1. Pilot Overview

This handbook describes the satellite communication (SATCOM) and

the operation of the Honeywell/Racal Multi-Channel System (MCS)
6000 satellite communications equipment as installed on the
A320/A330/A340 aircraft.

The pilot guide contains the information required to operate the MCS
SATCOM. The guide contains details sufficient to answer the majority
of questions generated through system use.

The following SATCOM options are covered:

D Two channels are reserved for flight deck use

D The aircraft system automatically logs on to the proper ground earth
station (GES) station
D Manual handover is not necessary.

The crew can preempt passenger calls to place higher priority calls or
they can queue flight deck calls for future placement when a channel
is available. In all cases, two voice channel selections are displayed on
the SATCOM MAIN MENU page.

This guide builds on the basic knowledge of the A320/A330/A340

Multi-Function Control Display Unit (MCDU) operation.

The reader should know that every effort has been made to ensure the
accuracy of published information. Questions about current system
operation and configurations should be directed to Honeywell
A320/A330/A340 Product Support or Honeywell Pilots Group.

This guide is intended as a guide and does not supersede any Airbus,
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), or airline--approved
procedures. It is written for system familiarization only.

2. General Overview

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The SATCOM system provides both data and voice communications.
(See Figure 2--1 for flight deck configuration.) SATCOM
communications are possible when the following three parts are
connected together with normal telephone equipment:
D Aircraft earth station (AES) -- The aircraft--based SATCOM system
D Ground earth station (GES) -- The ground--based SATCOM system
D Space segment.

Connection of AES to GES via the satellite is controlled by the AES.

This process is called logon. Logon is done automatically using airline
performances, or manually through inputs to the MCDU.

One or two SATCOM systems can be installed in an aircraft. Each

SATCOM system has multiple channels for communications. (For the
number of SATCOM channels, refer to the airline operations manual.)
One channel is reserved for communications control. The control
channel also has aircraft communication addressing and reporting
system (ACARS) datalink communications. Two channels are available
for flight deck voice use. The remaining channels are for passenger
voice use.

SATCOM recognizes the four levels of voice communications priority

described below:
D Priority 1/EMERGENCY -- This level is reserved for emergency
and distress calls only. Alarms are initiated at the GESs and airline
operations are notified of an aircraft in distress when an
EMERGENCY call is received.
D Priority 2/SAFETY -- This level is normally used for regulatory and
flight safety calls.
D Priority 3/NON SAFETY -- This level is normally used for
operational, non-safety, or flight calls.
D Priority 4/PUBLIC -- This level is reserved for cabin passenger
voice calls.

The priority of a call determines the accessibility to satellite and GES

resources. Higher priority calls can preempt existing calls on the
satellite/GES system.

C28-- 5111-- 007 General Overview

2-1
Use or disclosure of the information on this page is subject to the restrictions on the title page of this document.
System Guide

NON SAFETY communications include cabin provisioning, seat

assignments, passenger travel arrangements, and baggage/parcel
tracing.

PUBLIC communications are reserved for passenger calls and can

include:
D Voice calls
D Facsimile transmissions
D Personal computer modem transmissions.

SATCOM equipment can automatically log onto an appropriate GES.

As the aircraft flies out of coverage for a satellite or satellite spot beam,
the system automatically hands over control to the next proper satellite
or spot beam.

SATCOM data service is momentarily interrupted during a handover.

Data service automatically resumes following a successful handover.
An automatic handover is not initiated when voice calls or data
transmissions are in progress.

Voice capability is determined by the elevation of the four geostationary

satellites above the horizon with relation to the aircraft location. With the
satellite servicing the aircraft near the horizon or with the aircraft in a
bank, fewer voice channels can be available. Channel availability is
displayed on the MCDU channel status display page.

For proper voice operation, SATCOM requires information from a fully

functional inertial reference system (IRS).

SATCOM maintenance information is accessible through the

communications management computer (CMC).

FLIGHT DECK CONFIGURATION

The MCS SATCOM consists of a satellite transceiver system, three
MCDUs (installed in the left, right, and aft panels of the forward
electronic control panel), and three audio selector panels. All three
MCDUs can be used for SATCOM independently and simultaneously.
Figure 2--1 shows the flight deck.

SYSTEM INTERFACES
Figure 2--3 shows the airborne equipment required for a single
SATCOM system to perform ground communication using the satellite
network. The satellite data unit (SDU) controls all communication with
the ground. The SDU controls the SATCOM system which can be
adapted for use through the owner requirements tables (ORT). An
additional three channels, which are dedicated to cabin/passenger use,
are provided by the radio frequency unit (RFU) (if installed). The
high-power amplifier (HPA) amplifies the air-to-ground signals that are
transmitted by the high-gain antenna (HGA), intermediate gain antenna
(IGA) or low-gain antenna (LGA) equipment. The ground-to-air signals
are input to the SDU as received by the HGA/IGA/LGA system(s).

