KILL THE TIGER
xii
THE LONELIEST MAN
The loneliest man on earth may have sat there for some time,
contemplating that his last act might go some way to expiating his
guilt, or he may have acted quickly to kill the fear once and for
all. But at some time that day Walter Chapman slipped the pill
into his mouth and within seconds he was dead. In a macabre
tribute to the heroes, it was the same cyanide pill he had been
given twenty years earlier at the outset of Operation Rimau on the
opposite side of the globe in Australia.
Chapman’s last thoughts may have been that, culpable though
he was, he was far from being the only guilty one. Rufus Mackenzie,
for one, should have borne much of the ignominy but he had been
promoted to Vice Admiral and was therefore an untouchable
member of the navy hierarchy. And Mackenzie wasn’t the only one.
The chain of betrayal of the Rimau heroes ran right to the top of
the Allied high command.
