Introduction
TweetTwain is a desktop tool to monitor and manage multiple Twitter accounts. You can fully
automate your Twitter accounts to keep them alive, attract more followers, promote your
products and measure your performance on social media platforms such as Twitter.
Downloading and Installing TweetTwain
TweetTwain is developed in Sun Java (http://www.java.com) and will work in all operating
systems.

To download/upgrade Java please visit http://www.java.com/

Pre-requisite: Java 1.6 or 6.0

Tip: To know whether Java is already installed in your system or to know the version of Java,
go to your console (command window) and type java –version

Once you have Java installed, go to the below URL and click on the ‘Launch’ button.

You may receive a security warning as shown below.

Check 'Always trust content from this publisher' and click on Run to proceed with the
installation.

The installation wizard will download all the required files from the server and configure
TweetTwain on your machine. Once the installation is complete, a desktop icon and a new
menu item will appear on your desktop.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Java Web Start?
Java Web Start is a framework developed by Sun Microsystems that allows users to start
application software for the Java Platform directly from the Internet using a web browser.
Updates of the software download from the Web become available when the user has a
connection to the Internet, thus easing the burden of deployment.

2. My browser is not launching the application


TweetTwain is distributed as Java Web Start and some browsers like Google Chrome
downloads the JNLP file instead of launching the program. Double-click on the downloaded
(tweettwain.jnlp) file to launch the installer.

3. I am not able to run the application


Please make sure you have Java 1.6(or 6.0) installed in your computer.

4. I am getting a security warning while launching the application


You can ignore the warning as TweetTwain is distributed with a self-signed certificate.

5. How do I un-install TweetTwain


You can un-install TweetTwain using your OS default un-installation method (for Windows, go
to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> TweetTwain and click on Un-install)

6. How can I upgrade to the latest version of TweetTwain?


All updates will be automatically delivered to your computer on restart of TweetTwain.
Launching TweetTwain

You can launch TweetTwain by double-clicking the desktop shortcut or by locating the
TweetTwain menu. Your initial screen will look like this:

Setting up TweetTwain is explained in the below sections.


Upgrading to TweetTwain Pro

Go to Settings->Upgrade to TweetTwain Pro and click on “Buy Now” button. Make payment
via PayPal and you will receive your registration details in 24 hours. Enter your registration
details which you received from us and click on Upgrade.

On successful completion of the above steps, you will receive a success message as shown
below.

Make sure you restart TweetTwain to enable all hidden features.


Setting up API keys

This is an option feature, if you do not want to set-up your own API key, you can skip to the
next section.

TweetTwain uses the following API services to load and publish contents:

1. Twitter – social networking service


2. Facebook – social networking service
3. Bit.ly – URL shortening service

Tip: We recommend you to use your own API key so that you can avoid conflicts when there
are changes to the API keys or the service provider suspends API keys because of violating
their terms and conditions.

For other services, visit their own website to create API keys.
Adding Twitter Accounts

You can add unlimited number of Twitter accounts to TweetTwain. Each Twitter account will
be associated with a Twitter API key. So, if you have any plan to change your API key, do it
before adding Twitter accounts.

Go to Settings->Manage Twitter Accounts and click on Add Account. A popup window appears
asking your Twitter screen name as shown below:

Enter your screen name and click on Add. Read the instructions carefully and click on OK.

A browser Window appears with Twitter website. Log in using your screen name or email
address and allow access to TweetTwain by clicking Allow button:
A one-time PIN will be displayed on the screen as shown below:

Copy and paste the PIN in the TweetTwain pop-up.


Make sure there are no extra spaces while copying the PIN. Click on OK, on successful
completion of the above steps you will receive a message as below:

Your new account will be listed in the accounts list.


Mapping Facebook Accounts

You can map your Facebook account to your Twitter account. All contents published to your
Twitter account will be published to your mapped Facebook account.

Go to Settings->Manage Facebook Accounts and click on Map Facebook Account

Enter your Facebook account name, select your Twitter account to which this account needs
to be mapped and click on Add button.

