Bruthen is a small country town overlooking the Tambo river and surrounded by
native flora and fauna. Situated 300kms east of Melbourne on the Omeo Highway/
Great Alpine Road, Bruthen boasts natural attractions such as clean, freshwater
waterholes for a refreshing swim and a rainforest on the outskirts of town so
pristine it’s hard to believe. Bruthen is central to all sports and recreational activities
which include: fishing, snow & water skiing, surfing, boating, bushwalking and 4
wheeldriving, all within a short distance in any direction.

With a population of around 640, the town itself offers good old-fashioned country
style hospitality. Service station attendants still fill your tank up for you while you sit
in the car! You will be able to experience home style cooking and stay over in pub
style accommodation or else in one of the b & b’s to experience the tranquility of
country living.

For one weekend every February the sleepy town of Bruthen wakes up to the sound
of house rockin’ rhythm and blues at the Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival. The Festival
is now in its fouteenth year and still going strong. The town puts on a showcase
of stalls, music in the street, workshops, garage sales and of course music at the
Bruthen Inn Hotel that is the best in its class. Bruthen sure loves its blues music and
they know how to put on a good show. Bruthen deserves its title as the “Victoria’s
Premier Blues Town”.

The Festival Background:

The Bruthen Blues and Arts Festival is an annual, community-run weekend
celebration of music and arts. Evolving originally from a weekly local music ‘jam’, it
quickly became renowned as Australia’s Biggest Little Blues Festival - staged on the
third weekend of each February since 1996.

The main ‘blues’ music events of the festival take place on a street stage under
the elms in the beautiful main street, at the local hall, and at the Bruthen Inn Hotel,
which has a wonderful semi-outdoor venue overlooking the Tambo River. Most of
Australia’s best known blues performers, as well as many emerging artists, have
been featured at the festival over the years.

In 2004, a newly formed festival planning committee (a sub-committee of the Arts

& Events Council Inc) undertook a facilitated strategic planning process to generate
a common, focused direction for the event and the group. From this came a unified
clarity around a new vision and objectives, and a change in the title of the event
(from Bruthen Blues Bash to the current title). We have begun to include a broader
variety of music in the program, and we made a commitment to include arts and
culture activities in the festival program. We ultimately aim to increase community
participation and ownership of the festival.

The East Gippsland Shire has also recognised the success of this festival; awarding
it the event of the year award at the 2004 Australia Day Celebrations. The Bruthen
Arts & Events Council are committed to continue staging a successful community
celebration, which pleases our music enthusiasts, and provides our local and visiting
community with access to exciting arts and culture activities. This festival will continue
to showcase our beautiful township and our creative, cohesive community.

Hi Readers.

Happy New Year

May it be a good one for all of us.

We have many features planned this com-

ing year, bringing you all lots of infor-
mation about upcoming events we can
all go to. We have that much going on
in Gippsland, we really should never be
bored, and thanks to the tireless hours alot
of volunteers put into these events, our
community spirit will keep strong.

Our hearts go out to the recent flood

victims in Queensland. When a catastro-
phe this big hits our fellow Australians, it
puts the small problems we face daily into
perspective doesn’t it?

Now that you have taken care of your doors, it’s
time to examine the windows you have installed in