Airborne Satellite Equipment

Figure 2--3

The IRS provides the system SDU with aircraft attitude and position
information that is required to steer the HGA and/or LGA. Log--on using
an HGA or IGA for satellite voice cannot be done without precise IRS
position information. The MCS SATCOM system can provide data link
satellite communication using LGA equipment that does not require
IRS information.

MCDUs are used for pilot control and to initiate air-to-ground calls.

The data loader interface is used to upload the ORT and to download
system logged information.

AUDIO CONTROL PANEL

A maximum of two satellite voice (SAT) channels are provided to the
flight deck. These channels operate independently the same way as
other cockpit radios. The channels are controlled using the audio
control panel (ACP) shown in Figure 2--4.

Audio Control Panel

Figure 2--4

The MIC SELECTION and push-to-talk (PTT) functions for SAT-1 and
SAT-2 operate the same way as other cockpit radio equipment (i.e.,
VHF, HF, INT, and PA). They are controlled on the ACPs.

NOTE: SAT 1 and SAT 2 on the ACP are equivalent to SAT 1 and
SAT 2 on the MCDU SATCOM MCDU pages.

MCDU OPERATION
The SATCOM uses the MCDU for information management and setup
of the system. Pushing the SAT line select key gains access to the
SATCOM system, shown in Figure 2--5.

MCDU MENU Page

Figure 2--5

Many of the SATCOM pages are unique, in that the title lines are
dynamic. For example, these lines frequently change while on the same
page. Close attention must be paid to both the title line and data line if
the system is to be properly monitored during operation. Unlike FMS
operations, both the active and inactive components can be displayed
on the same page. They are identified by an enabling asterisk (*) next
to the line select key.

System Guide

The scratchpad is used to enter data and display system-generated

messages:

D Data Entry -- The pilot pushes the alphanumeric keys to enter them
on the scratchpad. After a valid entry is made, the pilot pushes the
appropriate line select key adjacent to the field in which data is to be
entered. The system checks the scratchpad data for format and
acceptability (out-of-range, entry not allowed into the field, etc.). If
the data is correct, the system enters that data into the selected field
on the display. If the data is incorrect, the system rejects the entry
and issues a scratchpad message.

D Scratchpad Messages -- If, after trying to enter data as described

above, the system determines that the entry does not conform to
format or acceptability requirements, the system issues a
scratchpad message that prompts the pilot for the correct data. The
user can clear a scratchpad message by pushing the CLR (clear)
key or by overwriting data into the scratchpad to replace the
message.

Message Text Meaning

NOT ALLOWED This message is issued whenever the

following occur:
D An LS (line select) key is pushed
adjacent to a blank field.
D An attempt is made to revert an
unprotected priority field back to a
non--existent default value.
D An attempt is made to initiate a
data loader action when no asterisk
is displayed adjacent to the action
prompt.
CHECK NETWORK ID This message is issued whenever a
phone number entry meets the format
criteria before the optional network ID
is entered, but it contains an invalid
network ID. If an optional network ID
is appended to a phone number entry,
it must be preceded by a single slash
“/”, followed by one of two numeric
characters.

3. Flight Operations
The satellite communications equipment provides air-ground
communication by both cockpit voice and data transmissions, that is,
ACARS/data link. Before performing ground communication, the
satellite equipment must have completed the LOG-ON process. The
IRS must be aligned before the SATCOM system can log on.

System LOG-ON is essential for satellite communication and it is done

one of two ways:

D Automatically, requiring no pilot action (this is the normal condition)

based on ORT (owner requirements table) parameter selection.

D Manually. (Refer to Table 3--1.)

When aircraft power is applied, the SATCOM equipment establishes a

communication link with a ground-earth station (GES) as specified by
the airline in the ORT SATCOM data base. A manual log-on to a
pilot--selected GES can be performed from the SATCOM LOG--ON
STATUS page on the MCDU.

NOTE: The MCS SATCOM has been demonstrated for use as a

supplement to other required high frequency (HF) and VHF
communications systems with no restrictions. Use for air
traffic control (ATC) communications requires operational
approval.

A maximum of two independent channels are available in the cockpit.

Either can be used independently.

GROUND-TO-AIR CALLS
The select calling (SELCAL) chime annunciates incoming calls to the
aircrew (except during flight phase inhibition), and on the audio control
panel (ACP) by flashing of the CALL legend on the SAT1 (SAT2)
transmission pushbutton. To complete the headset call, select the
SATCOM channel SAT1 (SAT2) on the ACP by pushing the SAT1
(SAT2) button on the ACP (steady GREEN).