You can enter your Facebook page id if you want to publish to your page instead of your
profile page.

Your Facebook app page will be displayed with the below content asking your permission to
access your profile details. Click on Allow.
Now you can come back to TweetTwain and click on the OK button.

You may get another page with the below content, click on Allow Publishing.

On successful completion of the above steps you will get a success message as shown below:
Composing and Publishing your First Tweet

Go to File->New Tweet or click on the New Tweet button on the toolbar to launch the Tweet
window.

You can directly upload images to yfrog, a free image hosting service. To upload an image,
click on Browse and select your file. Select your accounts to which the message needs to be
published. Click on Upload to upload your file to yfrog. A URL will appear on the message
window once the upload completes.

Enter your message in the text area provided. If you have long URLs in your message, shorten
those by clicking the ‘Shorten Url’ button. Once you are done with the message, click on
Preview button. Click on the Publish button to ‘Publish’ it to Twitter.

If there is a Facebook account mapped to the selected Twitter account, the story will be
published to your Facebook wall or Page wall as per the settings.

If you want to publish your message on a later date or time, uncheck the Now checkbox and
select your desired date and time.
Sending Direct Message

You can send DM to all your friends with single click on a button. Go to File->New Direct
Message or click on the New DM button on the toolbar.

Select your account from the drop down, all your friends screen name will be loaded on the
right-hand list. Select your friends to whom DM needs to be sent or click on the select all
button. Enter your message and click on Preview to preview the message. Select a Delay from
the drop-down which is the delay between two DM requests. Once you are done with the
settings, click on Send.

Tip: As per the Twitter rules, you can send only 250 DMs in a day. On reaching the limit,
TweetTwain pauses sending DMs and continues when the DM window is available.
Mentions

All mentions to your account will be listed in this tab. TweetTwain updates the content real
time, so you can monitor your account and give reply or re-tweet the tweet.

Go to Mentions tab and select your account. All mentions till date will be loaded in the
bottom table.

Select a row and right-click for options.

Reply: Click on reply to reply to the user who mentioned your screen name in their tweet.
Follow: Click on Follow to follow the user
Re-Tweet: Click on Re-Tweet to re-tweet the tweet
Edit and Re-Tweet: You can edit the message and re-tweet with this option.

Send DM: Send direct message to the author of the tweet


Clear: Clear the bottom pane
View Profile: View the profile page of the author in a browser
Re-Tweets

Here you can view all the re-tweeted tweets and the number of re-tweets.

Right-click a re-tweet to reply, follow, send DM or view profile.


Monitoring Brands
You can monitor your brand or keywords on Twitter and export tweets to a CSV file.
TweetTwain monitors tweets for your keywords and display it for you real time. Go to
Monitor Brands tab and select your account. Enter your keyword and click on Add to List.

You can delete your keywords by clicking on the Delete link on the keywords table.

TweetTwain monitors keywords every X minutes as per your brand monitor setting and loads
the tweets on the bottom pane.

If the export option is enabled, tweets will be exported to a tab separated file under the data
folder (%user_home%/TweetTwain/Keywords/tweettwain.txt).
Auto-Reply
You can send replies automatically to those who refer your keyword in their tweet. While
adding keyword, check ‘Send Auto-Reply’ and click on Set button to set auto-replies. Type
your message and click on Add. You must add at least 3 replies and TweetTwain randomly
picks a reply and sends reply based on your automation setting (Low/Medium/High).

You can view the auto-reply log on the bottom pane as shown in the screenshot below.
Auto Follow
You can set TweetTwain to automatically follow users who mention specific keywords in their
tweets. The follow frequency can be controlled by the Automation settings.

You can see the follow request log on the bottom pane.
Auto Re-Tweet

You can automatically re-tweet tweets containing specific keywords.

