Matter…..What is matter?

- Matter is anything that has volume has mass.

Matter has four general properties. Mass, Volume,
Density and Weight.

But . . . What is mass?

- It is the quantity of a matter an object contains.

Oh… and what about volume?

- Volume is a certain amount of area occupied by
Either an object or a being.

Then what’s density?

- Density is the mass of an object per unit of
volume.

How about weight?

- Well, that is the measure of force of attraction of

an object due to gravity.

If I’m correct then matter is made up of

molecules….then what are molecules?

- A molecule is the smallest particle of a pure

chemical substance that still retains its chemical
composition and properties. This in turn is made up of
atoms. Atoms are the tiny particles that make up
everything we know to exist. They include charged
and uncharged particles that interact with other atoms
to create matter in its various forms and states.

Matter is stated in THREE groups, namely:

1.) Solid
2.) Liquid
3.) And Gas

Arguably the fourth and fifth states of matter are

1.) Plasma
2.) And the BEC ( Bose Einstein Condensate)

Although technically, there is no present amount for

the states of matter as there could be more states of
matter that have yet to be discovered.

MATTER is made up of molecules. Which in turn are

made up of atoms which are also made up of Sub-
atomic particles. These sub-atomic particles are
electrons and protons.

MATTER has physical and chemical properties.

These properties are what define matter. Physical
changes in matter does not change it although
chemical changes develops matter into a different
substance altogether! And unlike physical changes
chemical changes are irreversible therefore if wood is
burnt and has turned to ash, it cannot become wood
again.

Solid - It is a state of matter which has a certain size

and shape. Solid is easily changed from one physical
form to another. The atoms in a solid phased matter
are tightly bound together.

Liquid – It is a state of matter which has no certain

shape but has certain size. It takes up space but it
takes the shape of its container. Its molecules are not
so tightly bound which doesn’t give it a certain shape.

Gas - It doesn’t have both certain shape and size. Not

only does it take the shape of the container but it also
fills up or occupies the whole container.

Plasma – are ionized gasses which may exist at

several thousand degrees Celsius. Like gas it doesn’t
have a certain shape and size although unlike it
plasma can self-generate magnetic fields and electric
currents and respond strongly to electromagnetic
forces. As gases are heated, electrons tend to leave
the atoms resulting into free electrons which are not
bound into molecules or atoms

BEC (Bose Einstein Condensate) - is a state of matter

which is easily described as a dilute gas of weakly
interacting bosons confined in an external potential
and cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero.

All of these states of matter, except solid, are called

fluids. A fluid is something that can easily move and
change shape.
