Health – Updated March 2011

Lack of access to and inadequate health services combined with sub-standard sanitation systems place
Haiti at the bottom in terms of health in the western hemisphere. With approximately 40 doctors per 100,000
Haitians, approximately twenty-five percent of births are attended by a skilled professional. The situation
only deteriorated on January 12 and was further affected by the cholera epidemic which has claimed
thousands of lives. The Government of Haiti (GoH) has estimated requiring over $ 600 million (USD) for the
recovery and reconstruction of the health sector over a three year period.
