5.0 LATERAL LOADS & VERTICAL LOAD DUE TO EARTH PRESSURE AND SURCHARGE

To Calculate the Earth Pressure The height above Ground Level Should be considered
as the foundation is resting upon Rock

Let us Assume
φ = 30
δ = 20
c = 0
α = 90 Fh2 HT = 2.30
β = 0 Fh1 Fh1
Sin2(α + φ) = 0.75
Sin(α - δ ) = 0.93969 HT/2 0.42xHT 0.42xHT
Sin( φ + δ ) = 0.76604
Sin (φ - β) = 0.5
Sin( α - δ ) = 0.93969
Sin (α - β ) = 1.0 Earth Pressure (P1)
2
Sin (α) = 1.0 Live LoadSurcharge (P2)

From Coulumb's Earth Pressure Theory

Ka = Sin2(α + φ)
Sin2(α) X Sin (α - δ) Sin( φ + δ ) X Sin ( φ - β ) 2
1 + Sin( α - δ ) X Sin (α - β )

= 0.75
0.766 x 0.5 2
1 x 0.9397 1+ 0.9397 x 1

= 0.75
0.93969 x 2.6845
= 0.29731 For Stability

i) ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE

P1 = Ka x γ x HT x Cosδ
= 0.297 x 1.8 x 2.30 x 0.9397
= 1.15665
Fh1 = (1/2) x P1 x HT x 7.5
= 9.97609 T
2
Fv1 = (1/2) x Ka x γ x HT x Sinδ x7.5
= 3.631 T

Overturning Moment due to Earth Pressure Force ( Fh1)in Horizontal Direction

= 9.97609 x 2.166
= 21.6082 T.m
Stabilizing Moment Due To Vertical Component(Fv1) Of Active Earth Pressure
= 3.631 x 2.15
= 7.80665 T.m
ii) SURCHARGE DUE TO LIVE LOAD
P2 = Ka x γ x Heb
= 0.6422
Fh2 = P2 x HT x 7.5 x Cosδ
= 10.4098 T
Fv2 = P2 x HT x 7.5 x Sinδ
= 3.78887 T
Overturning Moment due to Surcharge Force ( Fh2)in Horizontal Direction
= 10.4098 x 2.35
= 24.4631 T.m
Stabilizing Moment Due To Vertical Component(Fv2) Of Live Load Surcharge Pressure
= 3.78887 x 2.15
= 8.14607 T.m
6.0 DEAD & LIVE LOAD MOMENTS AND BRAKING MOMENT CALCULATIONS
1) Dead Load of Superstructure
Span Length = 2.0 m
Slab Thickness = 0.25 m
Width of Slab = 7.5
So the weight of Slab = 2.0 X 0.25 x 7.5 X 2.4
= 9T
Hence Load Per Unit Abutment
= 4.5 T
Assuming Superimposed Load as 3.0 T/m
= 3.0 x 2.0
= 6 T
Hence Load Per Unit Abutment
= 3T
So Total Dead Load = 4.5 + 3
= 7.5 T
Lever Arm = 1.25
Moment = 9.375 T.m
2) LIVE LOAD :
Class AA Track Vehicle
Total Load = 70.0 T
Length of Track = 3.6 m
As the Span Length is less than 3.6m , the live load to be placed should be
= (70/ 3.6) x 2.0
= 38.889 T

38.889 T

0.2 1.6 0.2

R1 R2

Now R1 = 38.89/ 2
= 19.444 T
Lever Arm = 1.25 m
Moment = 24.306 T.m
Now Breaking Force = 7.7778
Per Abutment = 3.8889 T
µRg = 3.75 T
Moment due to µRg = 13.13
Hence the Governing Horizontal Force is = 3.89 T
40Tonne Boggie Vehicle
Total Load = 40.0 T
Distance between loads = 1.2 m

20T 20T
1.22

0.2 1.6 0.2

R1 R2

Here R1 = 29.75 T
Lever Arm = 1.25 m
Moment = 37.188 T.m
Now Breaking Force = 8 T
Per Abutment = 4 T
µRg = 3.75 T
Hence the Governing Horizontal Force (gv) = 4T
Moment due to force gv = 14 T.m
