PROVIDER DIRECTORY
AND GUIDE TO SERVICES
A H I G H E R L E V E L O F C A R E .
We at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center are entering the second decade of the
21st century with a 119-year history of success and a solid vision for the future. In the last
decade, our hospital has grown and expanded as the needs of our community evolved.
Many of the technologies that were never dreamed possible at a community hospital
ten years ago are here today. While much has changed, one thing remains the same: our
commitment to provide fully integrated, collaborative primary and specialty care for our
patients while ensuring quality, safety, and satisfaction.
The Medical Center brings together advanced technology, facilities, and most importantly
– a dedicated and expert medical community – to provide exceptional health services to
the families who entrust their care to us. We believe we’re further earning that trust by
working to organize our services into systems of care.
Our sophisticated, information-rich systems coupled with medical technology form the
foundation for these systems. We also have key affiliations with local and regional partners.
With all of these components in place, we are uniquely positioned to provide faster, more
cost-effective, and accessible, patient-centered care.
As Southern New Hampshire Medical Center continues to grow, our vision for the systems
of care model will serve our patients well. The medical professionals who appear on the
following pages are the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and
counselors who make these systems work and provide our patients with the personalized
care they’ve come to expect. There are over 550 medical providers associated with The
Medical Center representing over 59 specialties. All of them are dedicated to providing a
higher level of care.
I invite you to use this book as a reference tool. In an ongoing commitment to conserve
our natural resources, The Medical Center now provides the most up-to-date version of
this directory online at www.snhmc.org. The Web-based version not only saves paper and
printing costs, but allows SNHMC to update information between printings. If you prefer

evaluations, medication, therapy, and services for patients aged four years and older. The clinical
staff includes one psychiatrist, three psychiatric nurse practitioners, and ten licensed therapists.

CANCER CARE
The integrated, patient-centered cancer program at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center
treats patients with a systems of care model, providing the very best in the prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of cancer. In 2008, The Medical Center’s Cancer Program earned a three-year
“Approval with Commendation,” an award received by only one in four hospitals nationwide.
Our close relationship with Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston provides
our patients with quick, convenient access to specialty surgeons and oncologists for specialized
care, second opinions, or clinical trials. In addition, specialists from Massachusetts General
The new Cancer Center at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center opened in 2009 with a
larger, renovated suite of treatment rooms and expanded services. The Center is home to a ded-
icated staff of board certified medical oncologists and certified oncology nurses and practitioners.
New patient services include genetic counseling, nutrition counseling, and social worker support,
as well as access to multidisciplinary clinics for those with breast cancer. Multidisciplinary clinics
allow patients to meet with their entire cancer care team – from surgeons to medical oncologists
and radiation oncologists – to discuss their treatment plan in one visit.
Radiation treatment for our patients is conveniently available at Nashua Regional Cancer
Center, the only American College of Radiology accredited facility of its kind in southern New
Hampshire. The Center was established by Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, St. Joseph
Hospital, and Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital.
A diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelming, as patients have many choices to make. Our cancer
care coordinator, a registered nurse specializing in oncology, is available to work with patients and
their families to help them make informed decisions, answer questions, coordinate appointments
and follow-ups, and connect them with support services – whether they receive some or all of
their care here in Nashua. For more information, call 603-577-3089.
CARDIAC CARE
Our cardiology medical team consists of physicians from Lahey Cardiology at The Medical
Center and New England Heart Institute, along with nurses and technologists from Southern
New Hampshire Medical Center working together to provide patients with a higher level of com-
prehensive cardiac care. In 2005, a new cardiac care unit opened with a dedicated cardiac
catheterization lab, stress testing, arrhythmia device implants, and cardiologists’ offices all in one
suite for your convenience.
New services for heart patients include outpatient nutrition counseling, as well as a Lipid Clinic,
Coumadin Clinic, CTs of the coronary arteries, and interventional services, including elective
and emergency angioplasty. Call 603-577-2039 for more information.
