The Client

Our client is a security solutions provider to the top government agencies in

India and across the globe. They had an encryption tool that was compatible
across the Windows 98 and Windows XP platform. But with Microsoft
launching the Vista version and enterprises upgrading their operating
systems to Vista, our client faced the compatibility roadblock. They were
privy to Radix’s expertise with device driver migration and approached us
with their requirement.

Requirements & Challenges

Since our client was supplying security solutions to the top government
agencies of India and other countries it was imperative that their encryption
tool be highly reliable, accurate, and flexible enough to cater to different
operating systems. Their solution output should match their customer’s
expectations to be effective. Now since most of their global customers were
upgrading their systems to Windows Vista they had to upgrade their
encryption tool to be compatible across this platform. But this was merely
the broad set of requirements. There were a few challenges that
accompanied these requirements which were as follows:

 Fundamentally, we had to migrate the client solution to the 64 bit

system.
 This migration had to be done within a strict timeline and precise
budgetary constraints.
 The client had proposed the lead time of 3 to 4 man months.
 There was a lack of any system documentation.
 All the transactions and communications had to be kept highly
confidential and secret.
 The internal team working on the project had to be kept unaware of
the business implications of the tool.

Radix Approach

With all the secrecy and confidentiality surrounding the project, it was clear
that we had to adopt a very calculated approach and be careful in whatever
we do. Thus, we started out by setting up a team of highly experienced and
trained professionals to look into the matter. They analyzed the
requirements first and mapped out the solution functionalities. Based on this
analysis, they drew out a detailed plan of every single phase of the
migration process. Senior resources were allocated for every phase and only
the necessary information was passed onto them to enable them to carry
out the migration process. The business implications of the solution were not
disclosed to the resources as demanded by the client.

Project Security & Communication

Since our client had concerns about the quality of our migration processes
and the confidentiality of his project details, we invited him to visit us at our
premises. We gave him a guided tour of our IT infrastructure, discussed our
business processes with him, and disclosed our security measures. We
showed him that:

 Radix adopts BS 7799 equivalent standards for security of information

management systems.
 We have cameras and monitoring systems installed at all the crucial
places in our premises.
 Our server room can be accessed only via secure RFID identifier.
 Only our top management and primary system administrator can
access the server room.
 We do not allow usage of mobile phones and memory devices in our
premises.

We further invited the client to personally meet the team members

working on his project to validate their skills and expertise. As for the
communication protocols we shared with him that:

 We use private and secure FTP connections for files transfer.

 We practice secure email exchange.

 We maintain a single point of contact.

 All the communications and information exchanges are closely

monitored to avoid security breach.

The End Result

 First and foremost we were able to satisfy the client’s apprehensions

about security measures and communication channels.
 The client was further elated with our approach, consistency in flexible
pricing, and commitment standards.
 We were able to deliver 45% cost savings to the client as against the
original estimate which was based on our understanding due to lack of
real-time data.
 There were no more than 3 instances of bugs or issues reported.
 The solution required a beta test run of less than a week before being
declared stable.
 The client was able to deploy this newer version immediately on
Windows Vista and XP 64 bit systems.
 The on-time upgradation and launch of this new version enhanced our
client’s reputation in the market.
 The project was executed and implemented by a team of 3 resources,
none of whom till date are aware about the project’s business
implications.

The Wrap Up

This project was very different for the Radix team. While on one hand we
had to prove our skills and expertise with application migration, on the other
we had to prove to the client that we had the necessary security measures
in place. The client was highly concerned about the secrecy and
confidentiality of his solution specifications being maintained. But the Radix
team was fully confident on all fronts and successfully assuaged all the client
apprehensions. With all said and done, we were able to notch up one more
name in our impressive list of successful project deliveries.
