THE CHRISTIAN VIEW OF SUNDAY

. For the general public, Sunday is Funday,
Bumday, Snoozeday, Runday and etc; But for
Christians, Sunday is a very special day. Sunday
is the Lord’s day. Apostle John, a beloved disci-
ple of Christ, who was imprisoned and banished
to the Isle of Patmos because of his faith, wrote:
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day.” Rev.
1:10.
A DAY OF CELEBRATION
Under the Old Testament the people of Israel
refrained from all labors and observed the Sab-
bath to celebrate the finished work of Creation.
Sabbath means “to rest from labor”. It is also des-
ignates the seventh day. God created the earth
and on the seventh day he rested. The Sabbath
was in place long before the law. But with the
dispensation of the Law came strict regulations
about the Sabbath day. The observance of this
day was so important, that the sentence of death
was determined on anyone who violated the Sab-
bath day.
Under the New Testament, the people of
God refrain from all labors and observe the First
Day of the week to celebrate the finished work of
redemption. For Christ died for our sins, was
buried and rose on the first day of the week.
From the week of the resurrection, the disciples
and early Christians observed the first day of the
week as their “Sabbath”.
The fact that the first day of the week was
regarded by the apostles and first Christians as,
the Lord's day, and that it was known and kept as
such, devoted to divine worship throughout the
churches, indicates the will of God that it should
be observed in all coming ages as the Christian
Sabbath. (1Corinthians 16:2)A DAY OF WOR-
SHIP
John, the beloved apostle is seen worshipping
God on the Lord’s day. Today, it seems that we
generally do not hold any day sacred. There is
little thought given to the celebration of the fin-
ished work of redemption. Sunday is no more
special to some believers than it is to the infidel.
We cut our grass, wash our cars, play golf, go
fishing, take week-end trips, visit our relatives,
spend the day on our own pleasures forsaking the
house of God and failing in what should be our
highest priority, which is to worship our Lord in
spirit and in truth.
A DAY OF FELLOWSHIP
The apostle Paul warns us to “not forsake the
assembling of ourselves together, as the manner
of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so
much the more, as ye see the day approach-
ing”.Hebrews 10:25. Sunday is the day Chris-
tians should be found in the Lord’s house. In
Acts 20:7 we read: “And upon the first [day] of
the week, when the disciples came together to
break bread, …” In 1Corinthians 16:2 God in-
structs us through His Word that we are to bring
our gifts of benevolence and love to the church
on the first day of the week.”
A DAY OF REST
Everyone needs a day of rest, reflection and
worship. The guiding principle is found in Le-
viticus 23:3. For church age believers, Sunday is
our Sabbath of rest. Real blessings and health
and happiness comes to him who obeys the Word
of God. (Romans 14:22)
