The Maffra Fire Brigade will
be hosting the 79th Annual Eastern
Districts Competition to be held on
the 29th and 30th January 2011.
The Competition will open with a
Discipline contest which will be
conducted at the Maffra Recreation
Reserve from 9:30am. The discipline
contest will begin with an inspection in
full brigade uniform before an official
march will be performed on the oval.
This will
be conducted with CFA,
Government and Local dignitaries
in attendance. Competition will then
commence over two days at the
Boisdale Street Running Track. With
18 events in total the highlights of the
competition to watch will include the
Hydrant Race, Ladder Race, Marshall,
Pumper and Reel events.
The Saturday evening will feature a
Torchlight procession, where a march
will be conducted through the streets
of Maffra and will conclude down
Street. Fire fighters with march in
uniform with lit torches – a spectacular
sight which should not be missed. Fire
fighters will march to music provided by
three marching bands from local and
metropolitan areas. The procession
will begin at 9:00pm sharp.
All events will be keenly contested for
points resulting in a Champion Brigade
being awarded the grand aggregate
at the completion of competition.
Spectators are welcome at no cost.

What is now the Location of the
Maffra township was in the 1840s the
site of the Green Hill Native Police
Station. Following its closure a small
settlement developed at this spot on
the Macalister River in the 1860s
when a punt was built to enable
travellers to get to the gold fields to
the North. By the 1880s, with the
development of grazing all around,
the town grew and became home to
the largest beef cattle sale yards in
Rural Victoria . A sugar beet industry
was started in 1896 and operated
until after the Second World War,
by which time dairying had become
far more mechanized and was thus
more economically viable.

The most asked questions.
1. What age alpaca should I get?
Alpacas are weaned at, between 4 and 8 months,
depending on how well the cria and the dam is doing
and seasonal conditions. We prefer the crias to be 6
months old before leaving the place. At this age they
have had their vaccinations and we can see that they
are growing well.
The age of the alpaca is also governed by the new
owners situation and experience with animals.
For instance – We placed two alpacas as grass
eaters on small acreage bordering a town boundary,
just before Xmas. These wethered males were
between 12 and 18 months old and were wanted as
grass eaters. Being older meant that they were more
independent, would stand up to a stray dog and not
stress.
Another two that were placed in a similar situation were
for a family with young children and they wanted to
eventually be able to handle and lead these animals.
They had had minimal experience with livestock

Sipadan was officially declared a Marine Pro-
tected Area on the 1 January 2005. To protect Rob & Evelyn Timmers
the reef and its marine life, there is no longer

each day is restricted to protect this valuable
eco system. The SEAL group stayed nearby
at Borneo divers on the island of Mabul and
travelled to Sipadan on each of the days they
were granted permits.
Tour leader Rob Timmers, a very seasoned trip

tor found the diving world class. “The green
and hawksbill turtles came within centimetres
of the diver’s underwater camera lens, making
for some spectacular photography. The super
visibility and deep oceanic drop offs combined
with the prolific fish life made it a memorable
experience for all.”

It’s Holiday Time!!
What, you didn’t get the memo. So now suddenly you
have all the time in the world to do what ever, the kids
are on your back, and the in-laws want to come over.
What do you do?
Head out camping of course. Here’s a little check list
for you and the family to do before you head out into
the great outdoors.
The Tent! Don’t just pull it out of its hiding hole where
it’s been sitting in for the last 12 months or since you
last went camping and throw it in the car. Pull it out,
set it up, check it over. If you didn’t dry it properly you
may find you made a good worm farm and are minus
one tent. It will also remind you if you forgot to get that
pole fixed or need a refill on your pegs.
Find something to sleep on over night. An air bed is a
very comfy and a cheap way to go, but as we all know
can be a bit unreliable at time. Self inflating mats are
a great alternative but do come with a price tag, but
in my opinion well worth the money. Another way is
to use stretcher beds. These are good for separating
you from the ground but come with the cost of space
in the tent.
Check your chairs and make sure you all have one,
or at least the adults do, and make sure they’re all in
proper working order and still comfy. This time of the
year is a great time to maybe upgrade or buy more
chairs for the family.
Find all the Sleeping bags that are tucked away in the
cupboard and maybe give them an air out. If you can’t
remember the last time you did that then it’s time to let
them out. Down filled sleeping bags need to be kept
uncompressed so the down remains undamaged. So
if you rammed your sleeping bag into a tiny little bag,
it might be time to replace the it. If your unsure, the
test is if it fluffs up when you lay it out, it’s still good; if
it doesn’t, it’s lost a lot of warmth.
Pull out the gas stove and give it a whirl. Just remember
to check the hose before you put a flame near the
place. Nothing puts a dark cloud over a holiday like
a few days in hospital with third degree burns. If the
stove/BBQ isn’t working it might be time to clean or
replace the jets or replace all the o-rings, ask you
local plumber or camping store for advice on how to
do this.
Find a torch for everyone in the family to use. This
way you don’t get asked when your trying to sleep
if someone can borrow your torch. Head torch’s are
also a good idea as it not only frees your hands and
mouth from holding the torch but it lets
you eat without needing a big light to
light up an area.
The faithful gas lantern is always a
great idea to light up large areas for
general use by all. It doesn’t replace
the feel of a camp fire but is easier
to move around when you need to.
But do remember should there be fire
restrictions the gas light may not be
the best idea.
The trusty table. Sometimes the
hardest thing to find tucked away
down the back behind the freezer, but can be the
handiest thing to have. Prepare the food on it, eat on
it, put a small light on top to light up the area, or even
just a place to put things so they don’t get dirty on the
ground. And don’t forget to pack a few games or a
deck of cards.
The pots and pans are something that can be
overlooked and easily forgotten. Don’t forget to bring
all the things to clean up as well, nothing worse than
the smell of burnt snags filling the car on the drive
home.
The last thing that is a must have for any type of
camping is the TARP! Not only is it a great floor mat,
an excellent shelter from the wind and rain, but it
works great as a reflective sheet to dry clothes and
keep you warm. It can also become a fly for a tent
should the original one fail for some reason.
There are still many things that you need to bring but
these are a few of the major one to remember.
Hopefully this helps when it comes to avoiding the
relo’s these holidays and getting out into the great
outdoors.

