Find CD ROM Missing

I work as a computer repair tech and i’ve noticed a recurring problem with cd/dvd drives in
Windows XP and Vista disappearing from the my computer menu. Now rather than to restore the
OS, wasting time hunting down drivers, or replace the drive you can try to fix the problem by
editing the registry keys.

1. In XP just go to start run and type in “regedit” and in Vista just type “regedit” in the search
box.

2. From there maximize the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES

3. SYSTEM

4. CurrentControlSet

5. Control

6. Class

7. {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now look in the right panel and find “Upperfilter” and “Lowerfilter”, click on each “filter” and
hit the delete key. You will be prompted after each filter to confirm, just hit yes and then restart
the computer after both filters have been successfully removed.

Issue

My Matshita-DVD-RAM-UJ-850S cannot be recognized completely. For first it has an

error code of 39. I wanted to install some applications on my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-
FJ3S/W). How can I help this situation? Are there ways through which I can get the update
drivers for this drive to help activate it?
Or what can solve my problem here? Please I do need to be helped out as soon as possible.

Solution
When CD/DVD Rom drive is missing from My Computer or Computer, deleting upper and lower
filters should solve the problem.
The problem can occur due to installing codecs or other media players which mess with the
filters;

It is recommended that you backup your registry before performing these steps.
They appear complicated but really it’s just a case of navigating through folder after folder,
being careful that you select the correct one each time as some can look very similar in name
(the numbers on the last entry have others that are almost the same ... just make sure it’s the
right one)

If need be you can Google for "how to back up registry in Xp/Vista" which ever applies.

 Click the Start Button/Windows Orb (as its known in Vista).

 For Vista type "regedit" in the search box right at the bottom just above the start orb, the
top result will be regedit.exe, this is the one you want ..... or click Run and type "regedit"
no quotation marks obviously.

NOTE: User Account Control may ask for permission to continue in Vista.. Select Continue

This will then load the Registry Editor.

 In Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-
11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Remember, you're looking for 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

There are other entries with only 1, 2 digit differences - so get the right one!

 In the right hand of the window, locate and click UpperFilters.

 Right click and select Delete. If you're not confident using the right click, then select the
Edit menu, then click Delete.
 In the right hand of the window, locate and click LowerFilters.
 Right click and select Delete. Again, If you're not confident using the right click, then
select the Edit menu, then click Delete.
 Exit Registry Editor.
 Now reboot/restart your computer.

Check and you should see your DVD/CD Rom again.
