take any value.

➢ 2 is known as the coefficient of x, as it is a constant value used with
the variable term and is well defined.
➢ 5 is the constant value term which has a definite value.
➢ 2 terms {2x, 5}

What’s In

Direction: Write an expression for the following. Write your answers on a

sheet of paper.

1. your age less three ______________________

2. your age plus nine ______________________

3. your age plus twice your age ______________________

4. thrice your age ______________________

5. your age 6 years from now ______________________

What’s New

Before we proceed, I have here some questions for you.

What should we do to be healthy especially now during this pandemic?

Do you exercise every day?

Do you eat nutritious foods like vegetables and fruits?
Do you take vitamins every day?
These questions are important in the time of National
Health Emergency.

So, children always remember that we must

strengthen our bodies and be safe at all times.

Children, what are your favorite fruits?

We have here a problem about fruits.

A basket of fruits has atis and guava. The atis are 4 times the number
of guavas. There are 20 fruits in all. How many atis? How many guavas are
there?

What Is It

To find the answer to the problem, you need to translate the phrase into
Mathematical expression or equation.

Let us use variables to represent the number of fruits. Since the total
number of fruits is given, let us represent the number of fruits.

11
Let x be the number of guava
4x be the number of atis
So, x + 4x this is the expression.

Let us study the expression:

➢ terms 2, {x, 4x}

➢ numerical coefficient 4
➢ constant term none

Another example: Twenty less than five times eight

Translate the word phrase to expression/equation

20 - 5 x 8

Algebraic expression: 5 x 8 - 20
➢ terms 2, {20, 5 x 8}
➢ variable none
➢ numerical coefficient none
➢ constant 3, {20, 5, 8}

➢ Term 1, 4{3 + w}
➢ variable w

➢ terms 2, {4x – 24, 36}
➢ variable x
➢ numerical coefficient 4
➢ constant -36

3. n minus twenty divided by two times n