TweetTwain monitors Twitter timeline for your keywords and re-tweets tweets matching your
keyword. You can control the re-tweet frequency via Automation settings.
Feed Monitoring
You can configure TweetTwain to automatically publish your new blog posts to Twitter and
Facebook. Go to Feeds tab and fill the details as shown in the below screenshot:

Make sure the feed URL is in RSS format. Click on Test to test your blog URL. All your feed
URLs will be listed in the bottom pane.

TweetTwain at regular interval checks for new blog posts and posts new blog entries to
Twitter and Facebook.
Application Integration
You can integrate your business applications with Twitter and Facebook via TweetTwain.
Update your organizational messages to a database table and let TweetTwain read those
messages and publish to your social media accounts.

Go to Integration tab and add your database details as shown in the below screenshot.

The above sample assumes a database table MESSAGES with two columns MESSAGE (String)
and PUBLISHED (Boolean). Every 60 minutes, TweetTwain reads one un-published message
from the MESSAGES table and publishes to your associated account. After publishing the
message, TweetTwain sets the publish flag to true.
Keyword Statistics
TweetTwain is capable of generating visual graphics from the data collected from Twitter. Go
to Trend Analysis tab and select your keyword. Click on Generate Chart to generate a graph
with your data for easier analysis.

You can export the graph as PNG image by right-clicking on the graph and selecting ‘Save as...’
option.

Note: You must keep TweetTwain running to collect data from Twitter.
Account Statistics

You can analyze your followers and friends count by looking at the account statistics graph.
Search & Follow

One of the unique features of TweetTwain where you can automate your follow/un-
follow/add to lists actions.

Go to Settings->Options->Search tab and configure your search.

You can add new search tabs by clicking the menu bar icon shown in the below screenshot.

Warning: Mass follow/un-follow actions may force Twitter to suspend your account. Use this
feature with ultimate care.
Bio Search and Follow

You can search user’s biography and send follow requests. Enter your brand name or keyword
and click on Search & Follow. TweetTwain loads X number of users matching your search
criteria and sends follow request at regular interval as set in the search settings.

You can see the following details of a user in the search result:

Screen Name – Twitter screen name of the user


Following? – Following status (Not Following – Requesting – Following/Pending)
Followers – Number of followers
Following – Number of people the user is following
Biography – User’s Twitter biography

Note: If your request to follow is pending or you have been blocked from following a user, the
status will be shown as ‘Pending’.
Keyword Search and Follow

You can search for a specific keyword within tweets and follow only those users. This tool is
useful when you want to follow users in a specific niche.

Tip: You can restrict the search for a location by typing the city or state name in the Location
textbox and selecting the area from the drop-down.
Account Based Follow

You can follow all followers of a user or all users following a specific user. Enter the username
and select ‘Followers’ or ‘Following’ and click on Follow.

Tip: You can follow all your followers by entering your screen name in the username textbox
and selecting ‘Followers’.
Search and Add to List

Another unique feature where you can search users, follow them and add them directly to a
Twitter list. Also you can create a new list by selecting ‘Create New List’ from the drop-down.
Enter the list name in the pop-up and click on OK.

The newly created list will be loaded in the lists drop-down, select the list and click on ‘Search
& Follow’
Un-follow Non-followers

You can un-follow all your non-followers using TweetTwain. Select your account form the
drop-down, select ‘Non-followers’ option and click on ‘UnFollow’. TweetTwain loads X
number of non-followers and sends un-follow request.

Un-follow All

You can un-follow all your friends by selecting ‘All’ option. You can clean your account with
this option.
Twitter Campaigns

Go to Campaign tab and click on 'New Campaign' button. Enter the campaign details and click
on Save.

Account: Your Twitter account

Name: A short name for your campaign

Start Date: Campaign start date

End Date: Campaign end date

Hashtag/Code: If you want to measure your performance based on a hashtag or promotion


code, enter it here. Make sure you are entering a unique hashtag for
example #ANDROIDMARKET2012

Link: The long URL to your campaign page. TweetTwain uses Bit.ly URL
shortening service to shorten your URL and you can track the link clicks.

