Parenting:

P
arenting seems to be in the news
everywhere you look lately. First
came the hubbub about Amy Chua’s
controversial book on Chinese-style hyper-
parenting, “The Battle Hymn of the Tiger
Mother,” bringing with it endless debates
about whether her
method was demeaning
to her children — along
with questions as to what
exactly it was she was
advocating.
Just as that debate
began to simmer down, I
opened a newspaper to
see an article in which a
writer castigated a breed of hyper-parents not
mentioned in the Tiger mom debates: The
“helicopter parents” who seem to live vicari-
ously through their children, who hang on to
them and aid and over-schedule them in a
quest to get them as perfectly prepared as
possible, striving for the best schools from an
absurdly young age.
It’s no surprise that this topic draws so
much attention and captivates readers for so
long once it hits the headlines. Parenting is
an immensely important and, on many levels,
immensely personal subject for, well, every-
body who is, was or plans to be a parent.
Because of the nature of the task, there is a
constant search for advice and opinions on
the topic, and it’s only natural for some to
take umbrage when somebody suggests that
you might be doing it wrong.
Many of the articles I have read seem to
