by local artists. Inside, it’s “com-
fortably organic,” from the simple
white upholstered settee and
chairs, to a multitude of hand-
blown glassware, and colorful cot-
ton, woven rugs by Dash & Albert

The tongue-and-groove walls
and ceiling, painted white, serve
as a neutral backdrop for fanciful
quilts, oil paintings, table acces-
sories, and small upholstered fur-
niture that may be custom ordered.
“Simple is better and there is
nothing like natural cotton, linen
and silk fabrics. Designing a room
is like painting a picture. I like to
personalize each room to its use
and its user. There are many beau-
tiful styles to choose from. There is

Mary Hobbs
A family heirloom is born
when Chagrin Falls artist Mary
Hobbs creates a piece.
Memories of the historic
Modroo farm, a landmark in the
Chagrin Valley, were captured for
the family in a painting that will be
treasured by generations to come.
Her technique of using col-
ored pencils, creating layer upon
layer of translucent color, achieves
a realistic vision and captures the
“soul” of the subject.
Mrs. Hobbs’ versatility is
amazing, from her life-like por-
traits of people and animals, to the
warm glow she sees in a family’s
home.
Her process begins with tak-
ing a variety of photographs of the
subject and discussing the focus of
the painting with the client. She
presents five or more preliminary
sketches so the client can review
them and choose, she said.
A member of the Colored
Pencil Society of America, her aim
always is to make sure each client
is extremely satisfied when they
receive their painting, she said.
To insure longevity of the
work, Mrs. Hobbs said, paintings,
which start at $500, are created on
archival and acid-free fine quality
board.