Message: A short message which will be published to Twitter. Make sure you include
your hashtag in the message. The short URL will be included automatically.

Tweet Now: Publish the message to Twitter


Preview the message and once you are ready, click on the ‘Save’ button.

TweetTwain will update the statistics at regular intervals. You can view the status of your
campaign at the Campaign tab.

Double-click a campaign to view the campaign details. If you have not yet published your
tweet, click on the ‘Publish’ button. You can export tweets or user details, print a report or
even select a winner randomly.
Twitter Reach: Direct viewers of your tweet

How many Re-Tweeted: Re-Tweet count

How many Hashtag tweets? Number of tweets with the campaign Hashtag within the start
and end date.

How many clicked the link? Link click count

New followers: New follower count within the date range

Virality: Followers of people who re-tweeted or used the hashtag in


their tweet.

Most Influential Viewers:


Details of users who have most number of followers, who re-tweeted or mentioned your
hashtag in their tweet.

Reports and Statistics:


1. Export Hashtag Tweets: Click to export all tweets mentioning your hashtag in to a Comma
Separated File (CSV) which falls within the campaign start date and end-date.

2. Export/Print: Click to generate a campaign report in PDF format. You can print the
campaign details from this PDF.
3. Export Re-Tweeted Users List: Click to export details of all users who re-tweeted your
tweet.
4. Link Statistics: Click to view the statistics of your link.

You can view the link click count, referrers, locations and many more.

5. Select a Random Winner: At the end of the campaign you can select a random winner by
clicking this button. Last generated winner will be saved in the database and can be
viewed later.

6. Refresh: Click this button if you want to manually refresh the campaign data. Note that it
may take a long time to complete this process.
Importing Tweets to TweetTwain

You can import unlimited number of tweets in to TweetTwain and can be scheduled to publish
at your specified date and time.

Prepare a comma separated file (CSV) in the below format:

Tweet Screen Name Date and Time(YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM)

Sample file given below:

Save this file as TweetImportSample.csv.

Go to Tools->Import Tweets, select the above file and click on Ok. Go to the Tweet Queue tab,
all the imported tweets will be listed in the queue.

Tip: You can delete multiple tweets from the queue by selecting multiple rows and pressing
Delete key. You can clear the tweet queue by selecting Tools->Clear Tweet Queue
Exporting Tweets

Go to Tools-Export Tweet Queue to export all pending tweets to a Comma Separated file
(CSV). A sample exported sheet shown below:

You can export the archived tweets by selecting Tools->Export Tweet Archive.
Analyzing the Links

All your links published via TweetTwain will be tracked and can be monitored to measure your
performance. Go to Link Analysis tab and select your account.

Clicks: Total number of clicks via your link


Global Clicks: Total number of clicks via global links

Double-click to view the link report including:

1. Link click location


2. Referral websites
3. Time based click report
4. Twitter conversations
Tip: URLs shortened from outside TweetTwain will not be available for ‘Link Analysis’
Auto-Tweets: Auto-Generate and Publish Tweets

TweetTwain is capable of publishing tweets at regular intervals based on your keyword. Go to


Auto Tweet tab and select your account. Enter your keyword and click on Add.

You can change the frequency of the tweets by changing the automation settings under
Settings->Options->Automation tab.

Warning: Make sure you set proper keyword and monitor the tweets being posted by
TweetTwain for couple of days. Keywords not related to your account niche may result in
loosing hard earned followers.
Shorten Multiple URLs

Go to Tools->Shorten Url or click on the toolbar button to open Shorten URL window. Enter
your long URLs to be shortened in the text box separated by new line and click on ‘Shorten
Url’. The shortened URLs can be copied from the ‘Short Urls’ text box.
Settings

Various settings and their details can be found under this section.