Catheterization Lab: In our state-of-the-art lab, doctors and technologists use sophisticated
technology to treat many heart conditions. Procedures include diagnostic cardiac catheterization,
coronary angioplasty, coronary stenting, electrophysiology studies, cardiac ablation, and cardiac
resynchronization therapy, as well as implantation of internal cardiac defibrillators and pacemakers.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Pulmonary Rehab provides patient and family support to meet day-to-
day challenges of living with lung disease. Attending rehab has been proven to reduce exacerbations
and improve quality of life. Pulmonary rehab is a medically-supervised exercise and education
program. Through individual treatment patients learn about their disease, medications, and
breathing techniques. The multidisciplinary team is led by a board certified Medical Director
and includes respiratory therapists, registered nurses, exercise physiologists, mental health
providers, and dietitians. A tobacco treatment specialist is available to counsel patients about
smoking cessation. The program at The Medical Center is nationally certified by the
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. For more information
on pulmonary rehabilitation, call 603-577-5737.
Fitness University: The Medical Center proudly sponsors this Gate City Striders running-for-fun
program for children ages 3-14, a series of fun and fit clinics. The free running clinics culminate in a
July Finals Day with running events and fun. Last year over 450 children participated in the clinics.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING
Bone Densitometry: Southern New Hampshire Health System offers DXA (dual x-ray absorp-
tiometry). DXA uses low dose x-rays of two different energies to give a very accurate measurement
of bone density at determined sites. In 2007, the hospital installed a new state-of-the-art unit
which utilizes “one pass technology,” allowing for a faster scan time and precision testing. These
exams are painless imaging procedures that measure bone mineral density to assess the risk of osteo-
porosis and monitor treatment. Studies of the spine and hip are considered the “gold standard” for
diagnosing osteoporosis and following bone density changes over time. Call 603-577-2381 for more
information or 603-577-2665 to schedule an appointment.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging: The first site to offer two fixed-unit MRI systems in Nashua
provides fast and convenient access for our patients and providers seven days a week. Breast
imaging and intervention are offered five days a week in our state of the art suite. The MRI
Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Nuclear Medicine: A dual-head nuclear camera provides higher quality imaging in less time.
State-of-the-art cardiac, bone, lung, liver, and other imaging is available around-the-clock.
PET/CT Scanning: The positron emission tomography (PET) with multi-view CT scanning is
the most advanced tool used today for diagnostic testing of the whole body and can detect early
coronary heart disease, cancer, and neurological problems. A full-body imaging procedure, the PET
scan provides multiple pictures of the body’s physiological and chemical changes. As chemical changes
often occur before structural changes, the PET/CT scan can locate a problem before it shows up in
other diagnostic tests like computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Vascular Lab: Our full-service lab provides non-invasive imaging of arterial and venous systems.
The lab operates Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm for non-emergent exams. Emergency carotid
and DVT studies are available on-call through our general Ultrasound Department. The
Vascular Lab is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Ultrasound Imaging: Our full service Ultrasound Department is accessible 24 hours a day.
Interventional procedures, including thoracentesis and paracentesis, are performed by our
board certified radiologists. The department is fully accredited by the American College of
Radiology (ACR).
Diagnostic Radiology: The Diagnostic Radiology Department is staffed 24 hours a day for general
x-ray, fluoroscopy, and interventional procedures.
Convenient walk-in services for basic x-rays are also provided Monday - Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm at:
West Campus
29 Northwest Blvd., Nashua, NH 03060, 603-577-8448 (Also open weekends 10:00am-5:00pm)
EMERGENCY SERVICES
With the completion of the Emergency Department (ED) expansion and renovation in 2006,
Emergency Services nearly doubled in size and now includes two state-of-the-art trauma rooms,
three specially-equipped critical care rooms, and 23 multifunctional exam rooms. Our Lifenet
System allows EMS personnel to transmit 12-lead EKG’s from the field to our providers in the
The Medical Center participates in the Partners TeleStroke Program with Massachusetts General
Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. As a brain scan is being completed in our
ED, Boston neurologists can download and view these scans simultaneously. Video conferencing
makes it possible for the Boston neurologist to “examine” the patient online. These instant “second
opinions” help to determine the best treatment plan for each patient.
Our patients are also ensured fast access to centers of excellence when more specialized care is
required. An on-site heliport allows us to transport patients to tertiary hospitals such as
Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital,
Shriner’s Hospital, and others when medically necessary.
