different firing angles.

THEORY :

The limited range of firing angle control by resistance firing circuit can be
overcome by RC firing circuit. Here by varying resistance capacitor triggering circuit
firing angle can be controlled from 00 to 1800 . In the negative cycle capacitor C
charges through D2 with lower plate positive to the peak supply voltage Vm at
ωt = 900 . After ωt = −900 , Vs decreases from −Vm at ωt = −900 to zero at ωt = 00 .
During this period capacitor voltage Vc may fall from −Vm at ωt = −900 to some
lower value at ωt = 00 . During positive half cycle when capacitor charges to gate
trigger voltage Vgt , SCR is fired. D1 is used to prevent breakdown of cathode to gate
junction through D2 during negative half cycle.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. CRO should not be used in dual trace mode .

2. Power circuit and input are checked whether isolated or not.
3. Load Rheostat is connected in the circuit with its fixed terminals.
4. A resistor is connected in series with control potentiometer, so that gate current
doesn’t cross the maximum possible I g ( max ) .
PROCEDURE:

1. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram

2. Connect the load Rheostat between the load points.
3. Switch ON the supply and vary the firing angle by varying the control
potentiometer. Observe and draw the wave forms across load and SCR .

RESULT:

Hence verified the gate firing scheme of R-C triggering circuit for triggering
the SCR and the waveforms across load and SCR for different firing angles are
observed.

CONCLUSION:

From the experiment, it is concluded that by using R-C triggering circuit. We

can control firing angle from 00 − 1800 ( x > φ ) . Also, R-C triggering circuit gives
power dissipation in the gate circuit as it gives prolonged pulses.
