BIOGRAPHY FOR SASABONA SAMUEL MANGANYE

Sasabona Samuel Manganye was born in 1982 March 03 in Tshamahansi, Mokopane, Limpopo Province. Currently reside in Johannesburg where he is playing his Community and Political Activism. He and his betrothed, Thoko Ntone are blessed with a Son, Xikhongelo Katleho born in 2008. His father, Hlengani Manganye passed away in 1985 and he grew-up under a care of his mother, Ramasela Manganye. He started schooling not at a preschool but Makgubuketja Primary School in 1988. He furthered his studies at Ben Hlongwane Secondary School where his leadership role started to blossom. He became involved in politics at an early age where he was advancing Congress of South African Students (COSAS) agenda through his election to the Presidency of the Learners Representative Council (LRC) from 1996 to the year 2000. He was also a member of the School Governing Body informed by his Presidency role. He also participated on activities like Drama (as a main character), soccer and volley ball. In 1999, he was approached by South African Communist Party Branch Task Team in Tshamahansi to be part of the collective which facilitated the launch of the SACP branch in Tshamahansi village where he was the youngest at the age of 17 in the branch. He was then being introduced to Marxist and Leninist Communist ideology which he still believes in. He joined the ANC in the year 2000, May 1 and he is still an active member. He completed his Matric in 2000 after he repeated as he was not satisfied with his initial performance in 1999 although passed. In 2001, he did not manage to further his studies due to lack of finances but participated in community development programs. He was the Organizer of the Youth Leaders Against Crime in 2001. He also volunteered to facilitate Accounting and Mathematics at Tshamahansi ABET School. He became part of the Secretariat of the Tshamahansi Community Committee which was a mouthpiece of the community on mining expropriating issues deployed because of his role as part of the Secretariat at Headman (Chief) Matjeke in his village. He was instrumental in assisting the Headman in addressing number of community challenges even though being at a younger age by then. He also worked for STATS SA as an Enumerator for Census 2001. He served as a Ward Committee member for ward 20 (Tshamahansi Village). He was also the Acting District Secretary for Mokopane District Community Correctional Service Forum established by the Department of Correctional Services which

led to him serving as an additional member for Limpopo Provincial Community Correctional Service Forum. In 2002, he managed to obtain a study bursary from Study Trust later from Limpopo Department of Education where he registered with the Vaal University of Technology (The then Vaal Triangle Technikon) main campus where he completed National Diploma and B-Tech in Information Technology. Currently busy with his M-Tech in IT. In his first year, he was elected as the first Deputy Branch Secretary for the ANC Youth League when it was launched. He was also the Vice-General Secretary of the Career Information Organisation (CIO) and later been elected as the Primarius (Chairperson) of the then Goldfields House deployed strategically by SASCO. He also served as the Deputy Chairperson of the Central Housing Committee of the Vaal University of Technology. This role made him instrumental in ensuring transformation in the University residences by ensuring the availability of appliances such as stoves, televisions, refrigerators and many other supporting resources which made the environment conducive for students to study. In 2003, He was elected as the Chairperson of the Career Information Organisation and also the Chairperson of the South African Students Congress (SASCO). He was later on the year elected as the First SRC President from SASCO (since it was launched in 1999) and Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) for 2003/2004. His election made him to serve as the first President for the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) when it was renamed the Vaal University of Technology from Vaal Triangle Technikon. His Presidency enabled him to serve as a member of Students Affairs Committee of Council, Building Committee of Council, Senate and the University Council. He also participated in number of students formations including Students Parliament. He delivered a watershed Inauguration Speech which influenced the transformation of the Vaal University of Technology. In his term of office, he has ensured that theres no single student denied access because of neither financial nor academic reasons. He further used his SRC honorarium to register other students from historically disempowered families. In 2005, he served once again as the Chairperson of SASCO where he and the collective invited the then Deputy President of the ANC, the YCLSA National Secretary and ANC Youth League President to show Comrade Jacob Zuma support on his legal battles which VUT SASCO branch believed there were politically motivated. This campaign was also used as the launch for the Progressive Youth Alliance SRC manifesto and a campaign for local government elections which led to his re-election for the second time as the SRC President of VUT for 2005/2006. As the SRC President, he participated to all committees as above mentioned in addition to Finance Committee of Council. In both his term of office, fighting academic and financial exclusions were in the main of his leadership mandated by the Progressive Youth Alliance (SASCO, YCLSA, ANCYL and SUCA). He was also

elected as the Education and Transformational Officer of SASCO Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee for 2005/2006. At around March 2005, he was awarded with a Scholarship for an exchange program between VUT and Loerrach University of Corporative Education situated in Germany, where he completed his IT National Diploma project from November 2005 to February 2006. He also participated in the three days Customer Relation Management (CRM) Workshop in Lenzerheide, Switzerland organized by Tourism Department. He also managed to visit Paris, in France. He was employed as an Intern for three weeks with Vitra, an international furniture company on its IT department to get Germany industrial exposure. In 2006 April, he graduated for National Diploma in IT where he also officially received a Merit Certificate from Loerrach University of Corporative Education. In the same year, he registered for B-Tech in IT which he completed in 2007 and graduated in 2008 March. He registered for a Certificate in Business Management with the Graduate Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT) which he completed in 2008 January and Graduated in February. He is currently registered for Master Degree in IT with VUT. In 2007, he was employed by Nedbank Group through Bankseta Graduates program where he moved from Vaal to Johannesburg. He worked for Nedbank until October when he resigned after he was employed by Afrisoft Africa in October 2007 to 2008 June. He has joined Siemens as an Assistant to Quality Manager from 2008 July until 2010 June and later in August joined Nedbank Group where is currently making things happen. He was elected as the National Chairperson for the ZCC Students Fellowship (ZCCSF) for 2007/2008. In 2008, he became a Branch Executive Committee member for the ANC Havana64 branch in the inner-city as the Deputy Secretary and later acting Branch Secretary. He is being elected as the Branch Chairperson of the ANC Youth League Havana64 branch. He was part of the collective which ensured the Launch of the YCLSA and SACP branch in Berea which has been named after the second President of the ANC, Sefako Mapogo Makgatho. He is currently the Convener of the ANC New Ward 123 branch and he is the ANC Youth League Joburg Regional Executive Committee (REC) Head of Political Education for 2011-2012. He has been elected as the first President of the Vaal University of Technology Alumni Association (launched in October 2009). He is also serving to the Board of Trustees for VUT Foundation: Educational Trust. He is also serving as the Secretary for Hilbrow Community Policing Forum 2009-2011. He has also been elected as the Vaal University of Technology Convocation President which will enable him to become a member of the Vaal University Council representing Convocation for a period of Four years (2010-2014). He also participates in other

sub-committees of council such as Student Affairs Committee as Chairperson and Finance Committee. Sasabona believes that South Africa is alive with possibilities and we may be born poor but it remains our choice to die poor.