Bruthen Inn Hotel that is the best in its class. Bruthen sure loves its blues music and
they know how to put on a good show. Bruthen deserves its title as the “Victoria’s
Premier Blues Town”.

The Festival Background:

The Bruthen Blues and Arts Festival is an annual, community-run weekend
celebration of music and arts. Evolving originally from a weekly local music ‘jam’, it
quickly became renowned as Australia’s Biggest Little Blues Festival - staged on the
third weekend of each February since 1996.

The main ‘blues’ music events of the festival take place on a street stage under
the elms in the beautiful main street, at the local hall, and at the Bruthen Inn Hotel,
which has a wonderful semi-outdoor venue overlooking the Tambo River. Most of
Australia’s best known blues performers, as well as many emerging artists, have
been featured at the festival over the years.

In 2004, a newly formed festival planning committee (a sub-committee of the Arts

& Events Council Inc) undertook a facilitated strategic planning process to generate
a common, focused direction for the event and the group. From this came a unified
clarity around a new vision and objectives, and a change in the title of the event
(from Bruthen Blues Bash to the current title). We have begun to include a broader
variety of music in the program, and we made a commitment to include arts and
culture activities in the festival program. We ultimately aim to increase community
participation and ownership of the festival.

The East Gippsland Shire has also recognised the success of this festival; awarding
it the event of the year award at the 2004 Australia Day Celebrations. The Bruthen
Arts & Events Council are committed to continue staging a successful community
celebration, which pleases our music enthusiasts, and provides our local and visiting
community with access to exciting arts and culture activities. This festival will continue
to showcase our beautiful township and our creative, cohesive community.

SALE CUP WAS SYMMETRY IN MOTION
The 2010 Gold 1242 Sale Cup has
been run and won by Lara trained
greyhound Symmetry. Owned by
one of Australia’s most successful
breeders in Helen Ivers and trained
by Robert Britton, Symmetry broke
through for a well deserved Group 1
victory. Symmetry was ideally placed
over the 650 metre journey of the
Sale Cup having been competitive at
the very top level in both sprint and
distance racing, the most recent effort
being runner up to Sale Champion, El
Grand Senor, in the Melbourne Cup.
In the Cup Final, before a large and
very enthusiastic crowd, Symmetry
was slow away but was able to
muster great pace to sit behind the
pacemaker Sitka after 90 metres.
From there it was a matter of
Symmetry explosive mid race speed
taking him to a 3 length lead with 200
to go. Sitka battled on courageously
to reduce the margin back to a neck
on the line. The race time of 37.09
has only been bettered by track
record holder Mantra Lad in the
2009 Cup. The promising young
stayer Bobby Boucheau, who had
set the time standards in the lead up
to the Cup series, was an unlucky

for the best performed greyhounds

Grand Senor, resumed from a short
let up and was able to overcome a
tardy beginning before racing away
to a hollow victory in the fast time
of 24.66 seconds. This was his 6th
victory at Sale from 7 starts with the
meeting on Tuesday night 25th
January – Australia Day eve.
While the racing on the track is
certain to excite with some of the best
sprinters, short coursers, stayers and
youngsters in the land on show the
action off the track is there to enjoy as
well.
The Friday night meeting will have
a pup auctioned off with anyone on
course able to bid on this well bred

dog lacks nothing in pedigree and is
sure to attract keen interest from
