Detecting faults on high voltage electrical systems continues
to be a challenge. For transmission and distribution lines
isolating sources of corona discharge helps prevents unplanned
outages. Detecting tracking and arcing inside panels before
opening helps prevent sudden and deadly arc flash. Inspecting
transformers identifies partial discharges that lead to component
failures.
Ultrasonic detection is a convenient and capable technology for
inspecting all electrical systems. Arcing, Tracking, and corona all
produce distinct sounds that are easily detected in the 35-40kHz
range. Since each phenomenon has its own unique sound
quality these problems are not just detected, but identified.

SDT270 Electrical Inspector Kit - Basic

The SDT270 Electrical Inspector Kit Basic detects corona, arcing
and tracking. By measuring the amplitude of the signal, the dbµV
digital display gives inspectors a quantifiable and comparable
indication of the severity of the problem.

Electrical Inspector Kits - Basic or Pro
Sensor which is standard on all SDT270S. This sensor is useful
for scanning around electrical panels and vented covers. Use
the Flexible Sensor for added comfort and reach. The Extended
Distance Horn enhances the distance of detection. It is useful
at the beginning of an inspection to do a gross scan with the
EDS to identify any serious problems and then revert to finite
inspection with the Flexible Sensor.
For longer distances and better pinpointing the Parabolic Sensor
has no equal. Equipped with laser sighting
this sensor can isolate problem insulators
and line bushings over great distances. It’s
unique shape serves to focus and amplify
even small discharge phenomena.
SDT270 Electrical Inspector Kits also
include a Magnetic Sensor, useful for
inspecting tightly sealed cabinets. Simply
place the sensor on the panel. Ultrasound passes through the
steel medium to reveal discharge activity without having to
open the panel door.

SDT270 Electrical Inspector Kit - Pro

For those who want to detect the presence of corona, tracking,
and arcing, the Basic kit is sufficient. Inspectors trained to
Level One certification are taught to distinguish one sound
characteristic from another and conclude the type of problem
heard. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish arcing from
tracking and corona. The Pro kit adds the power of Dynamic
Parabolic Dish Reading. Dynamic Reading records a broadband ultrasound
signal to SDT270 memory. This sound recording is transferred
• Laser Sight and Cross Hair Sight to PC and analysed with UAS Dynamic Suite. Both the time and
• distances beyond 15’ and good over 100’ frequency domain are used to determine the type of electrical
fault detected.
