eco system. The SEAL group stayed nearby
at Borneo divers on the island of Mabul and
travelled to Sipadan on each of the days they
were granted permits.

Tour leader Rob Timmers, a very seasoned trip

leader and experienced master scuba instruc-
tor found the diving world class. “The green
and hawksbill turtles came within centimetres
of the diver’s underwater camera lens, making
for some spectacular photography. The super
visibility and deep oceanic drop offs combined
with the prolific fish life made it a memorable 5
2 experience for all.”

A highlight of the trip was diving Turtle Cave.

This limestone cave has a labyrinth of tunnels
and chambers where the skeletal remains of
turtles that have become lost and drowned can
be found. It is a dive only for the more expe-
rienced diver; however the less experienced
diver can see much from the cave entrance
where large schools of fusiliers and big eye
trevally tend to gather.

The SEAL group comprised a mixture of ex-

perienced divers and newly qualified divers.
Andrew Keay from Sale completed his diving 6
course with SEAL Diving Services whilst on
the trip. Andrew said “It was absolutely mag-
nificent, I was awestruck by the sheer amount 7
3 of fish, the large schools of Jacks and Barra-
cuda were a definite highlight for me”.

Eleven year old Kelsea Timmers from Traral-

gon loved the big schools of fish and barra-
cuda and the spectacular wall dives covered
in soft and hard corals. Kelsea did 16 dives
on the trip keeping up with the adults. “There
were turtles on every dive and they were ex-
tremely friendly and inquisitive.” “I can’t wait to
go back” she said.

One thing that I’m always asked when
selling a pair of boots or socks is will this
help me “prevent blisters”! Well, there
is a few more ingredients involved than
just your socks and boots when your

Yes, boots are one cause, but you

On November 14th 2010, the Traralgon
Bowls Club was again awarded Clubs
Victorias Bowls Club of the Year. This
is now the third time in 5 years that the
Club has won this prestigious award.
The win now elevates the Traralgon
Bowls Club into Club Victorias Hall of
Fame.

Manager Nathan Davis, who along
with representatives of the Board of
Management was present on the night,
said “it was a fantastic result for the
Club and a great reward for the Club’s
members and staff who work tirelessly
to ensure Traralgon Bowls Club
remains one of the premier bowling

New Years Eve Entertainment –

Once again we will be hosting live
entertainment with the well-known act
On Thursday the 25th of November, the
Lakeside Club ‘Bowls Division’ conducted
a charity Crackerjack casual bowling night
where over $4500.00 was raised to support
the Central Gippsland Health Service.
This was the 6th time this excellent event has
been held to support the hospital. Over 100
players participated in the bowls as well as
enjoying a BBQ and refreshments, it’s a great
way to raise money for such a worthy cause.
Organisers Bill Jennings and Mary Jackson
are already looking forward to next year’s
event.
Crackerjack is played on Tuesday nights
throughout the day-light savings period, with
up to 200 people participating, making it the
largest single night’s casual bowls competition
in the state.
The Lakeside Club ‘Bowls Division’ will be
holding a large ‘Family Fun Day’ on Sunday

activities and a family BBQ.

Welcome to December. I am not
sure where the rest of the year has
disappeared to. I am sure it was only
yesterday that Rob and I decided to
open Fisherman’s Hut, all of a sudden
we have been open for just over 5
months.
Christmas will soon be upon us and to
bring in the festive season we have a
few specials going on in the store. All
our Spotters sunnies are being reduced
by 20% for December. We also have a
range of combos on special too. You
may be surprised at what you will find
inside, including DVDs, books, clothing
and many other great stocking fillers.
Our Christmas tree is up and towering
high in the café. We encourage you to
bring in a decoration and add it to the
tree. We will also be collecting gifts
and making sure they are donated to
Mission Australia to help bring a smile
to a child’s face this Christmas. Feel
free to drop a gift off and leave it under
the tree.
We like to support our local community
and have provided gift vouchers and
tackle as prizes for the local fishing club
competitions. Another way we support
the locals is by offering a Fisherman’s
Hut loyalty card. The card will give
local anglers 10% discount on all tackle
purchases. If you don’t have one yet
drop in for a chat and we will do you up
a card.
The fishing has certainly been heating
up since the last edition. Almost
everyone hitting the salt water has been
catching a nice bag of flatties. Gummy
are still being caught and if you get to
the Snapper at the right time, bagging
out on them is not too hard either (the
hard part is finding them!). Lots of
people have been catching bronzies,
seven gill and hammerhead sharks off
the beaches and out of boats. Squid
is also on the menu, with the weed
beds at Port Albert and Port Welshpool
producing some nice sized calamari.
We have introduced a gluten free
range to our café menu. We now have
gluten free cakes, cooked fresh in our
kitchen, and we can also do almost
anything on our menu gluten free. Just
ask and we can cater for anyone with
food intolerances or special dietary
requirements.
We have also started taking booking
for Christmas functions. We can cater
direct from our menu, or to your specific
requirements. Don’t forget we are happy
to cater for private functions at any time
throughout the year.

