c Freon-12 is an environmentally harmful chemical that has been used in cooling systems in a variety of

devices from 9 to refrigerators. Science has developed a number of chemicals that perform
cooling and heat sinking functions in a similar capacity as freon-12 without its harmful effects on the
Ozone and the rest of the environment.

c According to the website for the Environmental Protection Agency several compounds are approved
for replacing freon-12 as a cooling agent in 9 air conditioners. Carbon dioxide at 100ppm may
replace freon-12 and is readily available from multiple manufacturers of cooling agent parts. Other
approved compounds include FRIGC, manufactured by Intercool Distribution. FRIGC is composed of
HCFC-124 at 39ppm, HFC-134a at 59ppm and butane at 2ppm. Another substitute, Hot Shot/Kar Kool, is
manufactured by ICOR and is composed of HCFC-22 at 50ppm, HCFC-124 at 39ppm, HCFC-142b at
9.5ppm and isobutane at 1.5ppm.
Ô
c Many chemicals that may be used to replace freon-12 require a retrofit of an existing household
refrigeration unit or may only be purchased in new machines that no longer use the harmful CFC. R-
406A which is made from 41 percent difluoroethane, 51 percent chlorodifluoromethane and 4 percent
isobutane is a chemical compound that is used to replace freon-12 in retrofit circumstances only and
may not be purchased in new machines. Conversely, HFC-152a may only be used as a substitute for
freon-12 in new machines because it's highly flammable and may damage systems not specifically
designed to handle it.

c Water coolers, ice vending machines and other commercial devices can be retrofitted to handle
compounds that eliminate the use of freon-12. According to the EPA, Forane 409A, which is a blend of R-
22, R-124 and R-142b can be used to eliminate freon-12 from existing commercial cooling systems,
water coolers and refrigeration units like those used on food service trucks. Non-mechanical heat
transfer systems may also use carbon dioxide, mineral oil or galden fluids at 100ppm to eliminate the
need for freon-12 in the system.
Ôefrigerant- refrigerating; cooling.reducing bodily heat or fever.
a refrigerant agent, as a drug.a liquid capable of vaporizing at a low temperature, asammonia, used in m
echanical refrigeration.a cooling substance, as ice or solid carbon dioxide, used in arefrigerator.
a amples of anvironmentally Friendly Chemicals
Microfibre technology- these products do not require any chemicals and several brands are now available in department stores.
Citrus-based cleaners.
Vinegar removes mildew, stains, and wax build-up.‰se it to clean coffee pots, glass, paintbrushes, grout, windows and
fireplaces.
Pure soap cleans everything from dishes to cars and can be used as a shampoo.
Baking soda, especially when combined as a paste with white vinegar, is the all-around champion: it cleans, deodorizes, scours,
polishes, removes stains, and softens fabrics.‰se it on plastic, vinyl, carpeting, and upholstery, on silver and stainless steel,
inside refrigerators or down drains.
Borax cleans wallpaper, painted walls, and floors. It deodorizes, removes stains and boosts the cleaning power of your
detergents.
Washing soda cleans clothing and softens water but it is moderately toxic.Wear gloves and use it in well-ventilated areas to
avoid irritation of mucous membranes.
Ammonia is a hard working liquid that cleans carpets and linoleum, copper and enamel and most appliances.Ammonia can
irritate the skin and the eyes, so be sure to wear gloves and use it in a well-ventilated area.Never mix it with chlorine bleach:
the mixture creates a poisonous gas.
