Howdy Folks!
Wow! Here it is high Spring and aren’t there some lovely plants about?! If you can
squeeze it in, take time to smell the roses and go have a look at some of your local
open gardens. It’s so inspiring. Contact your local nursery, visitor’s information
centre, or garden club for sites in your area.
Have you planted your sprint veges? We’re doing ours this weekend, which I find
exciting. There is such a huge selection now, but here are a few we have chosen
for lip “smackingness”.
Capsicums - Cherry: This is the delightful “papa sweet” that you find in the deli filled
with feta - Yum!
Couryard: This is a compact sweet varitey with richly colored fruit ripening to a deep
red.
Tomatoes: First Prize: This is an old variey and such a stalwart plant. Nothing much
seems to worry her.....great to eat or cook.
Black Russian: A heirloom variety. You can’t go past this one’s flavour - not one
that I readily share.
Low Acid” (roma type) and Big Yellow (Mellow Yellow to some) - these too are
heirloom, full of flavor and no acid withich my “gouty” friends truly appreciate. House and land packages in Gippsland
Gourmet Truss: We all know this delight. She’s the expensive one in the
$198,000
supermarket.
Lettuce: So many to choose from, but how about mini iceburg? Its a small hearting
variey that ripens quickly. For a leafy choice, how about Gourmet lettuce, with all from
her wonderful colors?
Beans: Sinatra is a very tasty dwarf stringless french bean and guess what? Wonder
of Venice, a great climbing butter bean, is back again after a few years absence. Multiple areas and estates
Silverbeet - of course, there is the ever faithful.
Fordhook Giant: but I rather love the old fashioned rainbow variety. There are so
many wonderful colors!
Corn: Sno-gold bicolor is so sweet! You can’t go past it. Try it raw off the plant for
an extra taste treat.
Beetroot - Chioggia is another old variety with a mild flavour and a host of colors.
Let me see, what else? Maybe a little Golden Nugget Pumpkin, a few button
squashes, a lebanese cucumber, eggplant supreme and don’t forget basil around
the tomatoes. I can’t wait to build my first salad - it’ll be so brightly colored I’ll need
my sunglasses.
Now for a quick word about snail bait. Metaldehyde is the active constituent in many
brands, and is affective against snails, slugs and millipedes. It is also effective on
dogs, cats, and birds, and is highly flammable. Methiocarb is another, and because
it is used commercially as a bird repellent, it is deemed safer. Yeah right! We use
Multicrop’s Mulitguard. It is made from and iron in our bodies called EDTA. Although
it kills snails and slugs, it won’t kill your pet or remain in the soil. Just to be sure, I
