2 2011 Religious Education Congress

WELCOME

General Info
March 2011

I are delighted to welcome you to our annual Religious Education Congress. This won-
derful annual gathering affords us the opportunity to renew our discipleship with Jesus
Christ, our membership in the Body of Christ, His Church, and our commitment to the
ministry of evangelization and catechesis.
This year’s theme, Hold Firm...Trust!, is inspired by the Scriptures for the Second
Sunday of our Lenten journey. We are drawn into the extraordinary love of God who
accompanies us on our faith journeys, steadies us in times of challenge, and leads us
to the fullness of the Paschal Mystery. Trusting in God’s presence and power, we walk
with confidence through seasons of dark and of light.
The Keynote and addresses, the many workshops, and the varied Liturgical Celebra-
tions offered throughout the weekend are a rich source of renewal for us all. We are
gratified and encouraged that so many of you take advantage of the extraordinary
opportunities to deepen your lives in Jesus Christ, to reaffirm your love for the Church,
and to commit yourselves to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus for the whole world.
Your leadership and faithful participation are key to the ongoing growth and well-being
of our parish communities.
Please be assured of my gratitude and encouragement as you continue to be involved in
this essential ministry of catechesis in our Church.
Asking God’s blessings upon you, your families and parish communities, and with
every best wish, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ,

His Excellency
Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los Angeles

4 2011 Religious Education Congress

WELCOME

General Info
March 2011

It is a great joy for me to welcome you once again to our uplifting and inspiring Religious
Education Congress. This outstanding weekend offers many opportunities for re-energizing
our lives and enriching our ministries.
The Congress theme – “Hold Firm…Trust!” – echoes the words of the prophet Jeremiah who
likens the one who trusts, to a tree by the waterside that has no fear even in a year of drought.
Nourished at its roots by the rich soil, it grows and flourishes in all seasons. Heartened by this
promise we move forward, buoyed up with energy for the journey.
As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious
Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling
20 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2010
Congress Saturday night liturgies together with online contributions added $44,702 to this
fund. We thank for your on-going generosity.
Our spirits are sure to be lifted with the inspiring liturgical celebrations, entertainment and
multicultural expressions provided. In the midst of the many activities there is also opportunity
to “step back” and rest in the silence of Sacred Space, walk the labyrinth or participate in the
Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Thank you for your exceptional leadership and your unwavering commitment to keep on shar-
ing the Good News of our rich heritage.
I look forward to welcoming you at this spirit-filled gathering.
Sincerely,

Sister Edith Prendergast, RSC

Hna. Edith Prendergast, RSC

Esta es çena de amor llena (This Is the Supper of Love) Tomás Pascual (1595-1635)

Translation:
This is a supper full of love, this is a supper of love.
When we are in this supper there is love,
and it is that He has ordained as a great glory.
The supper of love incites a joining with the Beloved Lover,
of love with Sacred Love, and of Love that is His essence.
S Since such a supper was created it has been maintained for all.
U This alone unites us because it includes His essence.

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the on-going
training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for the ongoing edu-
cation and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers to pursue
graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given
the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.
Those who registered online could contribute to this Fund, as well as those who made an additional contribution through
mail-in registrations. As of Febraury 14, 788 people responded with contributions totaling $10,775. We sincerely ap-
preciate and acknowledge their contributions. The Fund is currently enabling 20 students to pursue a master’s degree in
Religious Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
