Students need to know how to read and write effectively to prosper in school. It is the

teachers¶ job to give students the techniques and skills they need to read and write effectively.

This standard strives to ensure that all teachers are modeling and providing opportunities for

students to reach their potential in reading and writing. Not only are the tools necessary for

reading and writing but for listening and speaking as well because the four go hand in hand.

Students need reminders and instruction on how to be effective listeners, speakers, readers and

writers.

    


       


  

The artifact is a first grade reading group lesson plan, which clearly points out to students

how they should behave while in a reading group. To be successful in a small reading group,

every student needs to be disciplined in their behavior and actions. Sitting up straight, following

along, and so on, ensure that the students are paying attention and are serious about reading. If a

student is going to be an effective reader they need to be demonstrating these good habits. It

may seem very simple or picky, but if the students don¶t have these tools their reading will lack

as well as their writing, listening and speaking skills.

The lesson was taught in my classroom and the technique of constant reminding has

worked wonders. The students pay more attention and are ready for anything if their body

language is correct. My teaching will be impacted in the future because of the differences I have

seen with the students in this area. If they are sitting up, not slouching or leaning I know they are

paying attention and retaining all of the information they need. It also forces them to be better

listeners because they have their attention on the speaker.

Diverse learners need different things to help them succeed in the classroom while

advancing to the same goal. This is the same with teaching students to read and write. Each

student is going to need something extra or different from someone else, but they are all trying to

get to the ultimate goal. Body posture is a technique or skill for reading, writing, speaking and

listening that every student needs to reach that goal. Although a lot of students will need extra or

less enforcement on body posture, each student needs some form of it to succeed. To teach in a

diverse society you need to be prepared to differentiate your instruction and tools for each

student, just like in reading groups.
