When comparing the procedures for assembling a photo array lineup with those of

an in-person lineup. For the photo assembly you compile a series of photos array
lineup through the computer, a series of photos are available for viewing. And the
eyewitness to the crime can give a description since the police do not have an
arrestee. The photo array allow law enforcement to take the pertaining information
of the to match them against their data base system to obtain likely possibilities and
characteristics of the individual, in order to eliminates wasted time in an eyewitness
viewing.

What are the similarities and differences? For what purpose would you use each
one?

When there is an eyewitness to a crime, and the police haven't yet obtained a suspect, the
photo array allows law enforcement to take the main points of the crime and match them
against the database of known felons to produce likely possibilities. This eliminates
wasted time in an eyewitness viewing random suspects who are unlikely to have
committed that type of crime. Although jurisdictions vary, typically an eyewitness is
shown a minimum of six suspects, who have committed similar crimes, at a time. This
allows investigators to eliminate possibilities at a rapid rate. The disadvantage is that,
while there are attempts at keeping information fresh, the photos may not be current and
aspects of a suspect’s appearance may have changed over time.

Lineups:

With the photo lineup you have to minimize the chance for misidentification.

You would need to make sure there is a decent amount of photos for viewing. You would
want an unbiased opinion so the officer should not offer his or her opinion. There should
also be only one witness at a time. Photos should also be presented in a neutral form and
should not be referred to as mug shots. This type of identification should be used when a
in-person lineup is not feasible.

An in-person lineup is the preferred eyewitness identification. It should be conducted as

soon as possible after the apprehension of a suspects because the shorter the time span the
better the chance that the eye witness can identify him or her. Also with the shorter time
frame if the person that is apprehended is innocent they can be set free. Procedure for the
line up should be contacting all eyewitness as soon as possible, obtaining non suspect
participants and arranging for an attorney to present if necessary.
In the lineup you would want to make sure that your participants look similar in the line
up. The participants should be cautioned to behave similarly and avoid behavior that
would set them apart from the suspect. As in the photo line up, officials should not offer
any suggestions. With the line up the procedure needs to be recorded.
