It is with great sadness that I reiterate the words and sentiments of our President, H. E. Phan
Wannamethee’s address to the people of Japan. As a Thai person and with The WFB
Headquarters based in Bangkok, I, the staff and supporters of The WFB Headquarters along
with all Thai people are all too aware of the consequences of a massive tsunami. We had
firsthand experience when an earthquake took place in the Indian Ocean on the 26th December
2004 unleashing a catastrophic tsunami that claimed the lives of so many. The sufferings and
sorrows still linger in our minds and our empathy with the people of Japan cannot adequately be
expressed in words as they struggle to come to terms with and deal with the immediate
aftermath, followed with the logistic complexities of re-establishing order and necessary foods,
water, medical assistance and resumption of services and utilities.
The task that the Japanese nation faces is truly daunting and the President, H.E. Phan
Wannamethee and I urge all Regional Centres to draw on their humanitarian reserves to assist
in whatever way they are able.
When Thailand and other affected countries were in need following the 2004 tsunami, the world
responded with compassion and practical assistance, it is again time to express our compassion
and unity to support our fellow beings to mitigate the effects of this tragedy as swiftly and
effectively as possible. We cannot underestimate the task in hand to rebuild not only the
material but the lives of those directly and indirectly affected and I appeal to your generosity of
heart and means.
May we unite in our prayers and condolences for the Japanese people in these
unprecedentedly distressing times and circumstances.