1. Tweet Settings
Various settings for Tweet publishing can be found here.

a. Tweet Publish Delay: Duration between tweets published from TweetTwain. This setting
will override all scheduled tweet timings. You can select 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 and is
measured in minutes.
b. Brand Monitor Delay: TweetTwain monitors tweets for brands or keywords at regular
intervals. You can select 2, 5, 10, 30, 60, 120, 360 or 720 and is measured in minutes.
Change this setting to a higher value to save API calls.
c. Enable New Tweet Alert: Enable or disable new tweet popup on the system tray. Every X
minutes, TweetTwain checks for new tweets.
d. Enable Direct Message Alert: Enable or disable DM notifications. Every X minutes,
TweetTwain checks for new messages.
e. Alert Delay: The duration for which the tray pop-up will be displayed.

You can change this setting from the system tray too.
2. Proxy Settings
You can add/delete proxies here.

Check Use Proxy to use proxy server to connect to Internet. You can add proxies separated by
new line to use Random Proxy.

3. Black List & White List


You can add or remove users to black or white lists. Users in blacklist will be excluded from
follow and those in white list will not be un-followed during un-follow.
Tip: You can automatically add users to blacklist who has not followed you back by checking
the Add to blacklist checkbox while un-following.

4. Theme Settings
There are 13 Themes available in TweetTwain. Select your desired theme and click on Apply.
Some themes may require restart.
5. API Settings
You can use your own API key for Twitter, Facebook and/or Bit.ly. Leave these fields empty if
you want to use default API keys with TweetTwain.

Please do not enter invalid API keys as TweetTwain may become unusable on doing so.

6. Security
You can protect your accounts with a username and password and limit the access to only
authorized users.

Select a username and password and click on apply. On restart, TweetTwain will ask for your
credentials before launch.
Authentication Pop-up:

You can disable authentication by simply removing your username and password.

7. Follow Settings
Various settings for Follow/Un-Follow can be found under this tab.
a. Search Limit: Number of users to be searched for. You can set this to 10, 25, 50, 100, 200
or 500.
b. Follow Request Delay: Time gap between follow requests.
c. Follow only if following count greater than: Followed only if the target user follows at
least X number of people.
d. Follow only if profile image exists: Filter based on profile image.

8. Export Settings
TweetTwain is capable of exporting tweets real time.
Export Tweet History: All archived tweets will be saved in a comma separated file.

Export Keyword Tweets mentioning your keywords or brands are monitored real
Mentions: time and exported to a comma separated file.

Export Re-Tweets: All re-tweets will be exported to a comma separated file.

Export Mentions: All screen name mentions will be exported to a comma separated
file.

Open Data Folder: Click to open the data folder.

Clear Data Folder: Click to delete all export files.

Warning: Keep monitoring your data folder as the storage size may go up depends on your
Twitter usage.

9. Automation Settings
This setting controls your automated Tweets, Re-Tweets and follow-request frequency.
Low: Default setting, ideal for beginners. Sends less number of tweets, auto-replies and follow
requests.

Medium: Ideal setting for regular use. Sends moderate number of tweets, auto-replies and
follow requests.

High: Sends large number of automated tweets, auto-replies and follow requests.

Warning: Make sure you monitor your account for couple of days after changing this setting.
Sending too many tweets, auto-replies and follow requests may result in your account being
suspended by Twitter.

10. System Tray Settings


Right-click on the bird icon to view the tray menu.
About: Shows the system and application information

Show: Shows the TweetTwain window if hidden

Hide: Hides the TweetTwain window

Show New Tweets: New tweets will be displayed as per the settings

Show Direct Messages: Shows new direct messages

Always on top: Keeps TweetTwain window on top of all other windows

Exit: Closes TweetTwain


Un-installing TweetTwain

Step 1:
Windows: Go to Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->Select TweetTwain from the
program list and click on Remove.
Linux: Go to Preferences->Java Control Panel-> View files. Select TweetTwain from the list and
click on Delete.
Mac: Click Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Java > Java Plug-in Settings -> View files.
Select TweetTwain from the list and click on Delete.
Step 2:
Delete TweetTwain folder from your user home directory.