Gippsland Flight Centre News...
Ben McGuinness and his homebuilt
Waiex aircraft.
A new addition to the West Sale aircraft
scene is Ben’s Waiex recreational aircraft,
registered # 19-7411. (Pictured Below)
Ben is an apprentice Licensed Aircraft
Maintenance Engineer (LAME) at
Southern Aircraft Services (formerly
known as Yungur Aviation.). He started
building his aircraft at age 19 in November
2007, and finished it at age 22 in October
2010.
The aircraft is a low wing, all metal, vee
tailed tailwheel aircraft powered by an
Australian Jabiru 3300 120 HP engine. It
has a cruise speed of 140 kts (260 kph) at
2850 rpm. The stall speed in the landing
configuration is 35 kts – quite impressive
for an aircraft with such a high cruise
speed!
Construction took about 2,000 man hours
and, on inspection, is magnificent.
Well done Ben.
CHC Helicopters
This company will have an operation
based at West Sale for the next 18
months. It will be using two Super Puma
AS332L1 helicopters, namely LHG and
LOJ to crew change, etc to the Derek on
the barge DB30 currently conducting pipe
laying operations offshore in the Bass
Strait oil field.
Each Super Puma has a gross weight
of 8600 kg, cruises at 127 kts (235 kph),
carries two tonnes of fuel and burns 600
litres per hour. They are twin engine
aircraft – the engines being Makila 1A1’s
of 2,000 HP each.
The CHC crew comprises two Base

Managers (who alternate), four pilots and
six ground crew including engineers and
operations staff.
Each helicopter carries a flight crew of
two plus 18 passengers on crew changes

daily from the West Sale terminal. The

hive of activity with security, weigh in,
allocation of seats, etc prior to departure.
Visitors to the terminal will notice that it is
screened in order to facilitate both CHC
operations and other terminal users’
needs.
If members of the public would like to
see the operation in action a visit to the
Terminal Area at West Sale at about 11:00
am ESST would be well worth while.
Please stay clear of operations, and
remain behind the fenced off tarmac
area, and bring the kids!

Workshop was held recently at the
TAFE lecture theatre on West Sale
Airfield. The objective of the workshop
was to promote a safer, user friendly
aviation environment in the Gippsland
region, bringing all the sectors of
aviation together to conduct aviating
activities that enhance enjoyment and
camaraderie in a healthy well organized
aviation sector.

clinching them a place in the squad.

Johanna have set the pace for the boys.
“It’s a challenge and an inspiration to

the girls had worked hard and deserved

This morning on ABC, we were queried about no
dig gardening. Morris offered to put his recipe
on their website. I quickly jumped in and asked
him to write an article for us. He’s too nice to
refuse, so once again, let me introduce you to
Morris Holmes, gardener extraordinare....

A no dig garden is very siimple. The diagram

above shows the method of loading and getting the structure up and running.

The frame can be timber, plastic or even corrugated iron. Commence the fill with a layer of
cardboard on the surface, being sure to place the frame over the cardboard , covering any
weeds or grass on the site. Place a layer of newspaper about 4cm deep over the cardboard,
then commence layering with lucerne hay, light dressings of blood and bone or similar fertilizer,
newspaper or shredded papers, oaten or wheaten straw, or similar, a light layer of compost or
garden soil, even potting mix.

Really, the layers can be of almost any material that will readily compost down. Repeat the
layers as many times as it takes to fill the frame in your garden, but be sure to add some blood
and bone or organic fertilizer between layers. The last layer needs to be either composted
materials, reasonable quality potting mix, or garden loam for planting you first seedlings. I do
recommend that once planted, you should liquid feed with a seaweed fertilizer at fortnightly
intervals.

Remember, this is a no dig garden and it is unnecessary, in fact,