NOTE: Pushing the RESET pushbutton switch on the ACP can stop
the chime and switch-off the CALL legend.

If the priority of the call is higher than 4, SATCOM ALERT is displayed

on the electronic centralized aircraft monitoring (ECAM) in green, and
GROUND TO AIR CALL is displayed on the SATCOM main menu
under the called channel (SAT1 or SAT2) with the associated priority.

HOLD FUNCTION
When a SATCOM call is established (after air-to-ground call or
ground-to-air call setup) on SAT1 (SAT2), selecting another radio
communication (HF or VHF) switches the audio management unit
(AMU) audio transmission from the satellite data unit (SDU) to another
radio (HF or VHF) switch.
To return to the SATCOM call, reselect the SATCOM channel or
deselect the same radio HF or VHF on the ACP. The GREEN lines of
the selected radio (HF or VHF) button switch off and the GREEN lines
of SAT1 (SAT2) transmission button turns on steadily. The AMU
enables audio transmission to the SDU.

AIR-TO-GROUND CALLS
Calls are initiated from the cockpit by manually inserting or selecting a
telephone number to be dialed from the directories on the SATCOM
MCDU display pages.
If the SATCOM call is already established, or the SATCOM call is
established but on hold, the call can be terminated two ways:
D The SAT light goes off when the ground party hangs up
D The pilot ends the call by pushing the SAT 1--2 button when the
SATCOM call is connected.

EQUIPMENT ANNUNCIATION
The MCS SATCOM equipment that is available to perform cockpit voice
communication with the ground is displayed on the SAT MCDU pages.

SATELLITE DATA LINK/ACARS COMMUNICATIONS

Position report data may be provided to the ACARS or CMU equipment
which passes the information intended for the satellite link transmission
to the SATCOM equipment. The SATCOM system transmits this
information to the logged-on GES via satellite. The GES sends this
information to the associated ground user.
NOTE: The MCS SATCOM demonstrates the integrity criteria
required for non-essential communications equipment.
The availability of the MCS SATCOM equipment to perform the ACARS
or communications management unit (CMU) data communication with
the ground is annunciated via the ACARS MCDU display page.
The ACARS MCDU display page annunciates the availability of the
MCS SATCOM equipment to perform the ACARS or CMU data
communication with the ground.

CALL PRIORITY
The SATCOM equipment provides four priority levels of air--to--ground
and ground--to--air telephone communications:

Priority 1/ PRI 1 is reserved for emergency and distress calls only.

WARNING

DO NOT USE PRIORITY 1/“EMERGENCY” FOR CALLS EXCEPT

FOR EMERGENCY AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATIONS. THIS
PRIORITY ACTIVATES ALARMS IN GROUND EARTH STATIONS
ALL AROUND THE WORLD. DO NOT USE PRIORITY 1/
“EMERGENCY” EXCEPT IN BONA FIDE EMERGENCIES!

Priority 2 / PRI 2 is reserved for regulatory and flight safety calls.

Priority 3 / PRI 3 is reserved for non-flight safety calls.

Priority 4 / PRI 4 is reserved for passenger correspondence calls.

D Priority 1 and 2 calls -- These calls are only placed to and received
from air traffic services (ATS), which includes ATC and related flight
services. Aeronautical operational control (AOC) like ATC is a safety
service defined in International Civil Aviation Organization: Agency
of the UN (ICAO) Annex 6, Part I, which exercises authority over the
initiation, continuation, diversion, or termination of a flight in the
interest of the safety of aircraft, and the regularity/efficiency of a
flight. Priority 2 is used only for the following AOC functions:

— To directly accommodate operational flight requirements

— To interface with the airline’s departments, that is, flight

operations, engineering, maintenance, and/or scheduling in
exercising or coordinating accurate and timely information
exchange between the aircraft and the ground user(s).

D Priority 3 calls -- These calls are for aeronautical administrative

communications (AAC). This level is for non-safety-related service
that includes cabin provisioning and inventory, seat assignments,
passenger travel arrangements, and baggage and parcel tracing.
AAC calls are placed/received at priority 3.

D Priority 4 calls -- These calls are for aeronautical passenger

communications (APC). This priority must be used for
non-safety-related service that includes voice, facsimile, and PC
modem telephone service for crew and passengers to connect
with ground-based networks worldwide.

To select a GES, push the left line select key adjacent to the desired
GES. When the key is pushed, <SEL>, is displayed to the right of the
selected GES name and ID number. There can only be one GES
selected at a time. For example, if a GES is already selected and the
pilot wants to select a different one, the previously selected GES is
deselected and the <SEL> display moves to the right of the most
recently selected GES. If no GES has been manually selected, <SEL>
is not displayed to the right of any GES on the list.