Our Emergency Department participates in the State of New Hampshire Trauma System to
ensure excellence in caring for the needs of our community.
The Birth Place: In 2009, we opened a new Birth Place, designed specifically to meet the needs
of today’s families. Features include spacious private rooms with sleeping accommodations for
Dad or a guest; private showers and whirlpool tubs; as well as a small dining area. We also added
specialized operating rooms for those needing a Cesarean birth.
The Birth Place is staffed with board certified obstetricians/gynecologists, certified nurse midwives,
and registered nurses, who all work together to meet each family’s unique needs. Our on-site
Newborn Intensive Care Unit offers peace of mind for every parent and state-of-the art care for
babies who require more specialized care. View a virtual tour of the Birth Place at www.snhmc.org

Pediatrics Unit: Our specially trained nurses and staff recognize that young patients’ physical,
emotional, and developmental needs differ as they grow and that children’s needs are different
from those of adults. Our unit is designed to provide many family amenities to make your child’s
stay as homelike as possible. Our innovative systems of care approach to the planning, delivery,
and evaluation of patient and family-centered care is grounded in mutually beneficial partner-
ships among health care providers, patients, and families.

Partners, a referral may be required for insurance coverage. Quick. Convenient. Affordable. For
more information, call 603-577-CARE (2273) or visit www.immediatecareofsnh.org.
Prescription Assistance Program: The Prescription Assistance Program helps eligible uninsured
and underinsured patients to receive long-term prescription medications and some glucose
monitoring supplies from pharmaceutical companies. This program is a collaborative effort
between Southern New Hampshire Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. For more information,
visit www.snhmc.org or call 603-577-2348.
Support groups: To find support groups offered by The Medical Center and others throughout
the community, visit www.snhmc.org or call HEALTHMATCH, 603-577-CALL (2255).
Travel Medicine: Travel Medicine proudly serves northern Massachusetts and southern New
Hampshire with an office conveniently located in Merrimack, New Hampshire. For worldwide
travelers, this clinic offers education, information, and vaccinations for disease prevention. This
includes immunizations necessary for international customs requirements. Call 603-429-1271.
Volunteering: Volunteers are the heart of Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. Being a
volunteer is a wonderful way to show your capacity for caring. If you are 14 years or older, your skills
and talents can be used to help others. Call Jean Barrett, Director of Volunteers, 603-577-2959.
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) are registered nurses with additional education and medical
training in obstetrics, gynecology, and maternal and child health. They provide comprehensive
maternity care as well as “well-woman” gynecological services. Nurse midwives affiliated with
The Medical Center meet the national certification requirements of the American College of
Nurse Midwives.
Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) complete training that is equivalent to that of medical doctors
with additional training in manipulation. Osteopathic medicine is based on the theory that the
body relies on proper structure and function to operate correctly and eliminate disease or injury.
Doctors of Osteopathy emphasize the removal of internal or external abnormalities that threaten
the body’s natural systems. Their methods include manipulation, as well as physical, medicinal,
and surgical treatments.
Hospitalists are MDs, DOs, PAs, or APRNs who specialize in inpatient care. They coordinate
treatment with primary care providers and various specialists for the smoothest delivery of care
during a hospital stay.
Nurse Practitioners (DNP, NP, PNP, APRN, FNP) are nurses who, through post-graduate
education and clinical experience, provide quality care to a wide variety of patients. Those
affiliated with The Medical Center are master’s prepared, board certified in their area of special-
ization, and independently licensed. They work collaboratively with physicians and specialize in
women’s health, family practice, pediatrics, adult medicine, neonatology, behavioral health, and
anesthesia. Many serve as primary care providers.
Physician Assistants (PA-C) undergo up to six years of academic and practical training in a
program approved by the American Medical Association. Under the supervision of physicians,
they provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of minor illness or injury. Physician assis-
tants specializing in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics often serve as Primary
Care Providers.
Primary Care Providers (PCP) provide your main health care in non-emergency situations.
Most often a general practitioner, a PCP can be a physician, nurse practitioner, or a physician’s
assistant in the field of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Obstetrics/Gynecology.
Many health care plans require a referral from your PCP in order to visit a specialist.
