1: urbanizing
by increasing building density is environmentally friendly as buildings cast shadows on
each other, giving a natural cooling effect. Shaded areas are needed for the comfort to
play and relax. It also leaves larger open spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone, and
create a better shared sfere that opens for the future inclusion in the urban fabric.
2: human scale
working with variation, distance and scale, I wish to learn from traditional, informal
building, and create a comfortable and unique environment.
3: social sustainability
“the house with several faces” gives each housing unit access to different levels, and
adaptability. Future generations might requre new uses or expand the house by turn-
ing courtyards, terraces or semi-public space into new rooms.
How can we translate the qualities of such informal architecture into a modern struc-
ture that meets the needs of the inhabitants, has urban potential, yet keeps the scale
of a local community?
Position
Close to the Old City and Jerusalem City Centre, this area is still discon-
nected and has a distinctly rural character.

Walls in East Jerusalem : local culture, a desire for privacy ?Adoption from the separation politics of the authorities?
“Some say that the city itself is culture, and that the history of culture is the history of the city. The absence of a city and
urban life has had a crucial impact on the unique way in which the Arab siciety in the State of Israel has evolved. The im-
pact of that vacuum is especiallly conspicous in the field of culture”
-Jamal Zahalka
“Having no control over the public sfere, they find themselves in a state of self-defense in relation to it.. One may say
that Palestinian society is devoid of public space”
- Senan Abdelqader
“ Their only affinity lies in their aspirations to imitate architectural patterns that have evoved elsewhere, usually in sites
populated by Jewish Israelis, which greatly differ from them in culture, history and aspirations. (...) Such imitation is a
hybrid and distortion of the neighbouring architectural patterns, in addition to its being alienated and even hostile to the
cultural setting. (...) Thus, initiatives, whether private or collective, to uproot the various architectural instances of pol-
lution and ugliness are of great significance. (..) Such solutions venture to pick specific modes and elements from his-
tory for themselves, without feeling burdened, and at the same time do not hesitate to adopt influences and concepts
from foreign cultures. In this context it is important to emphasize that such elements and ideas are capable of renewing
our affinities with our land in a more aesthetic manner, affinities that were distorted and even cut off in many cases.”

The puzzle
Exploring “boulder”-shapes on their own terms, in
systems according to their angles. The resulting
plan allows a good exploitation of land, informal
passage between buildings and gives each house a
ccess to open space and a unique facade, view and
light.
