In order to design a fitting room I had
to immerse myself in all the different
types and designs of fitting rooms. I
researched a variety of shops high
street shops to find out what works and
what did not. These are my findings,
broken down into 5 questions.

Location, Location, Location

Is the location of the fitting room obvi-
ous, or does the customer need to ask
someone for assistance?

a. large lighted sign to indicate loca-

tion (Desigual)
b. several medium sized signs through-
out the store (H&M)
c. small clever quotes “Like it? See if it
fits here.” (Cos)

a b c
Take a Load Off
Is there additional seating provided or
do you stand while waiting?

a. small chaise lounge (Ted Baker)

b. stools and beanbags (Desigual)
c. no seating (H&M)

a b c
Closure/Security/Exposure
How does the fitting room close? If
provided does the door lock? Once
inside how exposed with the customer
be to the outside?

a. large lighted sign to indicate loca-

tion (Desigual)
b. deadbolt lock (Calvin Klein)
c. curtains (Ted Baker)

a b c
Permanent Fixture
Are the number of hooks, rails, hang-
ers and shelves provided sufficient? Is
there enough room between fixtures to
hang clothes without overcrowding?

a. single railing provided (Ted Baker)

b. railing and hooks provided (Calvin
Klein)
c. very small hooks (Desigual)

a b c
Viewing Party
What is the distance between the cus-
tomer and the mirror? Are the mirrors
stationary? Are there enough mirrors to
view clothes from all angles?

a. mirror placed at awkward angle (Ted

Baker)
b. three mirrors provided (Calvin Klein)
c. mirrors that can pivot (Calvin Klein)

In order to create a design for the
changing room, I started by explor-
ing The Conran Shop. Who are
they? What do they stand for?

iconic adj. of, relating to, or having the

character of an icon; having a conven-
tional formulaic style

playful adj. full of fun and high spirits:

frolicsome humorous; jesting
timeless adj. independent of time;
eternal; unaffected by time; ageless

thoughtful adj. exhibiting or charac-

terized by careful thought; having or
showing heed for the well-being or
happiness of others and the propensity
for anticipating their needs or wishes

exploration
I started by looking at a variety of con-
cepts to see which would best encom-
pass the conran brand values and
present a realistic option for a chang-
ing room.

concept a: I drew inspiration from the

classic red phone booth which can be
seen all over England. Taking the cur-
vature and translating that into a form
which allows for changing and also
provides an interesting form.

concept b: I looked to the most recent

expansions of The Conran Shop in
Toyko for my second concept. Pulling
from the style and movement of the tra-
ditional shoji screens, which slide and
slot together.

I decided to further develop concept b. I
designed a changing room based on the
idea of it being entirely able to slot to-
gether, through a series of junctions.

Because of the complexity of the
design, I opted to have my model
professionally laser cut. I started
by developing specific 1:20 scale
AutoCAD drawings to do this and
then worked closely with my select-
ed contractor to make sure that my
drawings were accurate and would
translate my ideas.

I created a stop motion video to

show how easy it is to put the mod-
el together. The concept is ideal
because it will allow for the chang-
ing room to act as a pop-up shop,
because it can be dismantled eas-
ily. This would also make it possi-
ble for The Conran Shop to explore
expansion possibilities.

material world

The beauty of this concept is that it is

simple. The materials keep within this
theme and the structure can be made
using plywood. Additional materials
such as rubber flooring, chrome and
mirror complete the look of this de-
sign.

a. dalsouple ‘vert pomme’ rubber

flooring

b. plywood

c. dalsouple ‘celadon’ rubber flooring

d. chrome/ mirror
